It was on way past my bedtime, so I taped it and watched it over breakfast this morning, and quite frankly it disappointing, incorrect twoddle. Basically, it was a short (10 min) film as part of a series called "Pioneers" about musical innovators. This film traced Eno's invention of ambient music, and his influence. Unfortunately they chose several brain dead dance "artists" to talk crap, alongside David Byrne, Bono, The Edge and David Toop. And even David Toop was full of crap. There were snippets of Eno talking, but not much. And the only other Roxy member mentioned was Phil. Ah well. Better luck next time. I'll point the incorrect info once I've had time to confirm it. At least two album titles were wrong. If you fly out for the concert and come back on the next available flight (2 days later) it costs over £1,000!!! I've got a feeling it's going to end up prohibitively expensive for everyone, British and Russian alike. If you e-mail me off list Therese I've got hotel and flight details if you're interested. Ferry does bring class to "rock" music but in the sense of style more than anything else. Understanding the class system of this country, again, is not an easy one to explain. Ferry started as the son of a farmer in quite humble origins (so therefore working class) and now has married in to the landed gentry of the upper classes. So what does that make him and what effect has that had on his music or who it's aimed at? Many people here on Avalon will have a view of that and may like to join in with their comments. As for him being an unusual kind of punk - never mention punk infront of him. Punk sunk Sign of the Times and The Bride Stripped Bare without trace. But he did look a bit like a punk at the beginning of the tour with his new chopped haircut! I do think though that Ferry playing infront of an audience of diplomats is quite fitting (he played in Oslo at the Nobel Night), although grossly unfair to the real Russian fan who wouldn't be able to afford a ticket. Hope you have some luck in somehow getting a ticket at a sensible price as I really would recommend you see him in concert if you can. He is on superb form. Maybe they'll record Bryan for broadcast. Let's hope so. Can you, please, tell me more about that album? My Life In The Bush of Ghosts is a funky mixture of sub-Saharan Arabic influenced music overlaid with a variety of taped voices from obscure sources. A lot of it is very dancey and found its way onto many a dance floor in London club land when it was released. My particular favourite tracks are Regiment and the disturbing Jezebel Spirit which features an excerpt from a real exorcism. Check it out if you can. >BTW do Mr Ferry and Mr Eno hate each other? Ferry and Eno now occasionally work together again (see Mamouna) so any bad feeling seems to have been lost through time. In recent years I seem to have noticed that in general many concerts have gotten more and more expensive. Bryan Ferry's concerts are no exception, sadly. But this brings to my mind whether Ferry is actually aiming at an audience that is able to rattle their jewellery? He does not deny his working class roots at all, which I find very likeable. But from some of his interviews I seem to have gathered that he is quite conservative in some respects. In the MOJO 1999 interview he stated that he supposes he's being perceived as an arch tory. Well, I find him hard to assess in this point, myself being no conservative at all. We shouldn't forget that Ferry, along with Roxy, helped to popularise androgynity together with Bowie and Reed in the 70's, which I find quite progressive (so the standard pop star now does not have to be a "lad" like Liam or Noel take themselves to be). And I guess he's very English, but with an openness to different cultures. Does anyone know more about Ferry and politics? Hope nothing disappointing comes up ("Ferry loved trading tennis socks with John Major" or so)... Avalonians of all lands unite...
