"Five Go Mad In Malton" Friday, August 18th, 2000. Woke up with a start. Panicked. Had been up till 05.00am working, and didn't set an alarm. Mightily relieved to see it was only 9.30. My train to York was at 11.34. Plenty of time, so pottered around, much Tea, Coffee too, checked e-mails on my allegedly now-working new improved PC, and only checked I had the Gig tickets in my pockets about 26 times. At 10.30am - out the door. Now, here's the thing. I am so used to the fact that almost every time I take a journey within the UK by train it is from Euston station, that I didn't give my journey into town another thought. Off I went, through Highbury, Kings Cross, then to Euston. Up the escalators, 20 minutes to spare, quite happy. Maybe just enough time to grab a vile coffee and a cardboard sandwich and that'll be me sorted. But - hang on - my train isn't listed on the 'departures' board. Eh ? Then, a sudden realisation. It's not Euston, you GIT, it's Kings Cross you should be at, which of course you've just passed through ! OK - panic again. No change for ticket. Have to wait in a queue. Worried. Eventually on my way, got up the stairs and onto the concourse at Kings Cross at 11.30. Phew ! Just 4 minutes to spare. OK, now which platform ? Let's check the board. Oh , No...... That sickening large red notice is plastered there, right beside the '11.34 to York' listing. It says, in huge capital letters : CANCELLED. British Rail, you complete and utter Bastards. So, off to join another queue (ironically enough, almost stretching all the way back to Euston) to get my ticket changed. No problem sir, you can take the 12.00 train instead. Well, this calmed me down a bit - after all, the first priority was to get to York, after all. That part looking solved, I wanted a reservation as I knew my recent expert-medics defying unpredictable dodgy knee would play up later at the gig if I heard the unwanted news that there were no seats left. There were no seats left. Sometimes you just know it's going to be one of those days. So, squeezed into a 4 by 6 inch space between 2 draughty carriages, I began the 2 hours 10 minutes journey to York. I ended up sitting on the floor, basking in the glory only usually found on travelling by Inter City in the UK. To pass the time, I thought I'd put the MD Walkman on with some choice Bry 'live' cuts to pass the time, but it was so noisy there I couldn't hear it. Amused myself instead by eavesdropping on a conversation between 2 similarly crushed passengers, 2 students on their way up to Scotland, with the guy trying desperately to chat up a stunningly beautiful fellow female student, name of Emily. ("Hey, you're studying Law too - how about that" !) All the while they were having this conversation, this bloke was not, I repeat not, looking at her eyes whilst he spoke to her. And I don't blame him. I digress. Some 2 hours later, having just abandoned the idea that I should suddenly enrol for a course in Law at some distant Scottish University, there we were at York. Brill. I half considered checking the 'trains to Malton' situation, but realised the way my luck was going I would probably end up with the last 'suburban saver' ticket which would require me to travel face-down whilst lying on the roof, so I thought I'd take a Cab instead. "The Talbot Hotel, Malton, please".... "Certainly, Sir - that'll be £23 - sold ! - to the sucker with the dodgy knee". Well, he didn't actually say that, but he should have done. Malton is really nice. Great hotel too, hand picked by Ms. Fiske, of course. I was the first to arrive from our squad of reprobates. Had to go out to get some dosh, just in case they had added some naked pictures of Julia to the tour Merchandise later on. Spied a few little cute Tearooms on the way, and went back to the Hotel to find that Jocelyn and Lyndsey had arrived, so off to lunch it was. There were definitely a few Avalonians lurking in the suburbs, as JFRoxy and friends were in the same restaurant as us. J & L went Champagne hunting, and I returned to the Hotel to find Han(1) and Patricia making the Beer Garden their own. I think Patricia was quite relieved to see me arrive, as I had her ticket. Then the arrival of Andrew Shearer, the surprise arrival of J.O'B and Emma & kids, and Tom Wallace (who had travelled from somewhere equi-distant to the moon, as usual) and then a rather tired Chris Turner arrived just in time to leave for the gig, after a nightmare drive. Tom got a room in our hotel, and J.O'B and squad went in search of a campsite, as the hotel was now full. Then, we were off - Castle Howard, here we come... Packed when we arrived. They'd opened the doors at 3pm ! Hi to Therese & Colette, who we all met early on. Of course, the Dutch contingent were there in full force - with a huge Dutch flag to drape over the barrier at the front. 2 girls - obviously inexperienced in 'Ferry Gig etiquette' - broke the tape and rushed to the front - some 2 hours before it should have happened. It wasn't even 7pm yet ! The 'stage rush' had occured, but thankfully we were ready - and all made it up the front - no mean feat as we were way, way out on the left when it all started. This meant we had to endure that damn Hillbilly 'support act' nonsense of course, but as much as 'security' tried to get us all to 'go back' again - hey guys, it just wasn't going to happen... Mind you, the 'support' drove a few away to the Beer tent, I wouldn't wonder. The usual beginning - Quartet on first, sitting quietly, as Julia (baby) appeared for the 'Song Of The Night' solo. Her face is her fortune, she's got a Harp of gold (with apologies to J.O'B lyrics inc.) The solos - and we were off... Bry looking happy, healthy, into TWYLT. Similar set to all the recent other outdoor gigs. Crowd in healthy and boisterous voice, and much Champers being quaffed stage-centre at the front (no need to ask). Crowd hassle once again i'm afraid, though this time directly behind Jocelyn (some people just never learn, do they ?). Quite what these people were on, we are unsure. Not so much 'drunk' and 'high' - but a mixture of both, and then some more. And a bit more after that. Security (so called) didn't do a lot about it, unfortunately. I'm just amazed the 2 of them are still alive ! Did Enrico help himself to the Jocelyn store of Champers ? One would think so, the way he played the solo in 'The Only Face' - whoops ! Really, really excellent sound though tonight - positively pounding. A slight change to the beginning of the second part of the set ('The White Jacket Years') as 'Sunset' began... This is done so well, wonderful. Surprised though that it began the 2nd set. Almost a nasty moment as the new Bassist had forgotten to turn his Bass Amp on, and had to be reminded by Lucy W. to do so, just seconds before it was needed. Colin Good was particularly animated tonight, milking all the attention he could from our own front of stage Sirens. A massive cheer went up as 'Oh Yeah' began, as ever. 'Slave To Love' was particularly good, though, as I mentioned to Mr. Shearer at the time, this is when Lucy Theo comes into her own, with her gyrations. It didn't help that she kept lifting her t-shirt at the same time to rub her navel. This was possibly the most distracting moment I have ever witnessed at a Bryan Ferry concert. OK, let's move on. A change of lyrics to 'Slave' tonight, containing the line "we remph aah aal phlmpph, not the chained and bound". Interesting. Late on - the best performance of any song I have heard at these outdoor shows. Tonights version of 'Hard Rain' was the most powerful, blistering, brilliant version I had heard yet. Simply, incredibly, awesome. Bounding towards the climax (ooh matron) we went into Virginia Plain, and, right on cue - it was 'Shades On' time... Wonderful stuff. The normally quiet Mr. Shearer went over the edge, and in a fit of complete unashamed excitement, ripped off his Shades and threw them onto the stage. His moment would come, seconds later. Just before launching into Do The Strand, Ferry spotted the shades on the floor, leaned down, picked them up, and donned them, posing to the crowd. Brilliant ! Then we were into the Strand, as Ferry calmly put the shades away (left inside breast pocket, in case you wish to make a claim, Mr Shearer...) In a moment, it was over... Prokofiev blared out, and the fireworks began - sensational too... The 'stragglers' around the stage, chatting for ages afterwards, were, of course, all Avalonians. Quite right too. Chats with all and sundry apres-gig, (sorry if I forget someone - but there was so many of us !) but Hi to Tracy Connell, Julia Liva, Chris Cassidy, and of course Cecilia Tonon, who had travelled all the way over from Venice, (via the Orkney Islands and Glasgow). But - how do the Dutch do it ? A couple of 'blagged' Back Stage passes. Well done guys. I heard a rumour that one of you (Han 2 ?) had mentioned he deserved some as he'd been to 6 gigs on the Tour. Unfair ! This was my 14th Ferry gig since December ! I hereby claim a large set of passes for next time. No doubt, the Dutch will have a fascinating story to tell, and I look forward to it very much. Hurry up and tell us all the gory details, guys ! Back to The Talbot Hotel, J.O'B and Tom had arrived back there first, and were kindly keeping the Bar open. Surprise, eh ? We all piled in, much Ferry/Roxy/Gig chat, anoraknaphobia. Excellent. A little 'down' for just a moment or two, as it was the 'last gig' of the tour. Or was it ? Ha-ha ! Our little 'party' included myself, J.O'B, Tom, Andrew, Chris, Jocelyn, and Lyndsey. After an hour or so of our little party, I spotted J.O'B behind the Bar, asking for a lighter. "Strange", I thought, he doesn't smoke ! I didn't give it another thought , and carried on the chit chat. Next thing, in walks a wildly grinning Mr O'Brien, carrying a huge Cake, lit by 2 candles, with '100' in big red letters on it. I couldn't help but laugh, but it was such a great moment. J.O'B, Emma, & the kids had gone to the trouble to make this superb cake to mark the milestone of my 100th attendance of a 'live' Ferry performance. Amazing. Thank God I hadn't had too much to drink by then, I would have probably weeped like an idiot. And the icing, well - only a true Roxyite like John could have come up with this one... The icing on it was decorated in different colours, of different items. Want to know what they were ? This was sensational. In the correct order, the Cake itself was decorated with : Blue Suns, Grey Lagoons, Silver Starfish, and Honey-Moons. Unbelievable. I don't know how to thank you guys, a really, really nice touch, and I get a warm glow just thinking about it - and I haven't even touched the Chardonnay ! The Champagne, and Wine, then came out in force. The Cake, and all of us, have been recorded for future Avalonia posterity by the cameras of Tom, and Jocelyn. Many, many thanks. The drinking & chatting went on for several hours. Thanks to the industrious barmaid (Elaine ?) who put up with us all, and even calmed the waters by supplying Teas and Coffees to us all late on. The first thing I remember after that was a loud hammering noise on my bedroom door, at 9am. I attempted to grunt "hang on a minute", though I suspect it came out sounding like the previously mentioned new lyric to Slave To Love. I remembered then, with horror, that I had deemed it to be a splendid idea (some 4 hours before) to have a full breakfast delivered to my room. Oh well, the fifth night in a row with less than 4 hours kip - I should be used to it by now. Very much half-asleep, I set the breakfast on the table, and attempted to butter the toast, and sugar and milk the Tea. I may have buttered the Tea, and sugar and milked the toast, I'm really not sure. Still, I got through it, my mind awash with images flashing across my half-concious brain of snippets of the dream I was having which was so rudely interrupted, with cancelled trains, Champagne, Cakes, Wine, and Gyrating Navels. I was about to go back to sleep, but thought I should check the 'brochure' to see what the checking-out time was. Naturally, I wanted to find that it was definitely not one of those hotels where the check-out time was 11.00am. The check-out time was 11.00am. This was not good news. Still, I made it downstairs, emptied myself into one of the Lounges, and ordered a gallon of coffee. Tom then appeared, then Chris and Andrew, and a return visit too by John et al. About a year later, the Girls surfaced, looking distinctly fragile. Much Tour chat - no doubt much of which will be included in future posts - you know the sort of thing, best gig of the tour, best song - etc etc.. Looking forward to it. We all, slowly but surely, started to drift off back into what we call our 'normal' lives. I had a while to wait until my trains, so hobbled around York for a while, only to be annoyed by a not very favourable review of the gig by some crappy local rag, by a crappy local journalist who knows sod all. Biased ? Me ? British Rail didn't let me down, by making sure my first train was sufficiently late enough for me to miss my connection, which enabled me to see the sights of Doncaster for an hour. I did find out though, that apparently the infamous 'Top Rank' has gone - site of many Roxy tours in the 70s, attended by the likes of myself, and Jocelyn, long before all this wonderful Avalonia madness began. It's been quite a year, you know. And we all want more. Next time, is the best time, we all know. Having enjoyed 2 days of sussing out the area (North Yorkshire is absolutely beautiful, by the way), I arrived at Castle Howard at around 5:30 pm. From "Car Park 3" I could hear Bryan and band rehearsing (people around me in the queue saying "is that Bryan Ferry? Is it a tape?") - gate opened just before 6pm. I made my way stage right - just behind the "barrier tape". As a result of a life-long habit of eavesdropping I heard someone with a Scottish accent mention "Avalon" and "list", only to discover that I was sitting next to Diane and Therese (plus friend from NYC). Finally meeting others from the list completely made this concert for me - as well as Diane and Therese, it was great to meet Chris Turner, Hans, Collette and family, Andrew Shearer, Reecey, Jocelyn, Richard Swift, Terry Lane, Cecilia and especially (as they had to put up with me for the entire evening!) Rob and Sue Whiteford. Apologies if I've forgotten anyone, but it was great to meet you! Simon G's encouragement earlier this week to positive thinking obviously worked - apart from a brief light shower (ironically during "A Hard Rain...."), it was a reasonable summer's evening (by this year's standards!). The hard rain hit my hotel around 1:00 am. Surprised by the early move to the front (7pm - I'd planned for 8pm!), but still managed to be close to the stage and very central. But where did Bryan find that banjo lot from? Is it my imagination, or did they go on even longer than at Petworth (Kasey Chambers at Ragley was much better)? I agree with Reecey about the crowd hassle - some close by were completely off their heads, and far more interested in their own voices and chatter than listening to what we'd all come to see. The concert itself? Well - what can I add to previous performances? Excellent, as they've all been. A long set - most of the favourites. Great voice, great stage presence, great backing musicians, etc etc - it's all been said before. Bryan did not disappoint. Bryan looked and sounded wonderful. Yes, roses were thrown to him, but did anyone else notice the "undergarments" being tossed, stage right, onto stage (by someone who obviously thought they were at a Tom Jones concert!)?. When Bryan realised what had been thrown, he raised his eyebrows in disbelief and laughed. He was clearly enjoying himself, and having "Ferry minors" (Merlin and Tara I presume) acting as stagehands beforehand and creeping on backstage during the concert was a lovely touch. Minor quibbles - to quote Reecey's earlier post .... I thought I'd imagined the change of lyrics, but obviously not! But that's part of Bryan's charm isn't it? Also, didn't we miss a verse of Hard Rain? A pity about Enrico's trumpet on "The Only Face", but the man still has style! And I think Bryan could have made more of it being the last concert of the UK tour (in the best setting that I've been to), but, as I say, these are minor quibbles. It was a wonderful concert. Bryan is in great form, the band is superb, and I for one have had a great year following him. I had a wander round York this morning (Saturday) before returning home, and bought a local paper (well I had to, it had a picture of Bryan on the front!) - concert review was good, but implied that the event was "tasteful" rather than "involving" - the reviewer obviously wasn't standing where I was (he implied that there should have been large video screens). But the pictures were good, and I've attemped to scan them and send them to Kicki. Finally, my "human interest" story is that I saw Otis Ferry in Malton on Wednesday. I was sitting in a queue of traffic when I saw this tall good-looking lad coming out of a shop. Now 2 weeks ago I wouldn't have had a clue what he looked like, but thanks to the Mail on Sunday I recognised him (even down to the green wellington boots!). My suspicions were confirmed by a waitress in the hotel where I was staying (in Burythorpe) who told me that Bryan Ferry's eldest son worked at the stables in the next village. Not as good as meeting Bryan of course ....! I was wondering why I felt so flat this evening - but Steve Siren's post has summed it up. It's exactly like returning from a holiday... Bryan - please bring out the new album soon (plus supporting tour!). But it's been a great year - and finally meeting others from this list has been wonderful.
