A common enough sentiment. I'm not sure that Sinfield was lazy, my guess is he was inexperienced and I sometimes wonder how much the studio and/or the engineer had to do with it also. It certainly wasn't Roxy's fault - amply demonstrated by the album 'Photos Of Ghosts' by the progressive band P.F.M. In February 1973, they too entered Command Studios, London with Pete Sinfield and engineer Andy Hendriksen to record some new English-language vocals over a number of tracks issued the previous year in their native Italy. Although Sinfield didn't produce any of the Italian material, he did produce all of the new vocals plus a couple of new tracks and remixed the whole thing. The album sounds depressingly familiar and compares most unfavourably with the original Italian tracks. But then, studios (and their particular equipment) can carry a distinctive sound - Peter Gabriel's second solo album and Gentle Giant's 'The Missing Piece' were both recorded at Relight Studios, Hilvarenbeek around the same time in the late seventies. Both albums suffer from a very similar odd, dull, middling tone despite having different producers and engineers. Still, I bet Chris Thomas would have done a better job... I'm going fusion? Sorry, Christian, it was just a typically silly pun on my part ! Nuclear fusion (as in 'H' Hydrogen to 'He' Helium of the album title) and jazz fusion (hence 'going fusion', like 'going punk'). Then again, I've probably been misreading that old album title all these years. S8^) Anyway, thanks for the recommendations. I guess there will be a remastered albums reissue soon, following the box set (that's usually the way, isn't it ?). > ...for a start, that is. The concert was unique, I've just returned.
