Mind you not even God could get Your Painted Smile to number one, unless maybe Yorkshire is the beginning of a big flood and 40 Avalonians escape on an ark to the middle of the lake at Castle Howard. And again it was really special. I arrived in the morning in York after a boat trip from Holland to meet the other Dutch who already departed 24 hours earlier. We went to York to have a drink and a chat and to visit the town. In the afternoon me and Patricia took a taxi to the hotel of Johnny, Jocelyn, Andrew, Tom and some others to pick up a ticket and have a beer and to start this wonderful evening. End of the afternoon Tom and John and Emma and two kids arrived and after John showed me the GLJRSC * we departed to the Castle Howard campingsite to raise John and Emma's tent. ( now I understand why he offered me a lift). It was clear that Tom W never saw a tent from as close as this and he soon understood that the best way to help was to do nothing. Emma and John had obvious done this more in such a hurry so after I phoned the Guinness Book of records to report the exact time we were readyfor departure. When we arrived everyone had already took their position before the stage. After I told a few people that someone in the front had my heart-medicines it was easy to take position in the front row. After three minutes I understood this wasn't the best position to speak as much Avalonians as possible I decided to leave the frontrow and take my position again as soon as the show starts. What a pleasure to speak to you all! Some of you I spoke for the first time: Jane Collard, Cecillia Tonon (Tonton for friends). She looked so happy when the show was running that I almost decided to look the rest of the show at her. Simon Galloway (I want that PM Virginia plain version), Tom Wallace (practice your BBC English for the next time, I will practice my Scottish, I'm sure Johnny or John are able to help me), John Fulton (I was curious to meet him after those "he's a firestarter" stories, believe me if he's a firestarter I'm a serial killer.) And the people I met before: John, Johnny Andrew, Jocelyn, Chris, Richard etc. It was especially good to meet Robert Whiteford and Sue. We missed each other in Petworth. This time he was so keen to speak with me, he specially bought a dozen Stella can's to be sure I would join him during the concert. How could I disappoint him? So I took my place with about ten rows before me. What a concert it was again. The usual highlights but I was completely blown away by Hard Rain. A whirlwind is the best way to descripe this version. This band is so good that even the songs which are not my favourite are a real pleasure to hear. The strings in Jealous Guy at the end....beautiful!The spirit on stage is so good. You must have seen the girls during Hard Rain. Only this one was worth the trip. I don't need a RM Reunion, can't be better as this. The shades of Andrew Shearer on stage was another highlight. Bryan put it on with his back to the string section and then suddenly turn around to the girls. Surprise!!! Saw two good pictures of Bryan with Andrews shades. Cool. After the concert we tried to join the afterparty. In the afternoon another Dutch Han went to Castle Howard to pick up his ticket and said to girl behind the desk. "Hello I'm gone get my ticket and my backstagepass." That trick doesn't worked so he asked a lady with three kids who left the building if he could get her backstage pass. " If that makes you happy" she replied and gave it to him. Why he didn't asked an autograph from Lucy H? Because he didn't knew that that woman was Bryan's wife with the three boys. We discovered that after the concert when he saw the woman again and he said," Look there's that woman who gave the pass". After the concert he spoke to Enrico Tomasso about him missing some notes in TOF. With Colin Good about playing with Bryan and how he got the band together. Colin had a funny story about a girl in the frontrow who's tits tried to escape from her catsuit.....and finally one succeeded. And he spoke to the girls. Rosie Wetters was so friendly to get her backstage pass out of her caravan so Han's wife could get in too. After about 45 minutes (or was it longer?) we finally get some passes to from people who departured. While we entered Bryan left. Only a friendly goodbye. The party was at the end so most people started to leave. When I came in Lucy W immediately recognised me from some previous show. Hello there you are again, I spotted you in the audience, she said. She told me about the shows that are planned for the near future and about the invitation to work with BF in the studio. At the Point she had to leave we gave each other our email-addresses She was very excited about the Brusselsvideo I told her about. And she would love to have a copy, because she isn't on the forth-coming Parisvideo. We ended the evening under a tree with some wine and foot . After that we drove with six in a VW-golf to York. Believe me..that wasn't the best part of the evening. In the hotel they openened the bar for us... you can guess the rest. See you all again and thanks Han GLJRSC=Grey Lagoons Johnny Reece Surprice Cake (Yes I know it is 'Surprise') ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! One thing I did notice was that Bryan's voice seemed to falter badly during the last sentence of 'Jealous Guy'. Sounded pretty horrible (though not as horrible as Enrico's flat and sustained blast earlier on), and I wondered if he'd be able to complete the show. But he did (although, it seemed, not at full throttle). Did anyone else notice this? ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Well the UK shows have finally come to an end and there are only about four shows left to do in europe so where do we go from here? When and if the new album appears in february I'd hate to be faced with yet another set of cover versions. Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the ATGB album and tour and I seem to be one of a minority who enjoyed Taxi, but this wasn't the sort of material that made me a fan of Roxy and Ferry. I could handle something with a 60/40 split between originals and covers, but would prefer a complete originals album. If Bryan is having problems with the song writing process then maybe it's time to reform Roxy and let Manzanera and Mackay enhance whatever material he does come up with. After all his strongest and most material was always produced under the Roxy banner. Let's face it if you took the early Roxy content out of the current live set it would not have been anywhere near as interesting or entertaining. What does the rest of the list feel about this? ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! You're absoluteley right, Tom. I would not be interest myself in facing another record of cover-versions (I didn't even buy the new ones) and if understood Ferry in one of his latest interviews, he loves to go back to his own material too - that's what we are all waiting for. ATGB was a great surprise and brought back a wide audience to him but it would be rather sad to see him running too far on nostalgia-thing. If he's a real creative artist he's dying to do something new. I also agree with the spirit of the his earliest songs on this tour, some like "Sunset" had never been played before and did sound so fresh, new and highly emotional on this tour - that's the real Ferry, ATGB is just perfect Entertainment, no more. Wish he had done "I'm in the mood for love" as this song has some more personal spirit then the others and the bandeon-players were just outstanding, an interesting combination that I would love to hear (but less overproduced) on his new record too. Personally I'd like him to go on songwriting in the manner of the live-version of "The Only Face" - very raw and limited or in a Roxy Music sense, that brings back the avantgarde-mood, sound & intention but maybe I am expecting too much. Now, while he's doing so well again, I'd rather have him done something more personal, more artistic music that brings back risks - music, where the commercial aspect (like ATGB was) is the least important thing to him. The new success should bring back some of his old confidence and I am sure there are a lot of songs he' had hold back and he might be not scared about now to publish. Let's hope the best. Btw, as much as I loved the Castle Howard show I was a bit disappointend that he wasn't able to say more then the usual "thanks for being a great audience tonight" (something he said everywhere, even in Germany at Baden-Baden concert where the audience was pretty lousy!). It was his last british concert and there were all these long-time followers, it would have been a nice gesture. The show was perfect but it had become a bit stereotype, somehing that usually happens when you're going on tour for such a long time. Hanover might include a diffrent angle and sound as the orchestra supposed to big larger but after that he should take a long break, trying to get his feet ont to the ground again - writing simply good songs with (hopefully) better lycrics again - something I have been missing for a very long time now!!!! Hope he's taking his time and does not rush anything, I'd rather wait another 5 years instead of getting confrontating with more cover-versions. Und das Spiel geht weiter, wie man weiß, noch viele schönste Wiedersehen....see you all in Hanover. Btw, hay anyone found out why Jim Lawn completed a list of people who attented Castle Howard? ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" !
