"I just know that I think I'm going to like it." And I just know I'm going to like it, too. I've decided to post another newbie question so the in-crowd has something to laugh about: how does one obtain the Roxy Music bootlegs that are reviewed at the RoxyRama website? Should you find them at second-hand-music-shops or can you order them from a fanclub of some sort or do you have to have friends in high places? Hi all It is not very often that I post a comment, but here goes.... I do object to paying inflated prices for bootleg albums. These recordings are often made and sold by people who have no interest in the artist, they are just out to make a profit. If every member of this list would agree to swap or supply at cost the recordings that they have, then the bootleggers profits would be seriously reduced, and everyone could access the music they enjoy. Thank goodness there are several like minded persons at ava*on There, I've got it off my chest now! If, of course, anyone would like a copy of my list, please e-mail me off list Mike From: Thérčse O'Donnell To: Sent: Tuesday, October 31, 2000 5:26 PM Subject: RE: [AVALON] Look, a newbie! > Again, the e-bay auction site is good for picking up some bootlegs. It's the issue with Drew Barrymore on the cover doing her take on Lolita (see page 78..Ahem!). Okay after that bit of a rush, I turn to the records section. In the monthly section called RS Hall of Fame (highlghting Classic albums and Hall of Fame honorees and future members (Hmm..)) there is low and behold a review of... SIREN. The reviewer, Arion Berger, gave it 5 STARS(out of five). 5 is considered a Classic. My mouth just dropped to the floor when I saw it. I temporarily stopped thinking about Drew and focused in on the review. Amongths the tidbits in the review... "Bryan Ferry-still recovering from Brian Eno splitting with Roxy in 1973-literally got his act together, with the help of Phil Manzanera and Andrew Mackay, and crystallized his band's sound into glam-centric,pre-punk art rock." What no Paul Thompson or Edie Jobson even though they appear in the photo on the page. "....brainy lyrics on a concept album weren't just for Emerson, Lake and Palmer anymore"... Huh? "It took Roxy Music five records and the loss of one genius to sculpt an impossible paradox out of rock and its expressions: elaborately cool, genuinely heartfelt and grandly usnsettling". The reviewer also listed for further listnening: Roxy Music 4 stars For Your Pleasure 4 stars Stranded 4 stars No mention of COUNTRY LIFE ( my fav thank you) or ANYTHING after Siren. Sorry fans of Flesh and Blood,Manifesto or Avalon. Oh yes NO mention of the striking album cover of Siren ( i.e. no Jerry Hall). Just passing this little bit of info along. The review is on page 106. I will send him my thanks (for even mentioning Siren as a classic) and my dissapointment that Country Life was not included in the listening category AND that it preceeded Siren AND in my opinion a slightly better album. Of course I will mention this list so he can get better educated. Jas PS: Marlena: Los Lobos on Friday night were awesome. 2 hours of pure musical pleasure. They covered.. Are You Experienced (which segued into Down By the River!) and for an encore attempted the first few bars of Machine Gun. David Hildago said " We wish"..and then tore into Mas Y Mas. I was in heaven!! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V5 #392 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
