Roxy played the first of their three sell out shows at Glasgow Apollo on the 8th. I would come in from school (was it that long ago)? and play the tape over and over again so as I would know the songs from that album. Incidentally, Phil said during the Peel interview that "Just another high" was originally to be called, "(Maybe) just another high," but BF changed his mind, for some reason. I must admit this is one of my least favourite Roxy songs, I don't like the intro and the production is far too tinny, although I think "She Sells" is probably my second favourite song on that album and a fine Roxy toon (BF should definitely have written more songs with EJ). Before anyone asks, no I do not have the Peel tape, it was chewed up many moons ago, sorry. The Univ. of Strathclyde have a spectacular vunue on the shores of Loch Lomond, which can provide DBB(en-suite) at a reasonable rate and can also 'do' conferences, what say we investigate the openings for Jan 2001( quieter and cheaper flights for those inclined to venture north)? We could have, say an afternoon of 'new' videos followed by dinner and a 'disco' of BF/RM tapes provided by us. (There is an all-day bar, extensive grounds, 12 hole golf course and local amenities). It is also relatively near to where Jim Lawn lives and I'm sure he'd be interested in attending. What do you think? I can't remember listening to my father's copy back then (earliest Roxy-related memory: the slightly damaged record label of the domestic copy of Manifesto in 1979), haha, but I have to say I think it an excellent album, though all of the four predecessors are even better, in my opinion. Bryan once stated in an interview that it was recorded on 16-track (the first four were on 24-track). This must appear very strange to him nowadays... Anyway, I like Siren for its clear sound and especially for Ferrys very mature singing - the way he has built the vocals on this one is simply astonishing. Favurite tracks? I'd say Both Ends Burning, Just Another High, End Of The Line (a very personal one for me), well, too many too mention anyway. But the reception of She Sells makes me wonder a bit - it's not one of my favourites, but I still enjoy it. B-side digression: imagine Sultanesque had been released by a Krautrock band or any other avant-whatever group - wouldn't the English press heap glorious praise on it? Hmm...I don't think it's all that close, to be honest. I know what you mean though - the short, funky clavinet section in 'She Sells' is not dissimilar. But then this was 1975 and disco was making its presence felt (no Zep pun intended) all over the place. In any case, although Paul had probably heard it ('Physical Graffiti' was released in February 1975, a few months before 'Siren' was recorded) I don't suppose it was a big hit (or influence) with either Bryan or Eddie Jobson. By the way, does anyone else hear what sounds like an old-fashioned telephone ringing in amongst the cymbal crashes on 'Just Another High' ? S8^) I know it's only an artefact of the trebly production on the track, but it's been a distraction of mine since the album first came out.
