Long post First, my compliments to Maria, your English is first rate and far more extensive than our Russian which is limited to the polite and the profane (good title for a B-side). I was very, very interested to hear a true Russian point of view of the concert prior to posting to see how our interpretations of the concert would compare. OK, where does this adventure begin? After a bit of a dodgy start at the airport, convinced that John O'Brien had missed his connecting flight from Glasgow and me with his passport and visa we made it at a gallop through last call to settle back into the faux leather BA seats to enjoy a morning reviver. After nearly 4 hours of wonderfully attentive service (yes, we pulled the old nervous flyers routine) we arrived at Moscow to be met by Anthea and Igor. Whisked at a snail's pace into the heart of downtown Moscow (is there an uptown?), we had no time to check into our own hotel so got ready at Ferry HQ before leaving for the Kremlin. Thankfully we were with people who knew Russian protocol and had advised us to bring our passports with us. A ticket for a concert is just not good enough, it will get you to the front gate and no further. Then into the concert hall. What a surreal scenario. I half expected Jonathan Ross to come out and start announcing the nominations for the TV Times comedy actor of the year. Each table set up with bottles of Martini and Martini Asti, and a delicate plate of arranged fruit, with a raised area on either side designated as "the cheap seats" as Mr F put it. A crowd of very moneyed, very scrubbed up and generally very beautiful modelly Muscovites nibbled their nectarines and each other, oblivious to the fact that Julia was treating them to her harp opener. And it got little better when Ferry eventually took the stage. Sat at a distance with Anthea and Jim by the mixing desk our endeavours to whip up a bit of enthusiasm was literally falling on deaf ears. And to play to an audience who patently couldn't give a fig(to continue the fruit theme) must be the most difficult mission on earth. Something had to be done. By half time we had had enough and Bryan had had enough. The call came. Bryan has requested the pleasure of your company at the front... now please... if not sooner. As Sunset disappeared over a pink horizon and ever willing to brave the wrath of security (with or without kalashnikovs)John, Jim and I picked up our martinis, sauntered off to the front and took up our positions right in front of the through-the-nose paying Moscow Mafioso, who were only slightly less amazed at our audacity than the band. Now the party could really begin. We were the ones encouraging you Maria to break down the barriers and storm the front, but during those halcyon moments of Slave to Love, Oh Yea etc when it was just the band, some geezer in leather trousers and we three at the front we realized this was the closest we'd ever get to a private concert in our living rooms. The rest of the concert then turned into something more like the summer gigs with everyone having a ball. No Hard Rain, but as the band ripped into Virginia Plain the cheap seaters (real fans) burst forth with floral gifts and a bizarre phonetically sing along. Do the Strand was not on the set list, but Bryan, obviously now warmed up (rather like his undrinkable champagne but that's another story), couldn't resist the opportunity to be Nijinski in situ. I thanked my personal stony faced bouncer for all his help and complimented him on his slender frame and becoming demeanour (there is a translation but I think that's best left unread) and then off backstage for yummy warm beer and an elusive search for ice ( I think someone suggested Siberia) Back to the hotel on the tour bus to be treated to an impromptu fugue then long discussions into the night. The girls and in particular Lucy T were exceptionally friendly. Lucy commandeered my camera and ran off a film. I have no idea what's on it but will find out later today. And that was just day one. John O'B treated us all to his unplugged piano versions of Ferry classics in the hotel bar, and Jim and I wondered if we could order the bottle of 1906 Georgian red at around £1,000 and do a runner. Moscow was swathed in vibrant sunshine throughout and delivered up one of the most enjoyable weekends I've ever experienced. Thanks to all concerned for making it happen, and for good food, good wine and good company - oh, and a concert. As I said to John, Roxy/ferry concerts worldwide used to be the reason, today they're the excuse. I know he has been demoing some interesting cover stuff. My concerns are: He seems to record in bursts, with each session insufficient in itself to be an album. This creates eclecticism, not in itself a bad thing in my view, but at odds with Ferry's policy of 'building' an album. There is a preponderance of cover material. Yeah, some good points here. (And thanks for clearing up the collaborators.) Whilst Avalon, B&G and Mamouna are clearly examples of album "builds", I'd place Bride, Bete and, possibly, Taxi as examples of the eclectic tendency. ATGB is virtually a live album and probably can't be classified otherwise. Sometimes he's used other people to waken his seemingly dormant muse. Johnny Marr comes to mind, possibly Colin Good, maybe even Eno on Mamouna. The strangest name there, for me, is Chris Difford. Much as I love Squeeze I find their kitchen sink operettas at odds with Ferry's pashmina-swathed worldview. As for his creative process I think he'd be the first to admit that there's little rhyme or reason these days. As he stumbles through the dark, starry-eyed, a vision rushes in ...sometimes.
