It's interesting but misses out my favorite hook (the piano bit on the repeated "in love" line). One of the more bearable covers of a Roxy song. "More For Your Pleasure" anyone? SimonG >>> "Chris Turner" 01/18 7:07 pm >>> Sea Breezes was released as a single by McGear (by co-incidence on Island Records, from memory) and appeared on his solo album I think. McGear is Paul McCartney's brother, and the Wings influence is clear. The version is an uptempo run-through, and those familiar with McCartney's stuff at that time will recognise the arrangement style. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 12:35:48 -0800 From: "Ivor Canning" Subject: Re: [AVALON] McGear at Sea Simon put me off my cornflakes with: > "More For Your Pleasure" anyone? What a ghastly, sad apology for a tribute album this is !! While bands like Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull get the star treatment (endorsed by the appearance of former band members) Roxy has to make do with limp attempts at note-for-note recreations by what sounds suspiciously like one bloke (who clearly failed the local pub 'Stars In Their Eyes' audition) with a Casiotone VL-Tone and a Kay electric guitar, recorded through his mum's radiogram. Oh...plus a token appearance by Arthur Brown (whose world really has gone crazy if he's reduced to appearing on this sort of piffle) and the Slamm version of 'Virginia Plain' (about which I have now said far too much). Add to this the fact that half-a-dozen songs are Ferry solo/Roxy covers anyway and you have a product for which the term "shoddy" could only be a compliment. This is an album which can only aspire to the 'Woolies' bargain bin. It is my fervent hope that there is special place in hell reserved for 'Clit Richards' and his truly Shatner-esque 'Street Life'... Compare this with the Tull tribute album 'To Cry You A Song' which includes superb performances from Phil Manzanera, John Wetton, Ian McDonald, Roy Harper, Keith Emerson, Glenn Hughes and Robby Steinhardt as well as ex-Tullers Mick Abrahams, Glen Cornick, Clive Bunker and Dave (and Matthew) Pegg. Hanging's too good etc etc... Regards, Ivor. n.p. I 've got a lot of the old TOTP covers albums from the 70's which feature Roxy/Ferry covers,& they are hilarious! the music is passable but they never seem to get the voice right, I've also got a "sounds like Roxy" lp by a group whose name i can't remember at the moment, it features most of the singles up to Oh Yeah,& that is worse, So go easy on at least a professional attempt to do a tribute,I might be in a minority but i think the Slamm record works.(almost) Steve (Don't ask me why i buy these things, perhaps it's a disease.!) ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 10:05:49 -0800 From: David Firmin Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy Covers The Explorers Live at the Palace James Wraith does an uncanny Ferry impersonation on Roxy Music track "Out Of The Blue". My criticism is that they stick a bit too closely to the originals. And as a whole it works much better than the 'all-star' Dreamhome Heartaches compilation. The best tribute effort though is the Japanese LITD compilation. There are a few honkers in there, but they usually try to do something interesting with the arrangement (Grey Lagoons is transformed into a slow sultry jazzer with a sprightly tempo change to a violin middle-eight - I can hear Ive mumbling about 'sacrilege' now...) The Japanese voices, mainly female, give the tracks a lovely twee quality too. I've had a long-held view that not only does Ferry interpret songs intended for female voices superbly (Will You Love Me Tomorrow, much of ATGB, etc), but also that many Ferry-penned songs are well suited for female interpretations (To Turn You On by Wendi Slaton, Dance Away by Natalie Dawn, LITD by the Divinyls, 10,000 Maniacs MTT, etc) Chris BTW.
