Anyone? Certainly. I like him very much for his shyness and his relentless questioning of his own music, honestly. I always find characters with contradictory elements more interesting, though that's a bit obvious. I think it must appear weird to him that he's being reduced to a cool, suave person - Ferry is someone who really doesn't fit an easy category, and thank god! And he's right that current should not be wasted. Put forward the album though. (A gross simplification of Martin's position, but about right...?) My point being that even when he he was young and ironic, the insecurities would have been there under the surface anyway. I agree of course that BF, like all of us, is too complex for 6 words or less. Because he writes songs which sometimes "reveal" (or appear to) his inner layers, we get to see some of the complexity. And "empathy"... well, that's probably too strong a word for me, but I can certainly relate to the persona which I glimpse through BF's words and music (and his choice of covers, to some extent). That was true in 1974, when I discovered his 1972-3 material as well as the then-current crop, and it remains true today. Which, I suspect, is why we're all here. (True also, I'm sure, of the other artists that the list collectively and individually admires, from Kate Bush through Bob Dylan via Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Howard Devoto......... ) Guy - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org]On Behalf Of KB Porter Sent: 29 November 2000 21:49 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: Re: [AVALON] Blood on a nail, kiss me again Guy wrote: "Your ironic Englishman is likely to be putting up a front behind which lurks a snakepit of insecurity."
