The Sunday Times piece in full January 28 2001 BRITAIN It's worth it: Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music in their heyday Photograph: Rex Roxy Music lead rock stars of Seventies back into spotlight Maurice Chittenden DUST off those platforms. Roxy Music have reformed after 18 years of silence to lead a flare-up of 1970s bands heading back to the stage. Three of the group's original members, including the singer Bryan Ferry, now 55, have signed a multi-million-pound deal to tour Britain, Europe, America, Australia and Japan. The band, which had hits in the 1970s with such singles as Virginia Plain and Love is the Drug, will perform about 50 concerts, starting in June. Money appears to be the drug today. Ferry will be joined on stage by Phil Manzanera, the band's guitarist, who turns 50 this week, and Andy Mackay, 54, its saxophonist. They last toured together in 1983. Brian Eno, 52, a founder member who left the band in 1973, is not taking part. A spokesman for the band said: "We don't know the dates yet; they only came to an agreement a couple of days ago." The band was formed in 1970 after Ferry, a former art student, moved to London from northeast England. Roxy Music had a meteoric rise. Its experimental "art rock" caught the eye and ear of the disc jockey John Peel when he saw their first gig, supporting Genesis at the Hobbit's Garden in Wimbledon. A Radio 1 session followed and Virginia Plain, the debut single, reached number four in the charts. Their only number one hit was with John Lennon's Jealous Guy, recorded as a tribute to the former Beatle after his murder. Roxy Music are not the only faded stars to return. The veteran hard rockers Uriah Heep, who recorded their debut album Very 'Eavy . . . Very 'Umble 31 years ago, and Scotland's Nazareth are to tour Britain together in March before they visit Malaysia, Germany and the Czech Republic. The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) releases its first studio album for 15 years in April, with George Harrison and Ringo Starr playing on some songs. Wishbone Ash, who celebrated their 30th anniversary last year and are playing in Bonn tonight, are threatening to take their fans on a four-day cruise in the Caribbean this summer, during which there will be no escape from the heavy riffs. Will the rockers' return work? Kicki Gustafsson, who runs a Roxy fan website called Avalon, has doubts. She said: "A reunion after 18 years can of course be great fun, a nostalgia fest for the diehard fans who'll be moved to tears. But there's always the risk that the whole affair will be uncomfortably pathetic." Peel said: "Musically, these reunions are virtually of no interest at all. I wouldn't be interested in seeing any of them again unless Roxy Music were playing in our village hall." ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 10:38:30 0000 From: "diane whateley" Subject: [AVALON] RE:AVALON Bry and Frostrup in Sat Telegraph I meant to post this yesterday, for the benefit of UK Avalonians. It's good to know that Roxy could still change your mind - and indeed, isn't it very often that music can catch us completely unawares? I hope it will be the case for you and others rather sceptical concerning the Roxy tour. It is interesting to have several diverging opinions around - many being completely enchanted, albeit a bit bewildered at the thought to see them again/for the 1st time respectively (amongst which I'd count myself) and some doubting the value of the reunion. I appreciate it that the Avalonians do not move towards a complete uniformity of opinion - this could make for interesting discussions after the tour will have happened - and it's what all this is fed from. However, just one more point: I think the Spice Girls comparison does not really hold water: right from the start this was a group that was casted by others, a product for the marketplace, while Roxy casted and designed themselves for the most part, and they still represent some of the most innovative pop music ever. They are musicians with strong musical and personal identities that form(ed) constituents of what is there in the music. It was not Baby Bryan, Ginger Andy, Posh Phil, Sporty Eno, Scary Paul, was it???? Questioning why, trying to make sense of things, attempting to understand, rationalize - all this is skepticism - it may be interpreted as negative reaction. The glass is half full. I don't know the URL though, cos I saw it in the actual newspaper. To anyone else who bought the paper just to look for that, have a look at the Worcester Women article in the Times Magazine. One of the featured women, Geraldine Lawrence (don't know the page, sorry, think my mum's nicked the magazine), is my great aunt! :-D Bye Laura ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 11:44:14 -0800 From: "David Firmin" Subject: [AVALON] In the Mood for Love I just saw the commercial for a film titled "In the Mood for Love."
