I couldn't leave that special place at the front now could I? I met up with Andrew and Reecey first at 6.45. and then went to the bar to get myself a cool Pimms. Came back and thought, 'God where is everyone?' Andrew, did you get your beer, or had my husband drunk it on the mile walk back from the bar? The fantastic Jocelyn and friend had saved me a place at the front - thank you. You do realise we stood there for two hours before Bryan came on stage. Btw Chris, as you pointed out my birthday is the same week as yours, I will be expecting a birthday card. Actually, expensive week for us, my husband and daughter's birthdays are the same week. It's nice to know we share the same star sign as the one and only. I don't need to say how fantastic the show was, Reecey has said it all. Apart from those drunks that were behind me and Jocelyn, spoiling it with their noise and chatter. Security were useless. Jocelyn told them a thing or too. I think you would make a good bouncer Jocelyn! I was going to take my daughter away from that lot, but she insisited on staying put. I must admit, once Bryan had smiled at me a few times with that sexy grin I thought I was going to melt into the ground. I nearly was on the ground, on top of Jocelyn. I thought the barrier was going to come down. You must be counting your bruises Jocelyn, where I kept being pushed into you. Cecilia, thank you for your kind letter. I'm sorry, I didn't realise we were to meet afterwards. Martin dragged me off to the bar before it closed. I hope you had a safe journey home. I'll write to you off-list. Jim, thanks for the photograph of me and Nils. Or and the other one you talked me into buying! B.t.w. there is a small, but good review of the Roxy Music, Early Years in The Mail On Sunday. My pal Vanessa had arrived from NYC into Glasgow on Thursday evening and we spent the evening enthusing about the concert. At 3am we decided that we had better get some kip or we would not be looking our glamorous best for the maestro. We arrived into York about 2.00pm and the day was well and truly underway! I drove my pal crazy throughout the day with stressing over not getting there in time, missing the train, not getting the perfect view, not meeting Avalonians, not seeing BF up close, not hearing the music properly etc. etc. She bore it all with great fortitude and calm - you need some serenity in life at happenings like these. On arrival at CH my pal decided that we both needed a drink -me for my nerves and her for my nerves. As I was sitting on the ground I was looking around trying to work out if Avalonians - like elephants (no insult intended) - are difficult to describe but you'll know one when you see one. Hmmm no sign. Then I heard the word 'Avalon' - was I going crazy? Was I starting to aurally hallucinate? So I sidled up 'Hey - are you Avalonians?' 'Yes' came the reply from Hans and Diane, a fellow Glaswegian. Hurray! I was in and the next thing we were deluged by Avalonians - Jane Collard (very demure in a deck chair I must say), Johnny Reece, Jocelyn Fisk, Chris Turner, Andrew Shearer - good grief, these guys get everywhere. Then the first stampede to the stage. The only thing I was ever good at in athletics was the sprint - well the old magic's still there I can tell you. As can my ribs which are still sore from the wallop they got as I hit the barrier in a most unladylike fashion. Unfortunately we had to return when the stewards moved us back and I lost my spot and had to move 10cms back from my original view. I then spent the next 2 hours stressing that this view might differ hugely from my original view. Vanessa took over my stress management again. More Avalonians appeared, lots of fellow Scots residents and exiles as well as our Continental friends - John O'B., Tom Wallace, Terry Lane, Rob and Sue Whiteford (an honorary Scot, although I don't know she'll thank me for that and more of both later) Cecilia and Hans. Again if I've forgotten anyone, many apologies, just one fabulous blur. And then the great man himself. What can I say? I thought that this was a show and a half. Bry looked great (*sigh*), was in fine form, great voice, posing/pouting/imperiously urging us on as only he can in his heavy lidded way .... And I'm convinced that during JOOTT he looked at me and smiled - and don't anyone try and deny it ok? Colin Good deserves special mention for smiling at the crowd continuously - he looked like he was having a great time. And then it was over Awwwwwwwwwwww. Much post concert chat trying to retain what remained of the night. By the way, apologies to Johnny Reece and Andrew Shearer who were right in front of me during the concert, for my singing - as the man himself says - I can't help it. The most memorable thing about the night? Well leaving the performance aside which has been covered by Johnny Reece - it was meeting the Avalonians. It really made the night perfect for me. Everyone was so pleasant and where else can you chat freely and for hours about such a perfect obsession? Also, I'm sure my fandom is pretty amateurish compared to a lot of you guys and yet everybody made me feel very welcome and involved. Vanessa said it made her night too - we were the nicest, friendliest fan base ever. She reckoned Bry should do an exclusive performance for us alone - what do you think guys? I think we should keep buying our lottery tickets and make contact when they come good. If life is the table and fate is the wheel ... Special mention must go to Sue and Rob Whiteford, who being polite people, kindly took V and I back to York having been hustled in spectacular fashion by myself. They kindly deposited us following an hilarious journey spent with them discussing which Roxy songs their daughter preferred - watch that kid. So a big virtual round of applause for them .......... Saturday evening was spent discussing BF/RM/AVA etc. and watching the Brussels video, and BF/RM compilation. Trying to harness what remained of the night before. *Sigh* Any final thoughts? Well someone who shall remain nameless - ah the hell with that it was Chris Turner- said that every man on the list secretly thinks he's Bryan Ferry. Is this true? I won't tell you what I said, I have enough pressure in my life as it is. Cheerio and thanks for the memories. She gives it a full 5 stars. Mind you, I do take issue with her comment that "It is great to remember that Bryan Ferry had a truly unique voice before he became a full-time toff". Kirsty - he STILL has a truly unique voice! Best wishes Jane - --------------------------------------------- "Roxy Music - The Early Years: Review by Kirsty MacColl - Mail on Sunday 20 August 2000 (Rating 5 stars) Roxy Music's early records were truly bizarre and groundbreaking. It is easy to forget just how experimental their early stuff was, as the massive radio status their later songs acquired leaves us with the impression they were just Teflon smoothies. A new compilation sets the record straight and the songs and production still manage not to sound dated. It is great to remember that Bryan Ferry had a truly unique voice before he became a full-time toff. On this collection he can be found singing the maddest of lyrics in a variety of vocal styles: from Fifties-style crooner to full-on mad bleating Dolly the sheep in sequined high heels. Ladytron sounds uncannily like a Frank Black track. If There Is Something starts off with Ferry singing in a peculiarly in-bred country twang before it turns into a manic torch song. "I would put roses by our door, sit in the garden, growing potatoes by the score," he sings with a fervour only Freddie Mercury ever equalled. Personally, the image of Ferry growing potatoes is one I shall treasure for ever. Nobody who remembers these songs from the first time round will be able to forget the shock of seeing Brian Eno with green eyeshadow and a feather boa, but unlike a number of their contemporaries, their music was even more interesting than their visual image. The rhythm section is really tight and Phil Manzanera's guitars still sound great. Eno's strange synth sounds lend a futuristic feel to the music even now, and the sax is just plain weird. It's good that this record seems to have been compiled by someone who genuinely loves the music, and that the tracks haven 't been edited. The Bogus Man is still nine minutes and twenty seconds of one of the most glorious head trips ever committed to vinyl. Virginia Plain, Do The Strand, In Every Dream Home A Heartache and Streetlife are all damn fine tracks too, but my own personal favourite apart from Bogus Man is Pyjamarama, which I had as a vinyl seven-inch 45. I took it to a party around 1977 and someone nicked it. This collection is worth buying for that track alone. Apologies if I've missed anyones name off. Also Terry Lane, Jocelyn and Lyndsey who I saw there but didn't actually get around to speaking to. Bryan was brilliant and full of energy. It was a great night, made even better by meeting all the Avalonians. Great to meet all who were there. Pity about the idiots that Reecey mentioned who were pushing and generally making a complete fool of themselves during the performance. Some drunken girls shouting 'Oooh, isn't he gorgeous' whilst pushing everyone forward and not really getting very far themselves. Bryans Performance and meeting everyone made these idiots seem insignificant. Thanks to everyone there! Hope to meet you all again - hope it won't be too long. Having wondered around for ages I was a bit fed up and waited outside a souvenir place by the Cathedral for her to emerge - anyway it was a chance for a quick fag. SHIT ! - round the corner comes Bryan with 3 kids in tow. Walking at the speed only he can. Fag bites the dust -into the shop - "Sue - come out now - - quick - quick" . Detecting the panic in my voice - no questions asked - Sue ran out - "That's Bryan" I said . Luckily he had stopped to look in a shop window (strictly no sale - it was closed) . I must admit to being very nervous about approaching him but Sue just strode up . "Good luck for tomorrow night Mr Ferry - we've come up to see you" . "Oh - Thank You" said the maestro. I had recovered sufficiently to speak and pitched in with the brilliant "We're really looking forward to it" . "Oh - good - good" said Bryan. And that was it - he was off. Much though we wanted to see where he went , we decided it would be totally unfair to follow him around - particularly since he was on his own with 3 kids, if that makes sense. So we headed back to the taxi rank. Where Bryan appeared 5 minutes later - just sitting on the wall yards behind us while one of the kids spun round the "queue here" taxi signpost ! It took ages for a taxi to appear but we didn't want to bother him again. As we got in our taxi we risked a wave - and got lovely big one back which made my day. I still can't really believe that happened to us. So onto Castle Howard. Got there at half six to see the gates had been open for an hour already so headed for stage left to see if I could recognise any Avalonians. Eventually I decided Jocelyn was definitely Jocelyn and from there met loads of people which was lovely. One of the good things about Ferry is that by and large his fans are really nice people. Just as I went up to ask the security guy when the tape was coming down he took it down, causing a panic as I had to rescue my box of Stella's from the edge before making the dash to the front. We found ourselves next to Jane Collard who I am especially grateful to for keeping me sane during the banjo session. How many songs can there be about the bloody Spanish Civil War ? I remember meeting Terry Lane, John O'Brien and Therese O'Donnell during this treat as well. But suddenly the harp is being played - Han has arrived beside me (lured by the can's of Stella?) and we are off. We just sang our way through until Do the Strand. I still can't believe how far Bryan Ferry has come back on this tour, his confidence, singing and level of performance as high as I have ever seen it. Even Roxy diehards I was speaking to were admitting this is the best band he has ever put together. I'll say it once because I have to - he NEEDS a big hit single and he's back as a household name to the youngsters as well. Lovely to meet Richard Swift again and his sister after the finale, where we really just chatting about how lucky we were to see Ferry perform at such a level given the circumstances preceding ATGB. Then a really funny car journey back to the Holiday Inn Express with Therese and Vanessa who made us laugh all the way. We really enjoyed it and I hope the end of the tour doesn't mean the end of Avalonians meeting up now and again............... It was the icing on the cake to meet so many Avalonians in one place for once. It was just a pity that we all didn't have longer to chat and exchange more BF trivia! BTW on the human interest front, the farmhouse b&b proprietrix with whom I'd stayed, by way of a throw away comment, mentioned that she'd met Otis Ferry the previous week! One of her friend's had invited her to lunch and OF was there as he was helping out with the dogs on some YTS scheme(!)at her farm. The full version though was released on 7" in Holland - (yes it's those those damn Dutch again !). The one we have heard at gigs has 3 verses instead of the 5 on the full version, missing out the verses "What did you see".. and "Who did you meet". The Video for the Single is the same as this.
