In fact, most of it ended up on the black market... I believe Bob Geldof covered most of your points in a MTV 10th anniversary follow-up to Live Aid. He seemed very much humbled by the whole experience. I give him credit for trying to bring attention to the situation. If anything we had good bands to watch intead of watching Sally Struthers(All In The Family) with a bunch of starving kids in her lap with flys all over them begging for money on TV. If, however musicians understood how the political system actually works in the U.S. they would be paralized into a deep dark corner of uncertanity and confusion. Just look at the pathetic debates we recently had between the to ruling business parties. Oops cut me off...this is the Roxy board!! VIVA ROXY!!! Bye, Rockin' Rod NP. I'm afraid I still think he has. This isn't a criticism of albums like Boys and Girls, and the Your Painted Smile track from Mamouna is a real classic. But sometimes when I see Ferry live I think the spark, the clarity, the energy, the drive, the EMOTION isn't there on the record. It's mixed or produced out. Ferry says in the excellent Harpers & Queen article that ATGB "saved him". He speaks of human beings with instruments rather than the "Dead silent" studio. Too right - and too long to realise it. Someone mentioned "Will you love me tomorrow ?" and "the only face" as examples of how Ferry hasn't lost emotion from his work. To me they are A1 examples of how he has. Each to their own etc but those who have heard WYSLMT live (Jools Holland) and the only face (tour ) would have heard acoustic versions showing the real beauty of the songs and the voice in full glory. And cover v's original doesn't matter. Take I put a spell on you - hardly a note from the original - but he just needed a lyric, a start point. Rescue Me as well. He can make the music he couldn't write the lyrics - so he cleverly chose 30's songs with great lyrics to sing his own way. Each to their own (again) but really we need to remember that most who don't like ATGB prefer In Your Mind type material - Ferry's "least favourite " album and another devoid of emotion. ATGB isn't mainstream, it isn't radio friendly, it doesn't sound like his other albums, covers or not, and it's a different style of recording. Given all that it's been a massive success and confidence boost to Bryan, in the same way Taxi was probably supposed to be seven years ago.
