Can you Martin, or somebody else explain what's the magic that makes someone stylish? Can you be stylish if you.... have a funny voice..(.ET home), when you are very short, like legwrestling, wear shorts, like sting, never read a book, smell bad, like footballmanagers? Not the combination but each thing on it's own!! Is it possible to learn? Is it expensive? Or in other words: Just what it is, that makes today's stylish people so different, so appealing? Strange that no one mentioned Andy Mackay, Oscar Wilde, Al Pacino, Jules Deelder. The fireworks are going off across London as I type. Also the rain is really tipping it down and the wind is howling hard. I think the folks who celebrated yesterday had a better time of it! I had "better things to do" viz. going to see Jonathan Richman at the Forum. Man, he is good fun! The unholy offspring of Buddy Holly and Eddie Izzard, with just an acoustic guitar, a drummer and his genius to declare. He did Stop Your Sobbing as a tribute to London and The Kinks. And so much more. No-one threw fireworks at the stage. Or anything else. Except warm vibes. I thought Ivor's pun was extremely punny. I also thought that particular pic was v.naff. The criteria for choosing it must have been that it showed off the trousers and, er... well, that's it, basically. The fact that the pose also looked unnatural, uncomfortable and pretty damn silly presumably just didn't register. Fashionable beings... doncha just "luv" them? Thanks to all for your thanks. I don't know how large a venue The Forum is. I consider him to be one of our 'national treasures' in the states, and until the movie "Something About Mary", he was under the radar of damn near everyone. Only one song (Roadrunner) from the early days EVER got airplay, and that was primarily on the east coast. His reputation and following has always been by word of mouth. I saw him only once with The Modern Lovers (in '78), but have since seen him literally countless times since in tiny clubs, capacity 100 to 200, (and not always full) in his solo, or +1 or 2, mode. I've noticed that he gets to play larger clubs in the L.A. area now, since that movie .. and he has also been a late-nite TV guest on Conan O'Brian a number of times in recent years. I'm glad to see him finally get some fame. I'm confident that his unique, quirky personal style will never change as a result .. and so far, it has not. So ... how big a crowd does he draw? Is the audience familiar with his work? Do they seem to be established fans, or checking him out based on word of mouth? Just curious ... thanks! I don't know about The Forum gig that Guy was at, but Jonathan pretty much faded from 'popular' view in the UK after 'Back In Your Life' in 1979. 'Roadrunner' was a much bigger hit than the chart figures show (No. 11, according to 'The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles') but, commercially, he peaked with 'Egyptian Reggae' (No. 5) while 'Morning Of Our Lives' just made it to No. 29. I must admit I thought he lost something of the fragile charm of his quirkier songs with 'Back In Your Life'. I'm still a huge fan of 'Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers' and 'Modern Lovers Live', though. Unique, fabulous records... Our time is right now, Ive. n.p. It's a middling to large size venue, though. Several thousand I'd say... any more knowledgable types out there care to help us out here? Last time I saw him was at much smaller The Jazz Cafe which was sold out/packed solid for 3 nights, but that could have been 4 years ago now, before his starring film role. That time he played with a full band, and it was a fantastic gig; more enjoyable than his acoustic sets, but he's always ringing the changes and always good value! The audience was pretty much old-time fans, I'd say, both times. Both venues are in the Camden Town area, haunt of a hip/musicianly/arts biz crowd, so he will pull in a lot of "discerning" people because of that. I would guess he has a big following among musicians, especially those of a "certain age"!! He has a devoted following among many of my 30-something/40-ish crowd anyway, especially the alternative arts types. Chart placings are only one, very limited, way of looking at a peformer's career, aren't they? JR, like BF, has a certain something else that his fans recognise. I'm not sure what it is, but it may be "je ne sais quoi." Guy - -----Original Message----- Ida M Miller Sent: 05 November 2000 20:54 I'm interested to know how Jonathan Richman fares in England .. You move me to tears! Stylish people are, of course, Bryan Ferry Martin Stockman, Grace Jones, Princess Diana (1989 and onwards), The Duke and Duchess of Windsor ("you can never be too rich or too thin"), Frank Sinatra, Rupert Everett, Paul Newman, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and: Mr Suave, Mr Debonair, our own Avalonian, Mr Jas of Chicago! /Kicki G Now I'm in tears. Webmistress thank you so much. If only I had 1/10th the clothes budget of Bryan Ferry, I'd be happy. My whole take on style is to wear what YOU feel is comfortable. Style is about being original and making your own statement. The people on the list ( have not seen Martino yet) all knew how to "work" their own styles and as such we emulate them. I like that. I would like to add to the style hall of fame list, the orginal Temptations. Not only did they sing great and danced great, they had killer outfits (tailored suits, tuxes, etc) that had everyone I knew wanting to be them. Will: I'm really pissed at myself for missing King Crimson. I waited to long and as a result all three shows at Park West(Chicago) sold out. They got a very favorable review in one of the local papers. The reviewer said the Red was the standout amongst many high points of the evening. In "unstylish" pj's as I write this... Tommy the drummer was also besuited. He did play "...Lesbian Bar" BTW, a fave of mine too, w. lots of silly dancing, and "UFO Man" which was half in Spanish. He also had a new song about Barcelona which he'd written while he was playing there recently, also in Spanish. What a polyglot! Versions of "P.Picasso" and "Old World" were virtually "Dylanised" i.e. very different takes. "Girlfriend" and "Give Paris..." done pretty straight. No "Velevt Underground" this time, and no "Summer Feeling" or "Vincent Van Gogh" to my (mild) disappointment. A couple of men next to me shouted for "Roadrunner" at encore time.
