I last saw him in early 1999 at the RFH. The highlight of that show was a haunting version of "The Ballad of Cable Hogue", which was wreathed in a Morricone-esque spaghetti soundscape - chilling! "This is a song about two men who fell in love in jail..." "The Ballad of Cable Hogue" was a Slo Mo Sam Peckinpaw film I believe. This was my very first Avalon get together and I was wary of meeting such devil-may-care correspondents from the list while I mostly lurk and learn. It was a lovely soiree and fun was had by all (hi Jane, whom I was pleased to see fleetingly - my one overriding characteristic is that I will always be late: bad weather and last minute change of baby sitter meant I missed the Sunday *other* list get together completely). This was the best introduction to some of my favourite literary figures... ;-) By way of self-introduction, I have been mad for Roxy (and their constituent parts) ever since Virginia Plain. But like many school boys discovering a passion, I discovered the need to prioritise and, sorry to say, chose Bowie over Roxy. So they had released the first two albums AND These Foolish Things before I owned owt but the singles. Worse still, I used to get friends at school who were going to Roxy shows to buy me a programme because I couldn't run to a full ticket. Similarly, I went on my own to see Bowie at Earls Ct in '73 because no one at school could afford the #1.25 ticket price. This paucity of pocket money situation meant I never saw Roxy until the Manifesto tour...and in the face of what's coming later this year, do I regret *that* decision? However, I did choose Roxy Music over Jobriath and Dana Gillespie! As we now arrange Mad Affairs and stately home weekends, I wonder if we recall the days of the Three and Nine? Back to the Future, does anyone know whether the Roxy dates will be selling from the date of the Savoy bash? Will there be a free for all or is there any scheme being hatched up for Avalonians to buy the block at the front at each show? I think if Bryan Ferry stages the shows as we know he can, they will be tremendous. But it does seem to me he brought so much style and ilan to the rock scene when it had none; now when the media in which he is a part has so much more to offer, he foregoes extras on DVDs, omits the meticulous album cover production values and looks dangerously close to hiring the sessioneer in shorts (or somesuch) on drums again... Yes, Ivor, I think it was in the lengthy MOJO 1995 article that Sinfield said something like "Fripp's threatened he's still got the tape somewhere." It's unlikely that he has thrown it away or used it as paperweight, considering Fripp's exact way of dealing with past recordings. But Bryan would probably cringe and crumble if Fripp released it and they might have agreed on not releasing it. Same thing with the early Roxy demos - I'd love to hear them, but I fear Bryan's over-critical with his past work.... Christian P.S.: It's nice to read that "Which Way To Turn" receives the praise it deserves.
