What always pisses me off about football clubs and their so called celebrity supporters, is that they always manage to get the corporate hospitality and FA Cup Final tickets, while us mere mortals who have supported the club through thick and thin all our lives and still go to all the matches, never get a sniff of a ticket and have to pay through the nose to get one (#700 was the going rate from touts at the Newcastle v Man United FA Cup Final, and I believe Mr Ferry and sons were in the directors box). But what do we do Steve if a one-off Roxy Reunion gig clashed with the Toon's appearance at the next FA Cup Final? (oh look, a flying pig!) And may I take the opportunity of wishing all you lovely Avalonians worldwide a very fab Christmas and a "what's in store?" for 2001? PS: Don't forget a MAD AFFAIR ticket makes a great Xmas present! And monies ASAP to Reecey or there'll be no turkey for Tiny Tim in the Reece and Fiske households this year!! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2000 12:22:54 -0000 From: Jocelyn Fiske Subject: RE: [AVALON] On this side of the Atlantic... It was a sad day yesterday in music. I know very little of Kristy McCol outside of a few songs that WXRT Chicago played. I guess she was very popular over there. In a ghoulish sort of way I guess we (Chicago) might be hearing more of her music in the future. Sad. On this side of the Atlantic another musician passed. Pop Stables of the Stable Singers (Respect Yourself, I'll take you There) passed away yesterday too. He had been recuperating from a fall near his home in surburban Chicago. His career spanned from playing with legendary blues great Robert Johnson, a distinguished gospel career singing with his daughters (including Mavis) and son on local television in the '60s (Andrew & Kim: Jublilee Showcase on Channel 7), a string of hit soul/pop tunes "with a message" in the 70's and 80's, and a solo career. The Stable singers did a great rendition of Talking Heads' Slippery People. He was a distinctive and understated guitarist. He and the Stable Singers sang and marched with Dr. King in the 60's and was with Dr. King when he was assassinated. The Stable singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. They gave a very stirring and soulful performance. He was a big figure here on the local music scene and very well respected. He will be sorely missed. A very sad day for music fans everywhere. A poignant reflection of Bryan's from an otherwise innocuous B&G promotional interview. From memory : "When you're young you think of all the places you'd travel, if you only had the money. Now I have the money I devote a great deal of time to travelling, uncovering new places. But when you arrive home you find you're still with the same luggage." A reference to his ability to locate the Louis Vitton on the airport carousel ? No. A passing insight of the maestro's indigo inner landscape. There have been many references to depression ; anecdotal and in the canon. The black dog. The emotional pea-souper. The boo-hoo willows. The madness in the soul. (How rich in contrast .. days spent in the drizzle at a point-to-point, nights flying to the moon on gossamer wings. Oh those lighter moments - precious few indeed !) Yet this darkness, for me, IS Ferryland. The ennui of This Island Earth, the languorous beauty of Windswept, the vacuous glamour of Your Painted Smile, the melancholy lushlife of This Love. A hundred sleepless nights that left him broken and so cold. No amount of Alice Retif's poetic pillow talk can ease the pain. Ferryland is a bleak Northumbrian coast, a night that never ends.
