Watched 'The Filth and the Fury' last night, Julian Temple directed biog of the Sex Pistols. Imagine my shock to see a lengthy shot of RM doing (from memory sorry if I'm wrong) 'Virginia Plain' with (I think) Steve Jones saying how he thought rock musicians fell from the sky and how he liked RM among others. Just goes to show you doesn't it? Not surprisingly Malcolm McLaren and Nancy Spungen don't come out of it too well. Radio stations & their formats are so tightly > controlled anymore. You can tell who's got a CD coming out by the airplay of > the artist's older music. Anyone else care to speculate? I didn´t think that Bryan would get much airplay on swedish radio for any reasons nowadays, however there are apparently exceptions: About a week or two ago I was taking an evening drive, listening to my car radio. There was some kind of documentary going but I didn´t listen very intensely. Suddenly I heard "Bitters End". This was quite a surprise, because I would figure that song isn´t broadcast more than once every five years in Sweden. Of course I had to listen to the rest of the programme. It was titled "Ode to the Dandy" and the lifestyle and art of Bryan Ferry was used as a kind of illustration to "dandyism" (does that term exist?). There were short cut-outs from interviews with Bryan, taken from the Swedish Radio archives (one of them from 1985). He talks about seeing La Bohême at the age of ten and getting interested in the bohemian lifestyle. Roxy/Ferry songs were used as sound illustrations throughout the programme (Your Painted Smile, Avalon and even one of those early single B-sides among others). The swedish painter Nils Dardel was also mentioned. He painted the famous "The dying Dandy" in 1918. He seems to have lived the life of a dandy up until that point. So, would you consider Ferry the ultimate dandy? I´m not quite sure myself, because I would put selfdestruction as a typical dandy behaviour, and I´d say that Bryan hasn´t been in to that for the last 22 years or has he? By the way, the guy who put together the programme was called Jesper Tillberg. He must be a true Roxy fan to be able to choose songs and interviews the way he did. Maybe he should be on the list? Does anyone know him? A lot of the original "punks" were roxy fans, Siouxie Sue has gone on record many times about her love of the group, the "bromley? set" used to meet at roxy gigs & Joe Strummer has recorded a version of VP , although I await Extreme Noise Terror's version of "End of the Line"!
