However I feel increasingly uncomfortable being part of something which is so often spoilt by a tiny number of people pursuing their own agenda, making claims about this list that are out of all proportion to its importance and indulging in personal attacks. It's remarkable how these people will engage in attacks of this kind from the privacy and comfort of their homes but have nothing whatsoever to say when their paths cross with their 'victims'. As such I'm unsubscribing from today. I can almost hear the cries of "good riddance" in certain quarters but I really couldn't care less and am happy to take my chances when it comes to tickets etc. with everyone else outside the mailing list. Frankly, I'd rather be on Row W than Row A rubbing shoulders with certain members of this list. On the other hand there will be plenty of people I'll be more than happy to meet up with - it's been a pleasure getting to meet so many generous, warm and enthusiastic fans - I won't name them lest I forget someone but they know who they are. I hope everyone sticks with Bryan and enjoys the music to come. As for this list I'm increasingly of the opinion that the sooner someone gets around to shutting it down (as they undoubtedly will) the better. Richard It's a sad day for this forum when a respected member becomes so disenchanted that he feels it necessary to uns*bscribe from the list. Richard has never been anything but positive about this list, or the Man and his music. Unlike most here, he has given more than he has taken. What have we become? Anyway, back to your precious agendas. Yours, also deeply disenchanted. I met Richard (and his sister) briefly at Castle Howard for the first time and it's a shame to think that he'll no longer subscribing to the list. I discovered the list at the beginning of May and was really encouraged to find so many other people sharing my interest in RM/BF. For the most part it's been fun, amusing, friendly and - most importantly - informative. I hope it will continue to be so. Of course people have differences of opinion - that's what makes life so interesting after all. But please, it's been a great year for Ferry fans. Don't let's lose sight of that. I fully appreciate that I've joined the list when there's a lot to comment on, but I'm sure the end of the current (UK) tour doesn't mean the end of constructive discussion. Can a (relative) newcomer make a plea for a return to our main topic and avoid any further disillusioned and disenchanted members? I went to 5 concerts - 2 indoors (Royal Festivall Hall and Royal Albert Hall) and three outdoors (Petworth, Ragley Hall and Castle Howard). To think that after RFH in December I thought I might never see Ferry in concert again! Best performance? I think Ragley Hall - the overall performance of Ferry and the Band was at its peak, with Ferry's control of the crowd just brilliant. Best moments for me have been: 1. Hearing the "tour version" of "The Only Face" for the first time - definitely a spine-tingler. Especially enjoyed it at the Albert Hall, made even more poignant by Bryan's dedications to Lucy and the kiddies. 2. Bryan walking back on stage for the second half at Petworth, resplendent in white tux. 3. The now famous "shades" incident at Castle Howard! 4. The introduction into the set of V Plain at Petworth (it had been hinted at, but still came as a welcome surprise). Plus many, many more! And Castle Howard was special because I met so many others from this list for the first time. Before the RFH concert I was apprehensive - could Ferry still perform live? Before Petworth I was concerned that the gigs wouldn't work outside. All fears totally unfounded, I'm glad to say. What a tour! Here's to the next one... The deciding factor of going to all but one of the outdoor gigs (I missed one due to work - damn !) was the 'Avalonia' factor. Same goes for Antwerp, Brussels, Paris, The Hague. Time, spent well, is so rare. >> This sums up my main attraction to the Avalon Mailing List. I have made so many friends since joining this list. For various personal reasons I haven't found the time to post as much as I did when I initially joined this list 18 months ago. This was, is, and can continue to be a fun place to be. But, the fabric appears to be disintegrating as the weave of friendship is slowly being eroded by the public personal attacks between list members. The ' who's right ' and ' who's wrong ' of these discussions is not an issue for me. There must be more suitable forums for this kind of angst that we have consistently been subjected to. There is nothing wrong in agreeing, disagreeing, debating and arguing over Bryan's music, that is what part of this discussion groups existence is for. Personal attacks on individuals is not what we should be subjected to publicly. I am saddened by some of the attacks, rightly or wrongly, on some of friends I have met through the list and any other attacks that I quickly delete after the first phrase of malice. The victims of these attacks use the right to defend themselves in public when they have been attacked in public. I am writing this post on behalf of the Avalon Mailing List, which Johnny sums up perfectly, to appeal for a more ordered arena to discuss our passion. I am just as impressed with a 16 year old posting to this list saying they have just heard For Your Pleasure and want to know more about this band as I am with the die hards who have more Roxy records than Bryan Ferry has etc. I am not impressed by the exhibition of one-upmanship law court type dissecting of verbal evidence. I think I may speak for the majority of people on this list on that one. As Martin had pointed out that there are always new, interesting and informed people joining this list. This would diminish with our current behaviour. Bryan's rate of output is a lot slower than we would like it to be therefore we have nothing better to do than talk about past and potential future releases, etc. in the interim. This is what has made this such a vibrant community. Can we put all the personal stuff to bed no matter who has the last word or appears to be ahead and put the Avalon Mailing List back to centre stage. Are any of the negative aspects that are currently filtering through bigger than the overall camaraderie of this mailing list? I don't think so. Let's clear the air. Come on come on Let's Stick Together. Your post was a breath of fresh air in all the wrangling. I still find it very funny when Bryan put Andrew's sunglasses on - that was great - it still makes me laugh now. Hope you get them back Andrew. Hopefully your post will enourage everyone to return to 'our regular sheduled programme'. Also, if anyone has the new Early Years CD (I forgot to look for it today) maybe we could have an expert view of it. I've only recently been catching up on the Roxy stuff which I missed over the years and am only beginning to discover different versions and different cuts of the same songs. I would be interested to know of any changes that have been made to the songs on this new CD. I was also curious, after speaking to Reecey at the Castle Howard gig about Casanova, about which version people prefer - the one on the Let's Stick Together Album, or the one on Country Life. Personally I prefer the one on Let's Stick Together, but maybe that's because it's the first version I heard. How about everyone else? Please keep smiling everyone! :-) Tracy. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I've been in his company at three of ATGB shows since december and have always found him very good company. I'll be keeping in touch with him and hope that sometime in the future he will reconsider and rejoin the mailing list. Cheers, Tom. ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! I was told that 'Dream Home' had been 'snipped' a bit - yet to check it out. Besides, I'm still annoyed that Grey Lagoons has been overlooked - again ! As for 'Casanova' - for me it's got to be Roxy - but then again I'm part of the 'Roxy school' if you know what I mean. I'll admit my bias ! The version on LST is fine - but I prefer that version 'live', it seems to come to life a lot more then, as on the recent/current tour (best 'live' version I've heard of it - the swirling strings work absolute wonders on this one). Funnily enough - I do prefer the Ferry remake of 2HB to the original - much 'clearer' - a heinous crime for a Roxy fan such as I to admit ! Chance Meeting I'm unsure of - they are both quite different. Mind you, his solo version of Remake Remodel is truly appalling, no, make that cringeworthy, and goes into the Cry Cry Cry school of 'why for Chrissake' ? The backing singers on that don't help. Personal opinions abound, of course. 'Prince of Happiness' - as far as I know, Numans label (Eagle) tend to go for the same release dates worldwide, or at least, they have in the past. (I take it you are in the USA ?) Last I heard was a scheduled release date of October 9th, but I don't know if that's set in stone. If it helps - here's the future scheduled Catalogue number for it : EAGCD078 And - you didn't get that info from me, ok ! Forgot to mention - another 'laugh out loud' moment from my list of 'the best of everything' - Enrico and Julia's antics during Virginia Plain. Really made me smile. I'll say goodnight to you all, and will check in first thing in the morning, just to see if either another World War has broken out, or if some major argument happened during the night and I happen to be the only person left on the list. Then I can have a damn good shouting match with myself about the merits of cover versions vs. original material. I point blank refuse to argue with myself or start yet another bloody thread about Jerry Hall though, or I'll unsubscribe from myself.
