Full marks to Diane for a fine choice of venue at the Tron Theatre bar. It was pure dead gallus. (That's got a lot of you non Scots looking out your Scots dialect dictionaries out) It took a little longer than normal to get there as I had to stop and feed the huskies several times on the way down. On arrival I met Diane and Therese with her brother Raymond who all had a look of "oh good someone has turned up on this arctic weather night!". Soon to arrive where Jim Lawn and Gardner Muirhead who I met for the first time. We retired to the lounge to participate in the consumption of intoxicating liquor. After a wee while of swapping Ferry stories a gentleman came across to our table and asked if we were the Roxy Music crowd. We wondered how he knew but I think the fact that Diane and Therese had come dressed as Amanda Lear and Marlyn Cole was a dead give away. The guy introduced himself as Graham Fairlie who described himself as a lurker and it was great to meet him too. Diane was disappointed that the karaoke guy hadn't turned up as she had been rehearsing Beauty Queen note for note so her and Diane strutted their stuff doing an accapella version of The Thrill Of It All' After being mobbed by a few autograph hunters they were asked by a talent scout in the audience to sign up for a contract to support to Re-make/Re-model on their world tour. We then had a game of Roxy/Ferry song charades. When it came to Graham's turn he said "5 Words" still we couldn't get it, he then said "3rd word" and indicated "2 syllables" and indicated that the first syllable was something like sleep. We were still puzzled!!. We soon guessed the answer with his next clue but what a look we were getting from the others in the pub when Graham's clue was a mime with an inflatable doll. The drinks were flowing and the company was great. I was drinking some strange beer that they only sold on half pints, I soon found out why. 'You go To My Head' became a very poignant song to me. As I returned from the toilet I passed the gents and realised I had just peed in the Broom cupboard. By midnight we were reminded by the bar staff that it was chucking out time, but not to be beat, we headed off to another place that was open until 3. As I walked out the door, the street seemed less in focus than I remember and the buildings, I'm sure, were a lot steadier than when I went in. Hark the frozen chimes of winter I thought as I stared at the crystal shimmer of Argyle Street. Of course we had to have the obligatory snowball fight. It was easy to spot that I was the only highlander as I was the only one who could make a snowball without wearing gloves. We arrived at the Polo lounge looking like we were heading to a 'Bad Dandruff Convention' We arrived at the entrance and after digging down 6 feet we eventually found the front door and had a few wee drams to keep the winter away from our bones. By 3 AM there wasn't a Taxi in Glasgow to be got so a long walk home was had by all. Thanks to all for wonderful company and hospitality. See you in London. ******************** THE CHARACTERS AND EVENTS OF THIS STORY ARE PURELY FICTITIOUS AND ANY RESEMBLANCE TO ANYONE LIVING OR DEAD AND ANY EVENT PAST AND PRESENT ARE PURELY COINCIDENTAL ******************** Happy New Year John O'Brien ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 08:31:52 -0500 From: jeremy72@mindspring.com Subject: Re: Re: [AVALON] Transcript of Interview on Later Cool interview!!! "blah blah blah British pop star Bryan Ferry blah blah blah" with Mr. Ferry's mug plastered on the screen for a good 10 seconds (the same photo from one of the links earlier today). And while I was standing in the pathetically long lines at the grocery store this evening (Washingtonians! We're going to get an inch of snow. Get a grip!) having been thwarted in my attempt to find anything beyond the basics for the black tie dinner I am giving to welcome the real millennium, I came to the sudden realization that today Mr. Ferry has received more attention from American TeeVee than he has in this whole calendar year combined. Which led me to think (and perhaps someone would be kind enough to forward this to his management): in order to promote the new album here in the States, Mr. Ferry should regularly be put in and rescued from some sort of danger starting about 5 or so weeks before it comes out. I envision something like this: t-5 weeks--Mr. Ferry could be stranded by the side of road with a flat tire on a cold, rainy/snowy day t-4 weeks--he could narrow escape from a load of pianos being unloaded from above t-3 weeks--he could be rescued from a ferry which had a very slow leak. Sort of like _Titanic_, only mercifully shorter and, even more mercifully, without Celine Dion. (at this point he would start to be invited on late night American talk shows and he could say "and I have a new album coming out in a month") t-2 weeks--he could narrowly miss driving over a bridge which is washed away by flood waters (this should get him on Oprah, maybe with Dr. Phil) t-1 weeks--he could be kidnapped in South America. Oh right, that's _Proof of Life_. He could be saved at the last minute from eating beef with mad cow disease. (this should get him on _People_) It would be sort of like Tom Cruise saving people's lives right and left only from a more plaintive angle. Respectfully submitted, Colleen J. Ferry, Helmore and two of their sons were on board the plane for a New Year holiday on the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar and were sleeping when the plane started reeling and diving as the suspect grabbed at the cockpit controls. "I have done a lot of plane flights in my life but this is the most eventful," Ferry told Reuters with a laugh after taking another flight to the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam on Friday night. "I was very frightened but I'm very relieved to be here on dry land." When asked if she thought they were about to die, Helmore simply said: "Yes." She said she tried to look after her children as the plane went into a dive. "I was trying to keep them calm because they were very frightened." Ferry, 55, said he was sleeping when the drama began. "I woke up thinking we were going through some bad turbulence but I think we were on the third dip when I really thought about what was really happening." The suspect, a Kenyan man who police believe was mentally disturbed, was apprehended by cabin crew and some of the passengers after a violent struggle. The flight landed safely in Nairobi on Friday morning and the suspect was arrested. Four passengers and one crew member were hospitalised with minor injuries. Ferry's teenage son Isaac said the suspect was tall and strong but that the flight captain managed to fight him off. "It was suicidal. He was trying to kill everyone," he said. "He was very delirious. He seemed to be speaking to himself." Bryan Ferry was the founder and front-man of British rock band Roxy Music, which produced a string of hit singles and albums in the 1970s. Lady Annabel was travelling in the lower level club section with her son and daughter and Mrs Khan's sons, Kasim, 18 months, and Sulaiman, four. Nearby were Lady Annabel's god-daughter, Lady Cosima Somerset, and her two boys Bryan Ferry, former lead singer of the Seventies pop group Roxy Music, was seated in the upper section, next to the cockpit with his wife Lucy and three of his sons, Isaac, Tara and Merlin. Isaac, 15, had noticed the tall, muscular Kenyan man who walked from the economy section up into the business class cabin. His attention was caught by the man's peculiar behaviour. He said later: "He was holding a prayer book. He seemed to be delirious, talking away to himself. He walked up the aisle towards the cockpit and was hanging around the toilets." But Mr Goldsmith and the rest of the passengers below were unaware that the 27-year-old man had entered the cockpit through an unlocked door. He threw himself at the jet's controls, knocking out the autopilot, in a desperate suicide attempt. As the struggle between the man and the crew spilled out of the cockpit and into the upper club class section, the plane dived, then lurched, then dived again as the crew wrested back control of the craft and three passengers helped to restrain the man. Mr Goldsmith said: "All we knew was that we woke to hear these shrieks. Everyone was screaming. The plane was in a nosedive, literally. We all thought it was curtains. They managed to pull the plane out of the dive, and it lurched back up again. The engines were making shrieking noises. "Suddenly there was a violent stall and the whole plane was shuddering. Then it went into another dive. There was silence except for the emergency alarms and the seat belt signs going on and off, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong. "It lurched to the left, and that was it. We knew we were really low down. We saw the ground coming up at us steeply, and everything was pouring down to the front of the plane - people, luggage, everything. One of the stewardesses smashed her ankle as she fell down really roughly to the front of the plane." Mr Goldsmith said: "My sister was sitting there with her two little boys, absolutely terrified. My mother was sitting by my side. I said to her, 'We're going to die, we're going to die. Goodbye'. We really thought this was it. The lights went out. The oxygen masks had dropped. Then the plane gave another lurch, like a rollercoaster, a kind of weightless rolling forward. "It was pretty touch and go. But we somehow got back into the upper position and we bumped back above the clouds and evened out. The pilot came on to the tannoy, totally out of breath, and said, 'A very nasty man has just tried to kill us all, but the plane is all right now'. "Then the lights came back on. Everyone was hugging each other. It's all a bit of a haze now. It seemed so surreal at the time. I had mentally prepared myself that I was going to die. I have never been so terrified in all my life. "Then we were just cruising along at normal altitude. The pilot came back on and tried to explain what had happened and said a man had been trussed up and the plane had been secured. "The crew were wonderful, so brave. They must have been as terrified as all of us, yet the stewardesses were going up and down reassuring everyone. They gave hot tea to people, and vodka. And I think a lot of people started smoking. There was the sound of a lot of heavy drags. "The pilot came on later and said five or six seconds more and the plane would have tilted on to its back and blown up, so we were literally seconds from death. Bryan Ferry and his family were up on top, so they had a better idea of what was going on. Isaac managed to videotape some of it." Isaac, speaking by phone from Nairobi airport, said: "The co-pilot and the pilot were involved in a struggle with the man. Then two people broke into the cockpit and dragged him out. It looked as though they had gouged his eye and they secured him with seat belts. The security staff removed him when we landed. He wasn't trying to hijack the plane, it was a suicidal attack. He wanted the plane to crash." Bryan Ferry, 55, told reporters: "I have done a lot of plane flights in my life but this is the most eventful. I was very frightened but I'm very relieved to be here on firm land." He had been asleep when the drama began. "I think we were on the third dip when I fully realised what was happening." When asked if she thought they were about to die, his wife simply said: "Yes". ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 20:23:51 -0600 From: jas2347@xsite.net Subject: [AVALON] Lady Trump Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 07:06:08 +0000 From: "Martin Stockman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Transcript of Interview on Later I stumbled across this at http://www.bbc.co.uk/later/artists/s14/1/atthepiano_ferry.shtml Worth a look Thanks Martin. Wow, that woke me up! It's bad enough that so little seems to be mentioned about Bryan in the US press but a near disaster, whew.
