Be warned, nostalgia ain't what it used to be; the inky old newsprint MM was replaced by a glossy, smaller magazine format some years ago. I always preferred the NME (New Musical Express). I have been catching up on a weeks worth of e-mail, and tucked in among the debates about the Prez and the supreme court on another music list was an announcement that the Melody Maker had ceased publication after 74 years. Now, I hadn't read it in years, but in High School we used to get it (one freind would steal it) from the Old Main Street News Stand in Evanston. We would get it four weeks late.... Through the MM I read about Devo a full six monthes before we were able to hear them., for example. (It took seeing them live to convince my crowd that Devo had a long "e"). I remember anxiously following the Roxy Reunion news in the MM. Andfollowing the explosion that eventually became punk. Enough nostalgia, I have snow to dig. I liked NME better, too, but I never saw a NME until the early 80's. I associate MM with classic rock bands and NME with "new music" (yeah, I know New Wave and Punk were 20 years ago...we going to start pointing fingers at the old farts now?). - -Rob ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2000 07:57:41 -0800 From: "David Firmin" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Cold Turkey I'm sure the other Roxy members would like to hear Ferry's take on "You Never Give Me Your Money" ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2000 07:57:28 EST From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] New Album I dont know if this is news to you guys but apparently the new album will feature two Horoscope tracks. Obviously this is speculation, but as this was due to be featured in the box set it would explain the delay. According to rumours I have heard, the album is now complete. A belated contribution to the "Beatles covers" discussion.... "Something" - definitely "The Long and Winding Road" (acoustic, with piano, in the style of "The Only Face" on tour this year) and for the up-tempo number... It all comes down to how you feel about YOU. I'm off to soak in the hot springs at Berkeley Springs, it might be extra gorgeous since it might be snowing there, so I'm feeling pretty good and pretty good about myself. Thanks for asking. I wasn't going to respond to this. But I thought about it for a bit and changed my mind. This is a *discussion* list. Therefore for it to be more than a gigantic waste of time, unless people draw attention to the fact that they know what they know, it's pointless to be here unless you're just talking out of your (singular and plural) ass/arse. There are many on-topic topics discussed on this list which I have no or little knowledge of and/or interest in. However, instead of taking that as a personal affront, I do one of two things: (1) if I have no interest in the subject, delete those posts after skimming them or (2) if I discover I have an interest in the subject, try to find out more about it. Please note that (3) asking people to hide their lights and areas of relevant (and even irrelevant) interest under a barrel at the expense of the vibrancy and diversity of the list is not one of my personal options. As I said the other day, it's not about you (singular and plural). And I as I add today, your (singular and plural) trumpeting your ignorance won't silence folks who have something to share with the group. Do you know if there is a confirmed buyer, or might this album go by the way of Horoscope? As discussed in the past, Jim Lawn had stated on bryanferry.com that the boxed set would be delayed, as follows: < Re: Bryan Ferry Box Set by jim on 23-Apr-00 I am not sure of the date for the boxed set as a tape of unreleased studio material has surfaced within the 'Avalon' mailing list. Unfortunately this was passed to someone who has bootlegged the material for commercial gain. Whilst I believe that the people responsible for this are genuinley fans of Bryans, it should be noted that their criticism of the INFORMATION SERVICE is slightly at odds with one of their members exploiting this tape commercially. That said, we are still working on a four CD set which will include rare and unreleased material. It will also include a number of photographs which have never been seen before > Again, Thanks for the info! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2000 18:22:00 EST From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Going Going Gone In a message dated 16/12/00 20:54:36 GMT Standard Time, kbporte@attglobal.net writes: << Good to hear rumors of an album complete. I can tell you that there is good evidence to suggest that there are at least 24 - 30 unreleased tracks in the archives, 22 of which I have titles for. And all this does not include this year's recording frenzy. Additionally, documented artistic liaisons with people such as Chris Difford, Jonny Greenwood or Brian Eno may have spawned further recorded output. There is a complete album in existence, which has lain unreleased since 1996 (I have the titles), and other tracks stretching back for 10 years. One should never trust rumours at the best of times, but this is a particularly pertinent maxim when it comes to Ferry. It's not that people set out to deceive you, it's just that in Ferryland sea change is entirely normal. One thing that is said in good faith, and which is entirely true at the time it is said, can be wrong a week later. Examples would be the announcement of the UK release of Dance With Life in 1996 which was pulled after catalogue numbers and promo copies had already been issued. How about the recent announcement that The Early Years was to support a BBC TV series called Street Life? Or the TV cameras at Castle Howard? Again, these never came to fruition despite previous cast-iron guarantees. I am concerned that the cycle which began with Horoscope, of recording a project, and then abandoning it to put out cover material, is repeating itself. Horoscope was before Taxi, the Stewart album preceded As Time Goes By in its recording, and now I hear that cover versions have been the substance of his latest sessions, and the current policy of using 'real' musicians is at odds with the heavily produced multi-tracked stuff of Horoscope/Mamouna. It's unlikely that these opposed styles would sit comfortably together on a single album, particularly for a man who creates (how does it go Martin?) 'aural soundscapes' and themed output. I don't blindly like everything he's ever done, but he's never released an album which didn't have something stimulating on it. Ferry may have some cracking material in his locker, and now with his public profile is at its highest for fifteen years, it's time to let the public decide by putting some of that material out. BTW, within the last three months, three separate, normally credible sources have told me that a reformed Roxy Music will tour next year in a Greatest Hits style package. Again, believe it if you like, but personally I'll wait until I have the tickets in my hand.
