Not all subjects are of interest to all readers at all times - in fact, some topics are not of interest at all. Be that as it may, we all must exercise patience and tolerance, and respectfully treat every list member with civility, lest we torch the list on a pyre. I believe that new comers should invest a bit of themselves in the archives to determine the lay of the land before assuming residency here. A holder of hundreds of hours of university credits, I know research and study are imperative to a successful education - the archive is an excellent source of information on Avalon List's past discussions as well as List dynamics. Welcome everyone, but do not expect to be guided by the hand through Avalon Land. We are all pioneers. Look before you leap - why take a knife to a gun fight?. My thoughts only. Colleen is correct: "If new, old, or middle-aged list members ask for information or want to share their new found enthusiasm or provide some arcane trivia, it's all equally worthwhile in the overall vibrancy and health of the list; there's certainly room for both the Martins and the Mary Roses of the Roxy world on this list and interesting, well-reasoned, witty, and/or critical writing is always welcome. Someone may not be a complete anorak yet might have something wonderful to offer and I'd hate to see that shut down because they don't feel welcome enough because they don't know enough to "ingratiate" themselves." Give a little, get a lot. The total package is about 450 kB of attachments. I don't know if the server would cope, or if everyone individually would want all that stuff downloading into their mailboxes. I had a 14.4 modem until recently, and I know what a pain huge e-mails can be, especially when unsolicited. Here's the text, anyway, which shouldn't be too painful to receive even if you've read it already: X Guy DADDY COOL Bryan Ferry fronted the most glamorous band of the Seventies, became a style icon in the Eighties, and is now releasing a dazzling new album and embarking on his first tour for six years. He talks to Anthony Gardner. Photographs by Don Cunningham ‘Come and have a look at my car,’ says Bryan Ferry. Normally, he explains, he drives a Land-Rover, but in honour of H&Q’s shoot at the Goodwood motor-racing circuit, he has brought his black Corvette (numberplate: A7 USA). It is a 1989 model, and he points out the circular tail lights with approval: ‘The year after that, they changed the shape to oval, which doesn’ t look nearly as good.’ Then he points out that the lights have cobwebs on them. Twelve months ago, a cobwebby Corvette might have been an appropriate metaphor for Ferry himself. The Nineties were a lean period for the King of Cool — but since last November he has been on a roll, releasing a brilliant album of Thirties and Forties standards, As Time Goes By, and embarking on his first tour for six years. Intended to be a cursory round of small venues, it has snowballed to take in 60 concerts — from the Royal Albert Hall to Castle Howard; this month (sic), he and his thirteen-piece orchestra hit Moscow and St Petersburg. It is, he says, ‘like being a chef in a wonderful restaurant’. In person, he is surprisingly low-key for a man who fronted the most glamorous band of the Seventies, wrote some of the most sophisticated songs of our time, and possesses the enviable ability to excite unbridled desire in women and ungrudging respect in men. If anything, his looks have improved with age: at 56, the lines around his eyes lend him a soulful quality which makes the smooth matinée idol of the Roxy Music days look almost callow. Open and affable, he exudes a faint air of weariness, like a schoolmaster who has seen the same practical joke played year after year. ‘I’ve never worried about ageism,’ he says, ‘because my first heroes were poor old black men — either blues singers or jazz players. Also, I intended to be a painter, and you think of people in art having long careers, like Picasso.’ Despite growing up in a poor mining village near Durham, he always expected to be a success ‘of one sort or another’; but it was only after leaving art school and moving to London that he discovered his gift for songwriting. One of his stardust memories is of seeing a record-shop window on the King’s Road entirely filled with copies of the first Roxy Music album. ‘I just stood there and I thought, “This is great!” It meant a lot more to me than having a painting in an art gallery.’ Although he no longer paints, he retains an artist’s eye for detail — which, he argues, is the key to men’s clothes. The process begins at school, where small variations on the official uniform are the only means of expressing individuality: ‘How sharp can your shoes be, how tight can your trousers be, how do you tie your tie to make that distinctive you look?’ As a teenager, he had a Saturday job in a menswear shop, ‘advising people on how many buttons to put on their jackets. We used to get a lot of Teddy boys coming in, real dandies. They always liked to have bright linings on their suits, cloth buttons, and velvet collars.’ His own taste was eclectic, and influenced by the Hollywood stars he idolised, from the leather-jacketed Marlon Brando to Fred Astaire. (‘He was always immaculately dressed — more English than the English.’) Lately, Ferry has moved increasingly towards Savile Row style: he buys his suits from Anderson & Sheppard and Kilgour French Stanbury; shirts from Richard James and New & Lingwood; shoes from Cleverley. When performing, though, he prefers Armani and Gucci: ‘They’re very light fabrics and good for on stage. ’ He speaks slowly and thoughtfully, pausing for long intervals so that he appears to have finished, only to resume just as his embarrassed interviewer jumps in with the next question. As he is photographed next to an old biplane, he seems to slip into a reverie. ‘I was thinking about that American flyer, Lindbergh,’ he explains afterwards. ‘How would he have looked?’ Ferry’s image in recent years has been very much of that of the musician suffering for his art. He protests that, while he likes music to be ‘dark and beautiful rather than pink and pretty’, he himself can be ‘quite jolly — and it is true that he is in a lighthearted mood today: but when he adds, ‘It’s nice to have fun,’ it is as if he is airing a tentative and somewhat radical concept. The song which brings his audiences unfailingly to their feet is ‘Let’s Stick Together’. It seems an appropriate anthem for a star whose marriage has lasted for almost two decades, despite reports that his wife Lucy has sought counselling for problems with drink and drugs. Has having a family diluted his angst, and therefore his urge to create? He laughs wryly. ‘No, not really — I’ve had a lot of angst in the last fifteen years — as much as in the fifteen before. But I have enjoyed having that extra dimension to my life. I always thought, “Oh, I’m a career person,” so having a family was something I didn’t really expect.’ Nevertheless, his commitment to music remains absolute: he spends more time at his studio in London than he does at home with Lucy and their four sons in Sussex, and he is enjoying recording and performing more than he has done in years. ‘As Time Goes By really saved me,’ he says. ‘It got me working with clarinets, saxophones, and trumpets — and humans playing them of course — rather than doing it all on keyboards in that dead, silent way that records are made these days.’ There will be a new album in the spring, though he doesn’t yet know what form it will take: ‘I just know that I think I’m going to like it,’ he says — and he roars with delighted laughter.
