Finally back in London, and in front of my PC at work. It's now time for MY Castle Howard review... Not much left to say (as I suspected) but it really was a fantastic night. I didn't join the other Avalonians down at the front as I had my own guests - I took my mum and dad to the concert for a birthday treat, in return for a lift to Castle Howard!! Well, my dad used to be a bus driver and knows the area well. We (being me and my partner Kirsty) drove up to Sheffield on Thursday night after work straight to my mum and dad's house where we would be staying for a few days. The journey to Castle Howard was stress free, through the backwaters of Doncaster and Selby, avoiding the predictable nastiness of the A1. We got there at 5pm and were treated to Bryan and co. soundchecking, for an hour!! We got most of the set from "The Only Face" onwards, and I swear that the intro to 2HB was played, but then turned in to "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". So, I had a chance to hear "Hard Rain", "Dance Away", "Virginia Plain" and "Slave To Love" when the backing vocals were still in tune. Then the gates opened..... We positioned ourselves on the hill by the side of the sound and lighting towers - the best seats and views I've ever had at any concert! We weren't too near the front as I didn't want my folks being dragged into the madness, after all, it was their first concert since the "6-5 Special" tour in 1959 with Cliff, Tommy Steele and Marty Wilde! It turns out that we were opposite the "special" roped off area where Mrs Ferry, kiddies and guests were sat. Need I say more! From my deck chair and with the aid of some trusty binoculars I began Avalonian spotting - Reecey, Andrew, Jocelyn, and someone who I suspected to be Han. First we ate, then I ventured down to the front just as the first support came on (the horn section). I hovered a while being unable to spot anyone close up as they had been submerged by the increasing throng... then I was recognised - I'm told it's the hair (numerous comparisons to Jonathan Creek/Alan Davies ensued). I met a lot of people I hadn't before and I became a little overwhelmed, but it was good to get brief chats with Han (dirty jokes in english too!!!), Tom and JF Roxy amongst others. I gave a quick wave to Reecey and Andrew who were already crushed up against the barrier. Any further attempts to communicate would have been pointless, and I couldn't risk pushing past Jocelyn!! A brief banjo interlude...if anyone missed it, he was the guy who played banjo with Bryan at Meltdown last year. I'm sure they played the same tune for half an hour, then topped it off with a shambolic rendition of "My Grandfather's Clock" which had a few people singing along. Then on to the main thing (sorry). The first thing that struck me was how clear and powerful the sound was, far better than any of the previous shows I'd attended. John Sutton actually sounded like he was hitting the drums instead of his usual tinker, but that didn't excuse the fluffed intro of "The Way You Look Tonight". Bryan was in fine voice, and hitting the right notes (high and low - "Bitter Sweet" being a good tester). Having a good view of the whole stage it was good to notice how the band were enjoying it and interacting with each other, most of them forgetting their jazz/classical roots and actually throwing some "rock poses" (Nils with the Tele, John Sutton using every limb for a drum fill), and the girls having a dance (Lucy W and Julia during "Street Life"). I also noticed Julia laying right back, shaking her hair as she rose again - and that was during the first song! The horn guys had a little co-ordinated dance for one song (I forget which one, maybe LST), and Julia and Enrico obviously know how to have a good time!! And then Bryan - air guitar, air cello, air trombone and even air percussion!! Is there no end to his "air" repertoire? Whatever, he was clearly enjoying the night, stalking the stage, playing to the ladies and soliciting a response of screams, and of course the unforgettable sunglasses moment. I noticed that he was adding little vocal changes and embellishments (as well as forgetting lyrics). "Street Life" was obviously the biggest goosebump moment of the night for me, even though Bryan was starting to struggle at that point. And "Hard Rain" - was there someone with a hose pipe on cue? I felt the rain start to gently drop, but looked up and the skies were clear. Someone's idea of a joke? Someone must tell Rosie not to get too excited with those backing vocals though, they really became painful and were far too loud in the mix. In fact, it may have been her voice that broke the heavens when "Dance Away" was followed by "Hard Rain". Still, those little things aside it was a great night. So great in fact that for me it was the best show I have seen on the ATGB tour, for a number of reasons - great location, great sound, the Avalonians, and also my mum and dad enjoyed it immensely. Choice quotes : "Superb", "Just like listening to the cd", "He can still sing", and after the climax of Lucy's blistering solo on OOTB my dad exclaimed "Bloody Hell". High praise indeed. They were still buzzing about it when we left them on Monday night. It's a shame that the reported camera crew weren't there as they missed a cracking show that would have looked great on TV. What happened with that? And who purchased a cd signed by Bryan - how many more times do we need these things? Blimey, that's a long one. I wasn't expecting that, it's been building up for a few days. Oh, finally, congratulations to Reecey on your 100th. Did you get a telegram from the Queen? Tom - I don't think there's any doubt that most (all?) of us want to hear some new and original material as quickly as possible. And it needs to be "commercial" too - otherwise I'm afraid that perceived "failure" will send Ferry back into his creative shell and we'll have to wait another 5 years, or maybe even longer..... I really like most of the recent covers he's done - ATGB is one of my favourite albums (by anyone!) and I liked much of Taxi as well. Ferry's interpretation of other people's material does, after all, make a lot of the tracks sound "new". But it really is time for something original now. I too would accept a mix of covers and new stuff to start with, if that means we get something soon - as long as the new tracks outnumber the old! Interesting to see again the repeated Later with Jools Holland interview at the weekend - as you know, Ferry refers to the work he'd been doing in the studio (and the song written with Brian Eno) prior to ATGB, with the comment that something would come out "hopefully late next year" (ie this year!). As we all know, however, the tour has really taken over. So how about this for a plan? 1. The Paris video/DVD is released in October and is heavily promoted(!). 2. Hot on its heels and capitalising on the newly-heightened profile, an album of mainly new material (but perhaps including a track or two from the ATGB and earlier sessions) is released (this side of Christmas!!). We've been told, after all, that there's plenty of stuff already written. 3. In the first half of 2001, Bryan completes the studio work planned with the current band, following which a *second* album - this time completely original material - is released in the second half of 2001, complete with supporting tour! Or am I really living in a dream world?!!
