How time flies... ) Latest news on A Mad Affair, Saturday Feb 17th 2001, as follows : To date, we have 82 Ticket reservations, from the 100 we are permitted by the venue. So, just 18 only remain, if there's anyone out there who has been dragging those new heels brought by Santa. Once we reach that magical figure - that's all folks ! - as do bear in mind that entrance to this event, is STRICTLY BY TICKET ONLY. ! - as instructed by the Venue itself. Anyone left behind after that, would have to rely on a late cancellation if they wish to attend, so don't miss out ! Only 5 of the 82 are 'maybes' - until some Avalonians check out their time off work/travel situation. So, here's the rub... As mentioned previously, we have secured a 'Year 2000 rate' for the Venue itself, on the condition we pay all costs up front (Venue hire, late license, food costs etc) one month in advance - in otherwords by January 17th. Similarly, the Band travel & insurance situation is in the same boat (excuse the pun) - with Stena offering us an excellent rate - providing it is booked and paid for, by January 15th. So kiddies, it's THAT time ! To date, just 24 out of 82 have paid - (though that's not too surprising being in the middle of this rather chaotic time of year !) - so we do need the rest of the Tickets paid for - and quickly ! - within approx 10 days, to enable us to secure our preferential rates, and to nail all our plans for the evening down 100 %. Therefore, if you have a Ticket number reserved, and have not yet either sent a Cheque or arranged a C/Card payment, please do so by next week - January 12th - at the very, very latest, to secure your Ticket. As ever, you can contact me at johnny.reece@virgin.net (All Dutch Avalonians only to contact Ron Snelderweert re payments...) Meanwhile, if you are one of the 5 'maybes' - you know who you are - do keep me informed of your plans. All tickets which have been reserved and paid for, will be mailed out to you all after January 17th... Finally, Ron and the Remakes have been keeping the 'Mad Affair diary' and also invite your suggestions for their setlist for the evenings merriment, on their webpage... www.geocities.com/re_make_re_model/ See you all at 'The Spot' where the beat's really hot ! I've updated the Avalon-site at http://www.avalon.pp.se . If you go to the article section, you will find "Ferry in flight drama", three articles about the eventful flight to Nairobi on Dec 29th. Many thanks to Jane Collard who mailed me the interwiev and picture from Mail on Sunday! I've also added the interview with Otis Ferry from August, about his love of foxhunting. Was terribly shocked to be called by my mother and told Ferry was on the plane that nearly nose-dived en route to Nairobi, and even more astounded when I saw the pictures on the news that evening of Ferry standing but a mere 3 rows away from the hub of the drama. I can't even begin to imagine the horror all those poor people must have felt at the point when they thought their numbers were up. It wouldn't surprise me one little bit if Mr Ferry didn't decide to put everything else on hold for a while and devote himself to spending more time with his family, after all he spent a hefty chunk of it separated from them last year. And I wonder how ready he'd now be to fly 18 hours to do a concert in China. I hope BA have the good grace to provide councilling for anyone from the flight who needs it. The pilot was interviewed the day after the incident and said he couldn't sleep, who knows what effect such a near death experience will have as the reality of the situation sinks in over the next few weeks. Isaac sounds like a budding reporter in the making, showing remarkable maturity for a lad who's just come that close to disaster. Let's hope 2001 turns into a better year for everyone. Well, it's good that death remains the friend he still has to meet. I would have been knocked out for weeks, maybe months if he had died. It's of course terrible for all of the 400 passengers, but I wonder what effect this might have on him, Lucy and the children. I guess when you read the news your faces were not as cool as some of your replies... >He then made several solo albums but his career faded for a while before he >returned last year with a critically acclaimed solo album "As Time Goes By." It made me curious to revisit Roxys own BBC sessions from 1972 and 1973. The first of these was recorded on January 4th 1972, two months before the LP itself was recorded in Piccadilly. Dave OList (of The Nice fame) was filling Manzaneras shoes at this point with some strange twists. I like his playing particularly on If There Is Something and Remake-Remodel (although overall I think it worked out better that Manzanera eventually stepped in). The Bob also has some entertaining Mackay/ OList tomfoolery in the middle. This was not included on the album version and neither were the war sirens that open the song. According to Radio 1 producer John Muir it was after this first session that he found OList lying flat on his back after a band brawl. Soon after, at an EG audition, OList had his lights punched out by Paul Thompson and played no further part in Roxy. Therefore this BBC session is the only time you can here OList playing with Roxy. I wonder if the band were peeved that he had overplayed his hand at this particular BBC session. Or did OList have the gall to criticise The Great PTs playing? Thompson later said of OList he never wanted me in the band anyway. The songs from the second session are closer to the album versions. Somebody called Peter Paul picks up bass duties from Graham Simpson (who had suffered a nervous breakown earlier that month). Has anyone got more information on Peter Paul? Another curiosity is that this session was recorded on the 23rd of May 1972, the same day that Roxy performed their first public concert (The Great Western Festival in Lincoln). Rik Kenton was definitely on bass for Lincoln. So surely this isnt a recording of that gig. The sleeve info may be wrong of course (they spelt Bryans name with an i after all). Roxy recorded two more sessions for the BBC, the last of which they did in March 1973. Like OList only a year earlier, Eno now appears to be taking things into his own hands. On Pyjamarama, for example, he mixes Mackays sax solo such that it sounds like a pig being slowly strangled. Its a mess and if Ferry wasnt able to tolerate OList getting too adventurous then he certainly wasnt going to sit around and watch Eno muck up some of his best work. Eno was booted out only three months later and in retrospect its not that difficult to see why. Anyway these sessions are extremely enjoyable, especially the earliest one. The BBC has released a number of high profile sessions recently and a Roxy release surely looms in the near future. It would be nice if this were to happen if only for the improved sound quality, packaging, and sleeve notes to set the record straight. The Bowie discs included material that wasnt originally transmitted so we may be in for a few treats as well. I hope so. Regards, Drew p.s. Many thanks to Kicki for putting the Ferry picture on her site and also to another list member for mailing me the photo (Bryan still looks traumatised - not). _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/ ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 01:40:58 -0000 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: RE: [AVALON] BBC sessions Roxy's first public appearance was on Saturday the 27th of May 1972, not the 23rd. I have a programme from the festival. There were more than three BBC sessions - John Peel's Sounds of The Seventies, Top Gear, In Concert, two OGWT appearances, etc, These tracks are best catalogued on CD bootleg First Kiss, but have appeared in various guises on 3764 bootlegs (at least...). A complete remastered re-release would be welcome, but there is much repetition of tracks, so it is maybe unlikely to be complete. Hey everyone. I've been running short on list managing time, and have gotten progressively more annoyed with logging on to find a pile bounce messages, etc. I've been losing interest in pop/popish music lately, and have decided to cut back on my pop music lists so that I can devote more time to the other ones. I figure there ought to be at least one person interested in taking over avalon. It wouldn't mean moving the list to another server or anything like that...just giving the new owner the list password and changing the owner registered in the list configuration file. (Replies off-list, I should think, so as not to bore everyone else.)
