But wouldn't you say, that in general, the 1999/2000 tour was performed by a more original and unique-sounding outfit? Also, I felt that the backing-vox orgasm on Dream Home was very explosive, but a bit to exaggerated in my mind (on that tour). The backing singers were great, that's for sure, but it's a bit of a problem I hear when listening to say, The Right Stuff: lots of female soulful backing vox, but Bryan not that much to the fore. I think that's been much better on Taxi, Mamouna and ATGB. But I'm probably telling you nothing new... The more important question is: Why are certain issues continually raised in this forum? Because, they are unresolved issues, important issues in the eyes of list members who do not appreciate censorship of list content by some list members who pander to outside influences. Slam the archives, slam me or anyone else, if it makes you happy. But these issues will come forward until this list is left to exist as a natural entity with natural discourse. From US movies I've learned that suspects are kept apart pending trial, as they are in Sweden, if I'm not incorrect. Is this common in the UK, that suspects awaiting trial freely can discuss and coordinate their stories? Or is the fiction? I don't mind what anyone wants to discuss (big of me huh?), that's up to them, but give it a drink. The same old back biting just goes on and on and on...... IT'S BORING. The place used to be fun, fun, fun. Now it's stab, stab, stab. Where did all that come from? And when nice guys like Johnny Reece get dragged into it, a guy who has done and continues to do more for this list than most, and is prepared to scour long forgotten Parisian record shops to find nuggets for other list members, then I despair. I joined this forum not just for the discussion platform or the information available on list but for the community spirit, and we seem to be very imbalanced at the moment. The tour was amazing fun, not just because we went to see Ferry, but because we all met up with each other and had fun TOGETHER. It's great that I can go to Chicago and be able to e-mail 3 people I've never met before but feel I know well enough to want to spend a fun evening with (even though time restraints prevented it this time round). Going to Moscow with John O'Brien made the trip. Badgering Martino is fab fun and all done in great camaraderie and he knows it. A lot of people have e-mailed me off list to remark that the list has become devoid of humour of late - maybe too many personal agendas going on,no? Pray tell. Maybe my sarcy comments lose something in translation, there is rarely malice intended (and boy, you'd know if there was). And how do you know that Chris didn't piss himself laughing at the replies he received? Why assume he's no less self effacing that the rest of us? Let's give all this angst the heave-ho and get back to madness in our souls! Jocelyn PS. Since this involves me, I will reply. I deliberately singled no one out in my initial post. The only reason I even reposted that information was because my veracity was called into question. I don't know Johnny, I've never had one off-list exchange with him, and have no real opinion on him positive or negative. You need a real newsreader. Go to Forte Inc and download a copy of Free Agent at this address: http://www.forteinc.com/agent/freagent.htm This will help convert the messages to actual files and if you have it configured correctly, you will see only the complete file listing combined into one line, and not the various parts of the file. If you are using Microsoft Outlook Express - all you have to do is go to the "alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.bootlegs" newsgroup. Look for Bryan Ferry - to arrange them in order, click SENT at the top of the column to sort them by Date ... All of the parts of the song should fall in order. To grab "Windswept" click part 1 - then look for Part 34 hold down your shift key, then click it. This should highlight all 34 parts - put your mouse over that group and right click with your mouse, and choose "Combine and Decode". When the dialog box opens ... scroll through the parts and make sure they are in the right order, and click OK. December 6th. So, where's the time gone ? It's floated by so quickly. For many Avalonians on this side of the pond, myself included, it was one year ago today, when, unbeknown to us all at the time, a chain of events began which meant that nothing would quite ever be the same again. Bry played the Golders Green Hippodrome (the 'freebie' BBC gig) one whole year ago today. Not that that's remarkable in itself, but I do think what sparked off afterwards - a chain of great times, travel, gigs, many, many new friendships - that's what was amazing. That night was the first night I had actually met many Avalonians - same for a load of us I guess - as a squad gathered in a Hampstead Pub apres-Gig. The meeting of the clans, no less, as J.O'B made his way down for this one too. It was also the first time in years that I'd met up with fellow Roxy fan Ivor again. Barely a week later, and many of us were esconced in the front row at RFH. We all know what followed - a whistle-stop tour for many round the UK, taking in Glasgow, Newcastle, Sheffield, etc ... This carried through to the European dates in Feb and March, in Belgium and Holland, where the now infamous 'Dutch contingent' came to the fore for the very first time. (We ALL know who they are now - that's for sure !)... It also meant a major get-together in Paris for many of us too, which was brill. The RAH in April was, we thought, just about the end of it, until suddenly the outdoor Gigs came into view, and the whole thing kicked off again, big, big, big time. More travels across the waters for the Dutch for Petworth and Castle Howard, and me in the opposite direction for The Hague. Great times all. So many new and wonderful friends met, followed by drink-ups, chats, weekends & get-togethers at Petworth, Blickling, Castle Howard, Tatton Park etc, and I was even responsible for an Anglo-American Wedding for getting 2 people together at Elton Hall ! (Hiya, Paul & Debs...- yes it's all my fault !) - and great times had, by so many (you know who you all are) all in the space of one short Year. Funny how time slips away. Anyway, just to bring it to your attention - hard to believe it's a year ago when all this madness in my soul (and yours, too) kicked off. Time, spent well, is so rare. Think I'll go and play my fave Roxy song now, and ponder over those 12 months. Sentimental Fool, indeed. Reecey... ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 20:00:02 -0500 (EST) From: Colleen Matan Subject: [AVALON] birds in their little nest agree --This is a discussion list. People will disagree with your ideas and opinions. People will ask you to elaborate on them. There will be an expectation that you will be able to respond or even defend them. If your response to this situation is to get upset that someone disagreed with you or otherwise engaged you in conversation and/or to be upset because you cannot discuss the underpinnings of your own opinions and ideas and/or to launch a personal attack (be it explicit or implicit), well, to tell you the truth, I don't know what to think, which is why I find myself writing this post. --While this list certainly has had its uproars and tempests in teapots over the years (it's probably a good thing that that Siren debate is lost to us), if there has been an increase in discussions and disagreements turning personal, it can be traced not a few months, but a few years back. On a personal note, I have disagreed with folks here, on other lists, and in real life about random issues for years. It is only of late and only on this forum that the increasingly routine response has been to call me names and to take miscellaneous pot shots at me. Unfortunately for those of you so inclined, I cannot be intimidated into shutting up because you can't refute my ideas on their merits. Furthermore, if it makes you feel better about yourself to imagine me as "sad" and "bitter" (the current Fav-O-Rites), please don't stop there. Please feel free to imagine me as "friendless," "pathetic," "dour," "humo[u]rless," and "[fill in the blank]." Don't forget the allopecia. And the hunchback (although I would much prefer a "dowager's hump" myself). No, really--I insist. I am truly sorry (sometimes) that I cannot simply swallow whole everything I read here. On the other hand, I am truly sorry (always) that it is preferred that I and others do so. But it is not unreasonable nor some sort of veiled insult nor unexpected that when you put something forward in this forum someone may with to engage you in a conversation about it. [Perhaps we should should have the option to mark some of our posts (in the header) as ICADTIJTOUMA (I Can't Actually Discuss This; I'm Just Talking Out Of My Ass/Arse).] Frankly I think that'd be a great loss to the vibrancy and life of this list. Yes, negative feelings sap the life of the list. But so does a list culture where to question or to disagree about issues is to invite unprovoked attacks on your person. I get mail too you know (or maybe y'all don't), and some interesting, vibrant, intelligent, funny people who care passionately about music are either quiet or have left the list because they have disagreed with some of the ideas presented here over the years, but can't be bothered to participate because of this exact nonsense. People who care passionately about things can discuss, even argue about, them passionately. It is possible to disagree with someone, even violently, and still not dislike them. It is possible to have a passionate discussion, even an argument, about an idea and not sink to personal attacks. It is possible to gaze at something or someone with the brilliantly, at times even harshly, illuminating gaze of a highly critical eye, and to still love it/him/her with every last ounce of your being. My user name on Napster is "cuttuc". In Napster, click on Actions, Add User to Hot List, and type in cuttuc. If I'm online, highlight my name in your hot list and it should display my file directory. I don't generally leave Napster running when I'm not using it, but will leave it logged on for a day or two so folks here can get the songs.
