He didn't speak about packing up the Info-Service and I wouldn't have been too interested anyway - I always wondered if it still exists. However, I wish I could somehow understand all this hazzle in the background - it's very sad as I really enjoyed being at CH and was very happy to meet so many people. You know Andy Mackay plays on one or two tracks, also Bernard Butler who is pretty good, and obviously hugely influenced by the "glam" sound (if there was such a thing). Maybe you also know that the emphasis on Roxy and Eno largely came about because Bowie refused to allow any of his own music to be included. He is reportedly hoping to do a Ziggy Stardust movie and didn't want VG to steal his thunder. Though VG wasn't a huge success, at least it got some Eno/Roxy stuff back in the public gaze and showed that some contemporary popsters were willing to "stand up and be counted" as fans. So, a good decision by Bowie ! Also the movie must have led pretty directly to Barney Hoskyns' book on Glam getting published, and that is also a good thing, IMHO, as it puts the Roxy contribution in its proper context among the Gary Glitters of this world. - ----- Original Message ----- From: Therese O'Donnell To: Sent: Saturday, August 26, 2000 10:04 PM Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy and the movies > I'm still mulling over my thoughts on a RM reunion - it's a toughie. Thanks for the warm welcome! I am quite glad to see that "Mamouna" receives at least some of the praise it deserves. Yet I can understand those wanting Bryan to move into an "angrier" direction to some extent. But I feel that melancholy is something that fits him so well, and I am NEVER fed up with that. In fact, to me, melancholy has been one of the major characteristics of Ferry's and Roxy's work from the outset - only in earlier days I think there is more of a melancholy/irony dualism. When one considers that Ferry's singing style has undergone a development while retaining classic hallmarks - think of the phrasing (e. g. the stress put on the beginning of a syllable) or this strong vibrato -, I believe that his vocals nowadays fit the music very well. It has moved away from the Sprechgesang orientation, and just listen to "This Love" from the 149th compilation when he sings "This love - doesn't mean a thiiing love" - isn't that most beautiful melancholy? My proposition for Bryan would be: he has got a unique voice and a unique piano style - why not record a "solo solo album" - vox & piano? Perhaps he could have a try on guitar as well? But most certainly the record company does not want artistic boldness - what matters to them is "profit maximization". Sigh. Cheers, Christian. P.S.: The solo version of "The Only Face" on the Mamouna promo video illustrates the vox & piano idea very well, doesn't it? ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Hello Christian, a wonderful comment I can absolutely agree with. I could never imagine a Ferry song without it's beautiful melancholy, that's why Mamouna turned out so personal and well. However, there is always some kind of formalistic risk once you write a song based on general mood and a singing style that tends to run too well - or "swims" - with the music - it can turn out great (like within "The Only Face) but it could also limited yourself by taking the "nicest" or "most pleasant way" of expression. Does this make any sense, I must apologize for my english-explanation. The hardest thing is to combine words and music in a similar sense - these moments are very rare (Ferry was able to share quite a lot with us). Raw versions like the "The only Face" live just proofed how brillant Ferry's songs still can be - let's hope the next album will include more rare & raw material. I find it hard to compare his early vocal-style with the one today - it is too different, as you said, less Sprechgesang. It would be nice to have him singing great melodies in an expressive way - if that's possible at all. I think it is. I am sure there is still a lot to come from Mr. Ferry and it will please us - even if it's another album of cover-versions. ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! I hadn't thought of a "sole sole album" before, yet when you said it, it clicked for me. Just BF, his voice and piano, an entire album featuring his range of vocal styles and the atmosphere they impart, aided only by simple piano. He might become known as the brighter writer of new Moody Broody, a real Booty CuteE (sorry for that). But done correctly, the produce just might be a viable project in the eyes of his record company. I would also suggest, if Mr. Ferry's display of talent is hindered due to overriding commercial concerns, he should seriously consider restructuring the way he does business - ditch the classic production and distribution methods, embrace and leverage use of the internet. Get with it! This is tomorrow calling... But I haven't listened to it in years, partly cos I have a vinyl copy only. Your posting makes me want to get the CD!! The second Mackay solo I've never heard. But maybe if it's on CD now too...! - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Monday, August 28, 2000 4:04 PM Subject: [AVALON] Manzanera and Mackay > The newest batch of Manzanera albums are available on his web site. > > Does anyone have any opinions of the 2 Mackay solo albums? I heard 30-second snatches on CDNow.com, and it sounds interesting. I feel Johansen is an underappreciated songwriter. His solo albums were spotty (well, not the first two), but I never get bored of my compilation tape of songs like Lonely Tenement, Big City, Justine, Marquesa De Sade, Frenchette, Funky But Chic, Heard the News, Sweet Revenge, and many others. I saw an early version of his Buster Poindexter show at the Bottom Line (I think) and it was a blast. However, he shouldn't have stayed with that persona for 15 years or however long it was. Jim R. Hi Jane, I haven't been able to write to the list lately as I've been away for a few days, so sorry for this late reply. I was in HMV on 21/8 and was told that the release of The Early Years had been put back a week until 28/8. I will no doubt be in HMV tomorrow to check things out.
