Tom Waits? Bob Dylan? John Lydon? > They just can't sing. It doesn't really matter whether you can sing or not if you're an exceptionally charismatic performer with wonderful songs. Mariah Carey has no charisma and appalling songs -- the range of her voice is the only thing about her that is even vaguely interesting, but even then she is not a patch on a really great *singer*, e.g. Jose Carreras. Bryan Ferry marries the virtues of exceptional charisma and great songwriting talent with a voice that is pretty decent but also very individual (i.e. he can sing and he is instantly recognisable). Morrissey possesses the same virtues, and there are others like him who are much more appropriate points of comparison with Bryan Ferry than Mariah Carey. Madonna and Nick Cave are two more that spring to mind, though I am not particularly fans of either. Comparing Bryan Ferry and Mariah Carey seems about as relevant as comparing Blur and MC Hammer. david ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" !
