I met her many, many moons ago when as junior graphic designers fresh from college we hung out with the designers at Stiff records. She was a woman with a blistering wit. Very funny and very charming. My heart really goes out to her kids. - -----Original Message----- From: Chris Turner [mailto:ferryman@freeuk.com] Sent: 19 December 2000 23:43 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: RE: [AVALON] Roger Bunn By a strange co-incidence Roger used to be bass player with Peggy Seeger, who was of course Kirsty McColl's mother. It was a sad day yesterday in music. I know very little of Kristy McCol outside of a few songs that WXRT Chicago played. I guess she was very popular over there. In a ghoulish sort of way I guess we (Chicago) might be hearing more of her music in the future. Sad. On this side of the Atlantic another musician passed. Pop Stables of the Stable Singers (Respect Yourself, I'll take you There) passed away yesterday too. He had been recuperating from a fall near his home in surburban Chicago. His career spanned from playing with legendary blues great Robert Johnson, a distinguished gospel career singing with his daughters (including Mavis) and son on local television in the '60s (Andrew & Kim: Jublilee Showcase on Channel 7), a string of hit soul/pop tunes "with a message" in the 70's and 80's, and a solo career. The Stable singers did a great rendition of Talking Heads' Slippery People. He was a distinctive and understated guitarist. He and the Stable Singers sang and marched with Dr. King in the 60's and was with Dr. King when he was assassinated. The Stable singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. They gave a very stirring and soulful performance. He was a big figure here on the local music scene and very well respected. He will be sorely missed. A very sad day for music fans everywhere. Why not? Cos it's now a glossy weekly, and is printed too far ahead of release date to "stop the presses" and put together a tribute to itself!!! This amuses me, obscurely. What it does contain is a small, hastily inserted, one-sided half-page sized sheet (it was apparently delayed getting on the newstands for a day as a result) bearing the following message: "We're sorry to tell you that this the very final weekly issue of Melody Maker. From next week we merge with NME... [blah blah classified ads blah] ...We'd like to thank all of our loyal readers for their years of support. You've been great. Stay beautiful." Pathetic. But maybe NME will carry a tribute. If I recall correctly, it was Richard Williams in the pages of Melody Maker who first championed Roxy in print, before they had the first album out. It's a significant part of the band's history (see manzanera.com for details). But then, Malady Maker was a proper magazine back then, with proper writers! Maybe it will be a special issue looking back over its "career", I don't know. If you like, I could pick up a copy and mail it over. Be warned, nostalgia ain't what it used to be; the inky old newsprint MM was replaced by a glossy, smaller magazine format some years ago. I always preferred the NME (New Musical Express). Remember that Johnny Rotten line: "I am the enemy; I am an-ar-chy"? It always sounded like: "I am the NME" to me. Sigh. Those were the days. X Guy PS: And icicles to grok, eh? I have been catching up on a weeks worth of e-mail, and tucked in among the debates about the Prez and the supreme court on another music list was an announcement that the Melody Maker had ceased publication after 74 years. Now, I hadn't read it in years, but in High School we used to get it (one freind would steal it) from the Old Main Street News Stand in Evanston. We would get it four weeks late.... Through the MM I read about Devo a full six monthes before we were able to hear them., for example. (It took seeing them live to convince my crowd that Devo had a long "e"). I remember anxiously following the Roxy Reunion news in the MM. Andfollowing the explosion that eventually became punk. Enough nostalgia, I have snow to dig.
