I love his Mamouna compositions and rate them very high, but I think it has been discussed several weeks ago that a return to all those dream homes and mother of pearls appears unlikely. Ferry seems to question his work so intensely that it gets increasingly difficult to come to an end. In this respect he's turned out to be quite the antithesis of Eno's way of working. I wouldn't mind Ferry putting out a very diversified album (like TBSB for example) with many different collaborators. But I would tend to suggest he'd return to some kind of core band some time - perhaps BF on vox & piano, one or twoguitarists, bass and drums - and that would be it. Probably he should finish the songs before taking them to a recording studio. Or, another possibility (I've mentioned this one before): a solo solo album - the man on vocals and piano. I'm sure he'd consider this an interesting idea, but still he would never do it. It's really a pity, because there are other artists like Peter Hammill for example who put out an album a year (at least!). But Hammill is very autonomous, and I assume Ferry is not. Let's hope for the best Christian P.S.: Bryan, what was the party round William "son of Maggie" H*g*e's place like? Did Andrew Lloyd W**ber also attend???? The BBC expects to launch the first of these, a black music and news station, next year. The BBC's radio archive of concerts and music interviews will be raided to develop a station focussing on the music that helped shape contemporary popular culture. Digital radio has yet to capture the imagination of the public but 30% of the population are predicted to have access by 2006. The five stations are: A black music and news station aimed at young people A popular culture music station based around the BBC's radio archive, with music from performers including Neil Young, Roxy Music, REM, Radiohead and Van Morrison A speech service offering drama and comedy for adults and children A live sports station, 5 Live Sports+, extending coverage offered by Radio 5 Live and Radio 4. A national Asian network serving Asian communities with speech and music, based on the existing Asian Network operation in the Midlands The stations will be available via digital radio sets, which remain expensive, digital satellite and cable and the internet. The BBC's World Service will also be broadcast using these platforms. Jenny Abramsky, Director of BBC Radio and Music, said: "The digital future is as important for radio as it is for television. "All five services will build on the BBC's commitment to live performance, original programming and the championing of talent." The BBC has recorded some of the key concerts from bands such as The Beatles and the Rolling Stones and influential performers such as David Bowie. Ms Abramsky said the black music station would be aimed at young people. "It will feature R'n'B, hip hop and newer genres like UK garage. "We want to champion UK-produced black music like UK garage in the way that The Dreem Teem are doing on Radio 1 on Sunday mornings." Development of the new station will be headed by Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt. Radio 2 boss Jim Moir will look after the popular culture station, while his Radio 4 counterpart Helen Boaden will lead the speech service. ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Personally imposed perfectionism further binds efforts to produce material, the inability to move forward is disabled by retentiveness that drives work toward an unobtainable ideal; perfection. Criticism, internal and external, heighten self-consciousness choking the artist's vitality. But how to extricate oneself from the chains that bound creativity. Mr. Ferry might benefit a read and practice of Dorthea Brande's "Becoming a Writer". First published in 1934, this timeless book is about the creative process - allowing the writer's resident genius to freely express its side. Perhaps BF's baggage should get lost. But, how might the loss rob him of the personal anguish he seems to have drawn from? My advice is, Mr. Ferry stay true to yourself. Best wishes, all ways. An appreciative audience must surely give a singer the greatest satisfaction and I really do believe that Bryan (as an individual) has been appreciated on this tour more than any other. I hope he keeps playing the occasional show between sessions just to keep fresh and as a reminder of how much people like ourselves cherish his output. After all he craves public acceptance. And even if he never makes another great album, well, there you go. He's done us proud already. Anything else is a bonus. ...on another point. We would have been even more doubtful of Ferrys' writing ability at the beginning of 1994 and yet he proved us all wrong on that occasion. But you're right Chris all the signs are there. It was almost a no go leading up to going as time was neat to get visa's etc but Jocelyn and I got them by the skin of our teeth, but getting my visa from Jocelyn proved equally as difficult as we only found each other as the last boarding was called. They say that there is no such thing as a free lunch, but we had half a dozen liquid ones on the plane. The flight attendants swallowed the old 'nervous flyers' routine and we swallowed half the bar stock. Met at the airport by Anthea from Bryan's management and chauffeur the journey from the airport to the hotel was reminiscent of Bryan making an album, it seemed to take forever. A quick change into some fresh kit and off to the Kremlin. We entered through the stage door, and into a frenzy of behind the scenes activity. Ironically it was harder to get to our seats from there when it is usually the other way round. The hall looked somewhere between a glorified school hall and a holiday camp stage. Seated in a different position from usual, towards the back this time, we sat surveying the Moscowvites in their elegant splendour as we waited for the kick off. Some guy came on and in Russian he intimated thet there was a problem which delayed the start of the show by 20 minutes. The set strolled through the familiar formation of Harp Solo, String Quartet, Big Band tune, The Way You Look Tonight etc. The crowd at the front, who were obviously a 'those and such as those' crowd invited by the many high profile sponsors, clapped politely between each song but showed no signs of willingness to join in the euphoria that was hinted by a crowd of young locals in what Bryan referred to as The Cheap Seats. By half time it was decided that a tactical change was indeed required. Coached by some of the Ferry management team Jocelyn and I changed position forward to the front of the stage which was 10 Metres from the nearest tables. 3 of us danced in front of the band with the girls in the string section signalling their relief to us. I looked around expecting to see some people make their way forward and I felt a wee bit embarrassed when no one seemed to be making a move, then I turned around to see the show again and realised I had the whole band and dance floor to myself. It was so surreal. Then after a couple of songs the young crowd from the cheap seats flooded the floor and the whole show just turned around. The exuberance from the audience bounced onto the band and back to the audience to make a fine last half hour to the show. As they say in football it was a game of two halves. Wandering around the changing room area backstage gave an insight to the not so glamorous world of the world tour as the road crew had so much to deal with. Back to the hotel in the band bus was such a scream with the mad antics of the band and some alternative lyrics to some of the songs. I can never listen to Slave To Love now without hearing the other lyrics in my head now, ..........and no I wont repeat them. Sitting around the hotel reception quenching ones thirst was a strange experience too. Mr. F watching the olympics on the big screen as the band sampled some of the local Vodka. Bryan and the band left on Saturday and myself Jocelyn and Jim Lawn put on our tourist pose and wandered aimlessly around Moscow enjoying the city and delighting in the rather warm sunshine. A trip down the Moscow (Thames, Tyne, Clyde, Seine or whatever) in a pleasure boat was a nice way to see the city in such a short time and then back to the hotel after 3 hours of sailing. You know when you are in a classy hotel when the price in pounds for a bottle of wine is a bigger number than the year of it's vintage. After a few whisky's I decided I was going to audition as the pianist for the next tour. The bar by this time was just the 3 of us so I treated Jocelyn and Jim to Dreamhome meets Richard Clayderman and a few others from the Bryan Ferry Songbook. Spent most of Sunday travelling and a delayed plane from Moscow meant I missed my connection to Glasgow and with a bit of re organising flights I eventually got home at around 3 million O'Clock when I realised that between Bryan, the band, the road crew, management and fans, I was probably the last one to get home from the last show of the longest tour Bryan has done to date. The weekend was made especially wonderful by the excellent attention given to us by the management team and Anthea kept mentioning proudly to everyone that we had travelled all the way from Scotland and England for the show. My bank manager is now surfing the net constantly in the hope Bryan doesn't tour for another 5 years Regards John O'Brien ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Uh, gentlemen... I'm sorry I can't get it quite right: was the Moscow concert GOOD or wasn't it? You prefer long reviews but I have much troubles understanding them. Please, try more minimalistic approach. Noone seen him in St.Petersburg? Our Philarmonic Hall couldn't be easily turned into a restaurant. It would have been a pleasure to see the venue all upset like that. One last question: out there from where you are from do mafia-guys eat in museums? It becomes a tradition in our country - our mafia or high-level authorities pay much and then they can eat in, say, a throne-room. I know it cause I'm working for a museum. It's cool, I guess. Anyway, he's an avant-guard Polish composer, a classical one: uses symphonic orchestra and all that. Not like Cage, no clowning and no electronic stuff as far as I know. He's a conductor also. I'm not an expert in him. The CDs I guess are widely available anywhere. Shame on pirates, there are no pirate CDs of him in Russia. I guess, he is not popular. Also if anyone knows about Schulze-oriented mailing list, please, let me know.
