I'm about half we through it. It's pretty good so far, especially Virginia Plain. The only one I don't like so far Chance Meeting. If anyone else has listened to this new CD can you tell me if this version was released on another album. Again, I'm used to the version on LST. I'll see what the rest of it is like over the next day or so. Anyone else listened to it yet? Firstly, I assume that the letters S H I T on the Musikladen recordings from Bremen (MY hometown! This is where I live, yes!) don't mean anything in particular - of course they don't refer to Roxy. In the sixties, the Musikladen had been the Beat Club, which was, I think (or so my father has told me) one of the most progressive music shows on German TV. Actually, Radio Bremen is at least partly still at the forefront of relatively progressive cultural radio politics (i. e. the rest is even worse). Concerning the More Than This issue: may I proudly announce that I possess a copy on vinyl (2 LP of course)? So it does exist. I wonder if ATGB has been released on vinyl? Concerning the Country Life issue: I think the head and shoulders cover refers to a censored edition of the sleeve showing only... head and shoulders (though I have only the Canadian "censored edition", which really makes me laugh). The German translation was done by he cover girls after Bryan had written the lyric, I think. His singing in German is at least superior to Thom Yorke's attempt on Bitter-Sweet on the VG soundtrack (although TY is a brillant vocalist). And, returning to an "older" topic: I would like to express my absolute admiration for Stricly Confidential. I think it's one of the best Roxy/Ferry songs and, together with IEDHAH surely (for me) the best track on this album of albums (the best album in pop history, to me). And one last remark: I'm surprised that so many of you prefer the LST version of Casanova to the almost menacing effort on Country Life. Both versions are very good, but I rate the Roxy effort a bit higher (maybe it's got to do with the sleeve of LST, haha). I think my natural Libran tendencies come out here - balancing one against the other, and wavering this way and that! Now, Country Life is one of my all-time favourite albums (still can't get to grips with Tryptych though), and one of the things that really made me take notice of Roxy in the early 70s was the saxophone and guitar playing - and both are strong on the CL version of Casanova. But, I admit I'm a Ferry fan first and foremost and, as much as I love RM's stuff, it is still essentially Ferry. He wrote most of it on his own after all. The Let's Stick Together version of Casanova is more subtle, and yet simpler to listen to - if that's not a contradiction! And it is closer to the live versions on the recent tour - one of the highlights for me (especially, in my opinion, the performance at Ragley Hall). So, it's pretty much a case of what mood I'm in. Both versions are good, but I think my vote goes to the LST version! Best wishes Jane PS Congratulations on finding the Early Years CD - in the cultural desert that I inhabit I'm still looking! I'm up in London tomorrow so will presumably find a copy there.... - ----- Original Message ----- From: Tracy Connell To: Sent: Wednesday, August 30, 2000 11:45 PM Subject: Re: [AVALON] Casanova > Hi Simon and Julia, > > Thanks for the replies. > > Simon, I always thought the LST version of Casanova was more powerful. Menace, sleaze, cleverness, sadness, despair, introspection, contradiction - they're all in Casanova. If he could still write lyrics like that there would have been no 5 year silences And the pounding bass of the LST version puts it well ahead of the rather dense (no PULSE) version on Country Life. And it's yet another Ferry song that lasts under 3 minutes (on LST) but could have gone one for 10 and not been too long. The best moments in a spectacularly good tour - especially as Casanova kicks in at about song six after few slower numbers usually. IMHO of course ! Once again this may not be news to some of you but indulge me. I was watching Ian McKellen's version of 'Richard III' tonight which is done in a 1930s style and parallels Richard's rise with that of Hitler's. Anyway about 5 minutes into the film there is a dancehall scene with a singer and a band. I was watching intently when a fmiliar looking figure stepped out form behind the female singer - was I mistaken as I fell off my sofa? No! It was definitely Colin Good swinging the conductor's baton. Looking well I must say. I checked out the credits and although his appearance is not namechecked, he is listed as one of the arrangers of the music on the soundtrack. So there - whaddya think of that? Cale allegedly offered Bryan to produce the album, but the latter politely (can you think of something else?) declined, because Cale wanted to record it in the states. I have only read about this, having witnessed nothing, having been still uncreated back then. Best Cale albums (personal choice): Music For A New Society and Paris 1919. So I think a collaboration with Ferry is highly unlikely, as rumours had it that when Cale and Eno recorded what was to become their whimsical Wrong Way Up LP, the personal "atmo" was very difficult. And I guess Eno is not too complicate to work with (his name is not Scott, haha), so presumably Cale knows what he wants, and Bryan... well, you all know. A person that comes to my mind when thinking of artists Bryan should work with is Robert Fripp. His wonderful soundscapes are so unbelievably breathtaking that it could really add something to Ferry's material. In addition to that, may I comment on some of the recent topics: Strictly Confidential MUST be praised - PRAISE! PRAISE! Together with IEDHAH it's the best song on FYP, to me, at any rate. Casanova - I prefer Roxy's version, but like both. Only: The CL version has something menacing which I find very attractive. In their different ways the two versions each possess a more subliminal, dark tone. It shimmers through the surface. And is it really about Eno? I didn't know. I thought Sultanesque was about Eno. Just kidding. But looking closer at that track, it's not so far removed from Another Green World objects. Don't you think? Easing out of time... To take off on your above thought I don't think it will ever happen. Although, it would be a wonderful mix of a trully brilliant guitarist with a incredible artist. So, the closest we have to that is an album by No-Man - Flowermouth. Fripp plays guitar, lead guitar and frippertronics on 6 tracks. I would think most Avalonian's would like this album, if I may be to bold to say. If you are not familiar with it I can elaborate. It is the work of a creative genious named Steven Wilson. He reminds of Eno in a way. He's quite prolific. Presently, he's running under the guise of about 4 different names/bands. Also, the stuff he does under Bass Communion name is very similiar to Eno's non-vocal stuff from the 70's yet still relevent today. Also, to chime in on John Cale I very much love Paris 1919 and the issuance of the 2CD(36 track, 20 page booklet) set called "The Island Years" is excellent and an absolute must for all intersted Cale newbies. It includes 3 albums(Fear, Slow Dazzle and Helen of Troy) plus about 4-5 bonus tracks. A must!!!! Plus it includes Manzanera , eno , McKay......:) Anyways, I can take this rambling off-list if you are interested in further exploration.
