Rain, rain, rain, but it didn't matter. Friday lost to meetings and such, but escaped in time to meet up for a drink or two with fellow Avalonian Luc Morvillier, much Ferry chat and exchanges of Vinyl & CDs, before I disappeared into the Parisian night, in the direction of a small cafe... Saturday was Remake day. I was Rotterdam bound by the unearthly (for me) hour of around 9am, but my good friends from Radio 6 had furnished me with a plush first class train ticket, so all was well as I reclined, oblivious to all, as highlights from the ATGB tour(s) pumped into my head courtesy of my trusty (later, UNtrusty) MD walkman. First time in Rotterdam, wonderful Hotel (courtesy of R6 again - you know, I really like those people) and the sun was shining. A quick look around town, before meeting up with Andy Mol around 5pm. At first, I thought Andy was unwell, as it took him over 30 seconds to suggest we find a Bar. Then, on to the home of our gracious hosts, Han and Esther, who laid on a wonderful banquet for all, with suitable background music to match. Many, many thanks. The In Crowd began to arrive, Ed and Renate, Patricia, Sjaak the Roxy collector extraordinaire, and the Band, of course, and many more. On to the Gig around 10pm, where the beer flowed, and a fine time was had by all. Two exceptional moments to report to you, firstly 'A Song For Europe'. Leslie's blistering solo on this is exceptional, and is so close to Roxys sound that it is positively eerie. Secondly, an Avalonian star is born - towards the end of Jealous Guy - Ron decides to hand the Mic to Han Dorenbos in the audience, who takes it all in his stride, and does the whistling - perfectly. A great, great moment. And I have a photo to prove it. Remake/Remodel have a new drummer - I didn't catch his name, because copius amounts of Dutch Beer had been fuelled and refuelled by this point, but I can tell you his style is more than a slight nod in the direction of one Andy Newmark. Plans are afoot, as they say, to bring Remake Remodel to the UK shores for one hell of an Avalonian Party in early 2001. Keep those diaries free. It will happen. Details to follow in the next few weeks. I was invited by Ron and Mehtap for brunch on Sunday morning. Quite how I managed to get up in time for this is something of a miracle. I had spent a late night (no, early morning) cursing loudly at my MD machine in my Hotel room, as I discovered it had decided it would not record a single second of the previous nights gig. All had seemed well on the 'display', but this was not the case. Just one of those things. Oh well, next time is the best time we all know, but more of that later... to be continued... A great place, which, I was informed, Bry himself had attended. I saw a Pic, recently, of a kind of 'hall of fame' type thing, 'hands in cement' type scenario in a pavement, by Bry himself, done in 1995 - but never realised where it was. A grinning Ron showed us, it's in Rotterdam, just a few minutes walk from where we were. Of course, we all placed our hands where the maestro's had been, if you'll excuse the expression. A few minutes later, and we're outside a clothes shop called 'Outrage' in Rotterdam town Centre - and what is the Shop 'sign' ? Well, it's the Siren cover. Cool ! Seems the shop owner, Guus, is a huge Roxy fan. I took pics of both these events - the 'hands' and the Shop sign - will post them up as soon as I can. So, there you have it - Rotterdam is something of a Roxy city... All too soon I was back on the train to Paris. Monday, last full day before returning home, was one of those days where, if you are a credit card, you feel battered and bruised by the end of it. I switched Hotels, only to find some Record Shops I hadn't found before, just 2 blocks away. Oops ! Danger beckoned, naturellement. Found some great stuff by Chet Baker that I'd been looking for, reminding me of a conversation over brunch the previous day where Ron and I discovered we both thought that Chet's version of 'Everything Happens To Me' really, really should have been done by Bry on ATGB. A new discovery too, an artist I'd never known before, by the unlikely name of Marvin Pontiac - bluesy, sleazy, with a hint of Tom Waits and Dr. John type atmosphere thrown in. Marvellous stuff. No major Roxy/Bry rarities to the fore this time, though. Met up with the radio bods later and got confirmation that my next work in France is just - wait for it - 2 days before the next Remake/Remodel Gig in Rotterdam on Nov 14th. Now, if that's not tempting me to spend an extra couple of days away again, then I don't know what is ! Maybe this time I'll actually get a recording of the gig ! It's on a Tuesday - so, Dutch Avalonians, contact me offlist if you think you can make it, and we'll arrange to meet up once again. And, if there's any Avalonians who don't know about the Band yet, check them out at : http://www.geocities.com/re_make_re_model/start.html Meanwhile, we'll all try to get this big Avalonia Party arranged asap...
