The concert promoter must have been trying a social experiment. Gentle Giant opening for Dr. Feelgood?? I never booed anyone offstage, but I would have either arrived late, or spent the first half at the bar. Prog Rock? - well, some bands make good music, Some are pseudo-classical-jazz-rock doodlers. It's like anyting else. Listmembers 246 Digest 94 Total 340 Probable membership is around 200 allowing for multiple subscriptions and dead links. Active membership is around 50-60. By examining the list of subscribed members e-mail addresses, I have derived a list of the nationalities represented within Avalon: Australia Austria Brazil Canada Chile Denmark Finland France Germany Israel Italy Japan Macedonia Netherlands New Zealand Norway Poland Russia Sweden UK USA Total 21 I suspect that there are more countries represented, but that their nationality is not obvious from their e-mail addresses. For example our friends from Spain do not seem to be here, and our Belgian contributor also. Please let us know if there are more of you out there. Although it passed almost without mention, October was notable for Jimmy Vapor's return from the grave, with a characteristically cryptic contribution. Good to have you back JV, we will continue to worship you... 'Better' ? Not one musical genre is better than another - only performers. I just never got high enough to get into that prog artsy-fartsy stuff, but after a couple of beers, I could pogo with the best of them. We poor unfortunates in the USA never had a pub rock scene, but we had NYC, and the great stuff that was going on there. And they all played guitars, not mellotrons. The music is simple and direct - Maybe that is what I really like about it. I'd take Richard Hell over Genesis any day. >And don't you find all those old pub rockers who jumped on the Punk/New Wave >band wagon hilarious? I doubt it was a conscious effort on their part. It was easier for the record companies to pigeonhole the artists. Punks are punks, but anyone could ride the New Wave. How else can anyone explain how Blondie (Punk or New Wave?), the Talking Heads (very progressive), Elvis C. (???), Television (avant-something) and The Cramps (psycho-billy) all ended up in the same 'movement'. No one had a creative name for it, but that had to get that product out fast. I am sure all the artists hated the tag. I thought the whole period was backlash to all that doodling prog crap. Anyone know who is credited with the 'New Wave' tag being applied to anyone 'alternative' from 1974-1984 ??
