In fine company as well, - Smokey, Burt, Isaac, Dionne - sharing thoughts on what constitutes a great love song. Shame they cheated a bit by implying that he perfomed Tracks at Frejus. Ferry stock is clearly strong these days; ten, perhaps five, years ago the z-list vox-pop musings of sundry "alternative" comedians and daytime presenters who wallpapered this otherwise interesting programme would have made sniffy comments about the Maestro - the tux, the arriviste, the shameless pursuit of glamour etcetera. The transformation to Great English Instituton is almost complete. Will the bubble burst as punters balk at the #32.50 ticket prices for the Reunion Tour, squinting at the stage in the brutalist arenas that the Management consider appropriate ? Sad. Whilst last night his visage resembled ageing parchment I was amazed at how youthful he looked on Maria's video of outtakes from a Moscow TV interview. I haven't much to add to Chris's excellent review of this curio except to rave about how elegent and charming he appears. Not once did the Maestro affect irritation at the technical problems, au contraire, he laughed and was the epitome of languid pateience. The turquiose cufflink with the violet shirt was another triumph. Well the windscreen wipers keep a beat repeatin' in this wet city. Tomorrow I shall report a tout l'Avalonia how the denizens of the Press receive our reunited chums. I shall be in the American Bar of the Savoy at 12.30 for a sharpener before taking my seat for the Roxy re-launch. Posing as a hack for a couple of hours is a frightening thought, but these zig-zag shadows promise much. Having said that they will all be going to the show. I think there is a bit of a gamble being taken here, people who will see the show advertised in the paper initially may well think of going along for the nostalgia, but once they see the price they may well think twice. As most occasional listeners will probably go along as part of a couple the possible cost of #65 could definetly be a put off. it's not as if there will be a new album to stir up interest and any attempt to put out another "Hits" package will probable fall short due to the fact that it was this area of the market who bought "Slave to Love".If there is a problem brought about with the cost of tickets they could easily find themselvs playing to less than full venues. Hall 4 of the SECC holds something between 5000 - 8000 people, no doubt the other venues will all fall into this area. Traditionally the vie at these places is poor as the bulk of the fans are so far away from the stage and the sound usually leaves a lot to be desired. Lets just hope that if they are intending to play these "brutalist arenas" that something will be done to make sure that the die hards who supported Ferry so well on the ATGB tour will get a crack at the best seats. Sadly though I doubt if anything will be done in this area. I for one will go to the Glasgow show, but I will have to think hard before commiting funds to traveling to any of the other shows on the tour. Cheers, Tom. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 08:32:10 -0500 (EST) From: Colleen Matan Subject: Re: [AVALON] ticket prices > From: kevin routley > >ticket prices? > 32.50 for glasgow . what a rip off for the fans. > but there again bryans got to replace a horse box and quad bike? The fact is that tours cost money. In fact, tours often lose money, and if ticket prices for other artists are lower, that's usually because the cost of the tour will be offset by merchandise sales and album sales as the tour goes on. But guess what? There is no album for this tour. And because it's a one-off tour, the money has got to be made up front (I'm sure it's being paid up front too, unless the band is making a serious error). I'm sure the costs for this tour are astounding--fees for the performers, rehearsal time, hotels, airplanes (do you think this is going to be a van-and-hostel tour? I don't.), insurance, entourages, etc. Colleen ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 08:39:05 -0500 (EST) From: Colleen Matan Subject: Re: [AVALON] Nature of BF's oeuvre (was: Trash/Seventeen) On Fri, 9 Feb 2001, Victor Hastings wrote: > Grrowl. Ah, insistent. In this context, one of my favorite words. Oh, sorry, got lost there for a moment. Yes, "I'm In The Mood For Love" is definitely a throw back to those days and definitely one of the 2 highlights on that album. How it ended up on _As Time Goes By_ is still a mystery to me. > How about the sigh of regret as well? Regret over having loved and > lost, over having sought out pleasure and found pain instead. But I also think that the sighs of regret have taken over Ferry's world and have diminished him and it. A dark side is always useful in an artist (and attractive to many of us) but his slipping completely into it can be just as emasculating (here's your second chance, Simon) as others turning him into some airy tuxeo'd confection, like the groom on a wedding cake. A tiger without teeth isn't nearly as interesting as one with teeth, now is he? Hello, Last week I questioned the "First Kiss" boot at being at the wrong speed. Well, I goofed up and incorrectly posted the wrong title. Ingore "First Kiss", I don't even own it. What I should have said is this: While doing a comparison between the 2 original bootleg album (not CD's) "Silk Circles" and "Why Do You Think I'm A Funky Chick?" (Stockholm '76) I noticed they are both at different speeds. "Why Do You Think I'm A Funky Chick?" appears to be slower then "Silk Circles". To my ears "Silk Circles" sounds like it's at the correct speed and sounds better. Bryan's vocals seem to be flat on "Why Do You Think I'm A Funky Chick?". Does anyone have any info on which one is at the correct speed? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!
