But I try not to base my *entire* collection around one set of chords S;^^ > I can picture you now Ive, kaftan covered in button badges... No no no no no no no, parkas and snorkel jackets were the thing, at least round our way. Especially those green parkas with the fake fur hood trim that used to stink of glue when it got wet and those funny little plastic ends to the pull cords that split and fell off within the first week and the metal popper studs that closed your pockets against the elements (except when they got rusty or the little wire bit inside got bent so it wouldn't close any more). By the way ... *why* was it considered cool to have a parka with a little German flag stitched into one of the seams ?? What *was* that all about ?? Most importantly though, you had to have a cheap, 'army surplus' style canvas backpack to keep your schoolbooks in, which was meant to be attached to your person by two threaded straps with brass coloured metal ends but which fashion dictated could only ever be worn slung casually over *one* shoulder. Crucially, it had to have YOUR FAVOURITE BAND'S LOGO meticulously copied on the front flap in as many colours of Magic Marker as you could lay your hands on. This wasn't rock'n'roll, this was genocide - and fans of Yes, ELP and Led Zeppelin, with their distinctive designs, won the war hands down every time ! A mere Roxy fan like me couldn't hope to compete - I had to make do with a clear bold ROXY MUSIC in shadow writing of my own design (I didn't see the RM plus crown logo until much later and anyway it wasn't on the album covers, where it counted !). Never mind extra features on yer new-fangled DVDs - where was the fancy logo when you really needed one, eh ?? Regards, Ivor. n.p. Ash '1977' - now if THAT doesn't make you feel old, nothing will !! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2001 09:36:27 EST From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Press conference I'm in. Jocelyne wrote: >The 1971 Roxy demo of course. Wonder who's got that gathering dust on a >studio shelf? John Walters, I imagine, since Peel & Walters received a copy of (what I assume was) the tape that went to the record companies. Peel presumably burned his after seeing Ferry on the Bete Noire tour. I didn't read the Peel review of the show in the Observer but it was harsh enough for Bryan to refer to it in an interview 7 years later while promoting Taxi. (There were a few references to Peel at that point: he claimed in an interview to have heard Blackfoot's version of Taxi on the Peel show while doing 100 mph, trying to find pen and paper to jot down the song's details; he also included a snip of Peel muttering "cheers" in typically morose fashion - as a Radio 1 news broadcaster finished a bulletin, I think - on Rescue Me.) To hear him tell the story, Walters had more to do with the Roxy thing initially than Peel did, Bryan recognising Walters immediately (from their time in Newcastle Uni with Hamilton) when he visited the Radio 1 office to deliver the tape. (Or was it the other way around? Did Walter recognise Ferry? I forget.) Won Kar Wei's beautifully shot film, In the Mood for Love, received a few mentions here, not all favourable. I didn't know that he chose the English title while listening to a Ferry track, as someone here suggested - does this quote appear somewhere? (The Chinese title means something like "The Age of Blossom".) I'd just like to mention that this film is to Won Kar Wei's earlier releases what Avalon is to the first three Roxy albums. Imagine Roxy going from Stranded straight to Avalon. Shockingly placid at first, lovingly recorded and likely to deeply divide the opinions of fans of the earlier work, to put it mildly. Adding to the film's aura, in Won Kar Wei's native Hong Kong, the two leading characters (Tony Cheung and Maggie Leung) are both played by people who are very public style icons themselves. There's another layer to the film for natives of Hong Kong, as they watch the actors play with and against their own public images. It's a very Avalon-like film and if you like emotions to be easy, up-front, and obvious, it's not for you. Love War; I remember someone, (probably Mr Turner, Avalon's official librarian at the time, and a very dedicated one, too, supplying us with every article mentioning Ferry from every newspaper he could get hold of) first posting news of Love War. It was part of an article in which Bryan was claiming that the new album would have a more aggressive, assertive sound. I believe it was in a the piece taken from the Times or something. The funny thing is I can't remember any mention of Dave Stewart at the time, though numerous other names were named. And it was quite some time ago, probably around '95. Was this track rewritten and re-recorded with Dave Stewart or have I just blanked out all mentions of Stewart's name? The Crimson tape: I expected the Avalon digest following that mentioning the tape to be pretty much written by Arnie Schulberg alone but if there was a single message, I missed it. Wow, Arnie, are you really that busy or have you already got your copy of that tape? Roxy Reunion: add Cale on bass and you're in for a corker. Would the cleaned-up, 21st century Cale swallow his pride and play bass for Roxy? Would Ferry swallow his pride and ask? Unlike Eno (one of his many ex-sparring partners) Cale loves live work and revels in it. He has complete command of an audience and is - perhaps now more than ever - an astonishingly good live player. Hey, Roxy could do Waiting for the Man and segue into Valentine - or Mother of Pearl... melancholy shimmering. And then Sunset. And Ferry would have to be asked not to smile, or he'd spoil it. :-\ (I've been listening almost non-stop to Cale's version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah - glorious.) And finally, the sound of Carleen Anderson's voice on Which Way to Turn: an exceptionally wonderful thing, if played loudly enough (the song and the sound of the voice, both). I've forgotten the other 50 things I was going to write about. Consider yourselves lucky. Well, I don't suppose there's any way that "Hired Hand" Jobson, the near recluse, would turn up on this tour. No doubt still working on his "Legacy" project! For those of us who bemoan the slow work habits of the Maestro, just compare to EJ and you'll see that Bryan is a speed demon in comparison. Gosh, do I sound bitter?
