Tokyo Joe's is a possibility (for obvious reasons) and Kaberet (I know the person who runs it and Bryan's a member so, again, very fitting) I have a contact to supply DVD playing facilities, and a caterer in mind if the venue doesn't provide food. Most people favour January or Feb. That would help for availability of venue as everywhere gets solidly booked out for Christmas. It also gives us all something to look forward to in the new year. Now, Reecey, having pricked my memory about a Remake/Remodel link up (which is a great idea) we'll have to look for a different type of venue altogether. So it'll bubble under. If you hear no news, don't panic. A bit like a Ferry product, just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean it's not happening. And hopefully, we'll get it out to you all faster than he normally produces new material. I'll keep you posted. Keep those off lists coming so I can get a better idea of numbers. Perhaps it was a red Mini but perhaps my faulty synapses are embellishing the text. If it was Hollywood Road in Fulham then it would have been very near the place that Ferry & Mackay lived at the time the song was written and where Roxy was dreamt up. Its lines are taken from Hollywood Babylon, said the same book. I haven't checked. But is it really a song about the owner or about the car itself (Re: make and model). As with so many of these questions, we're meant to ask but never to learn the answer. It's a simple song, just a few lines that are continually remade and remodelled. And not long afterwards, Ferry remade it on his own. Anyway, if it's an ode to a car, it sits well next to Ladytron, too - a song that could be *by* a machine. I think it was for this track that Eno was asked by Bryan to create a lunar sonic landscape. Apollo is more polished but this is more exciting. I heard a sing-along of Ladytron once in a college common room - Street Life, a Greatest Hits package from the '80s created a lot of new Roxy fans who went and bought the old material - and was disappointed to hear how many people sang "and I'll *abuse* you". Bryan Ferry often chooses to open an album by letting the world know that he definitely isn't getting that he wants. From Re-Make/Re-Model right up to More Than This, Sensation and Don't Want to Know, it's the same old song (though the tense may change), never sounding less than wonderful. Don't Want to Know perhaps caps them all but it's also the most subtle. Are there little-discussed links between Re-Make/Re-Model, Ladytron, Dream Home and Mother of Pearl.... and would that discussion get a little heated? B PS Shame on the people who put the Valentine artwork together. Detail counts, and 'remake-remodel' will never do. ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Ferry uses song titles, film titles, dialogue from movies, and stolen riffs as context, all wrapped in clever artwork. The idea is probably to place a song or a whole album in front of a complex emotional background that, by association, greatly extends the range of the work. The inclusion of these pointers and hints works best when it's not intended as just a witty aside and for the most part, the first Roxy album and the last few Ferry originals showcase that technique at its best. The film and the song share a title and a sound sample but perhaps that's all that's needed to give the song its extra resonance. There's an association, there are suggestions.. it probably *is* a subtle and open-ended thing rather than the film's plot, distilled. Two people brought together not knowing what fate has in store for them, not knowing how much time they have together. Questioning, always unknowing - and even not wanting to know any more - - are big themes of Mamouna which asks more than it answers, always with one eye on the clock. (And is there time?) Hitchcock's film uses the same ideas - not knowing which way to turn, being trapped, being chained and bound, prisoners, running out of time... There are links but no more. It's not the only reference and there's enough in common to for one to borrow from the other. Mamouna borrows heavily from cinema, with its von Sternberg-like artwork, clever Moroccan cover motifs, Garbo's being inspiration for The Only Face and others. (John Buchan's book, used as the basis for the film, was mentioned... best see the film first if you can - it simplifies a lot and can seem like a let-down if you've read the book just before you watch it.) To take any of these references too literally is probably to weaken the songs and not to strengthen them. The Only Face, for example, is still very much a Ferry ballad, whatever its Garbo inspirations and references. I'm tempting fate, of course. Bryan's now bound to mention in forthcoming interviews that he's really proud of the way his lyric for The 39 Steps follows the plot of the movie so closely and was deeply hurt when no one even mentioned it. I don't know if this is a subject already covered by the list, but for me the main link between most of the Roxy Music songs, including the ones above, is a weird feeling of "strangeness". Partly because of the lyrics, which can be explained in many ways, but also because of the odd sounds, vocals and transitions. I used to think of "Dream home" as a very boring, slow-paced song with just perverted lyrics (a plastic doll?), but now it's getting better all the time: it fits in the Roxy Music Universe, where there are mysterious men in white suits walking down dark, empty streets and nothing is what it's supposed to be. Maybe the link between the songs is the mystery? Bryan Ferry obviously knows something the listener doesn't know... On the ohter hand, the link might be that they're all located on plastic shiny discs around the globe. Mrtn PS Does anyone know what the video-clips on the "Valentine" album are supposed to be? Indeed! It is that very strangeness that has drawn lots of fans to Roxy Music over the years, from the London punks, to well, me! It helps when you're strange yourself... An elegant, beautiful articulation of my own pathos and feelings of discomfort is much more my cup of tea than the abrasive whine-wave angst rock that bands like Korn glut the market and gets shoved down American and everywhere else's(because I've noticed that American media's like this inky black octopus with strangly tentacles) throats.
