I have a book somewhere which details the stories behind all the UK no.1 singles (up to about 1990 or something). Apparantly Roxy were rehearsing for this show when the news broke that Lennon had been murdered. Ferry had always liked Jealous Guy so they quickly worked out an arrangement so they could pay tribute in concert. On the UK tour in early 81 it became a permanent fixture of the live set, although the arrangement did not yet resemble the single version. Does anyone know when the single was recorded? My guess would be over Christmas 1980 as the Roxy schedule was pretty busy and the single came out Feb '81. That means the 20th anniversary of Roxy's only UK no.1 single is upon us (that will be my most profound thought for the day). And if you're coming to AMA you might just see that first performance of Jealous Guy. SimonG >>> "Ferdinand Biesheuvel" 01/26 8:26 am >>> I thought the first performance was in Dortmund, germany at a rock pop concert together with dire strat, talkingheads and ???. It was broadcasted on the 3th of januari (my birthday, easy to remember) 1981. hardly a month after the killing of Lennon. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 09:42:56 +0000 From: "Simon Galloway" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Does anyone know....? For me, what absolute perfect timing. I jumped about like an idiot. I'm sure you expected no less. In a terribly anoraky way, I watched it go in at 18, climb to 6, then 3, then... wow ! March 10th 1981. 1.00pm.. The charts were on a Tuesday, back then. (yes I know 'the book' says March 14th - but that's the week ending date - not the 'actual' date it made it...). And what's more, it knocked 'Shaddap Yo Face' off the No.1 spot. Something else to be thankful for. And yes, that very first performance of the song, from Dortmund, will indeed be shown at 'A Mad Affair'. Haven't forgiven Bowie for the re-release of Space Oddity keeping LITD from making the top spot, though. Sorry, Simon ! There will be an official announcement made, via this service, in mid February, regarding the first batch of concerts. We aim to have this information in place for you before the Roxy Music Avalon-list party 'A Mad Affair' in London, on February 17th. All confirmed dates/venues for the Roxy Music Tour will be released via this service first, in association with the Bryan Ferry Information Service and Jim Lawn. Tour dates are being booked as we speak, and as soon as confirmations are through, they will be posted here. The first batch of concerts will take place in the UK, in June 2001, and we will bring you exact details here within the next few days. USA dates are currently being planned for late summer. It is hoped there will be dates in Europe, and once again, details will be posted here. There will be no new material/Album, this is purely a Tour. Watch this space. I see that many of you may doubt the merits of this reformed Roxy, but for someone who never got the chance to see them live it could be magnificent. They won't dare leaving out continental Europe, do they??? I hope that they will continue to continue after the tour and, yes, record a new album, unlike the Velvets in 1993 who unfortunately split up. Going a step further: if they indeed recorded tracks in the studio, I believe an Eno involvement would be not too unlikely, would it?
