One writes to the list, asking for legal or illegal Roxy/Ferry goods. Another member responses, on the heels of other previous cryptic messages. I must ask. Is Avalon List the latest cover for boiler room traders? Please, stop the subrogation of this list, unless, of course you want to make a more honest man of Jim Lawn by lending credence to his accusation that Avalon is nothing more than a group of profiteers and bootleggers. The last time I read Jason's information about Avalon List, I understood it to say the list is for fans. Please, air your trading activities in the tape/cd trade sheets! Let this list exist free of questionable, illegal activities (and I am not speaking of our cd trees). I am speaking of the covert trading (meant to be covert, but with startling frequency appears on the list due to careless addressing), of unreleased studio material! (Do I hear some moaning?) You are endangering Avalon and smoe.org by using this group as cover. And as Mr. Lawn said, I have no doubt you truly are fans, but your obsession misguides you and does not warrant the reckless abuse of the entire list population. The inordinate subterfuge that has been, and still is, applied by a hand full of collectors seeking rare/unusual BF/RM paraphernalia is suffocating this list! Avalon@smoe.org is a forum for fans and should not be subverted. It's not all right for list members to trade/swap items off list, but it is ok if they are treed. A lot of folk on this list have bought items from various sources over the years for a lot of cash. If they want to arrange a trade/swap with another list member off list member what is the problem? Could it just be that your problem with this is that it means you don't get a copy. This is not an a personal attack on you, but you can surely see how that conclusion could be arrived at be it right or wrong. I know from off list discussions with other list members that there is the feeling that some folk would have them do all the work unearthing the goodies while others are quite happy to sit back and reap the benefits. I don't know you so I can't say if that is true in your case, but I will say that you are in danger of making it sound that way. If people exchanging cd's/tapes off list and for no financial gain is a danger to the list then surely by your own argument so are the various cd trees. > I am > speaking of the covert trading (meant to be covert, but with startling > frequency appears on the list due to careless addressing), of unreleased > studio material! (Do I hear some moaning?) Where do you think that the material used in the cd trees comes from. I take it that you did not get a copy of "Strictly Confidential" because the use of the three unreleased demo recordings were a danger to the list. If you did take a copy then where do you think these tracks came from? A list member either traded other recordings for them or bought them somewhere and then kindly decided to donate them for use in the project. This was also probably the case with some of the material that went towards the APS video, perhaps Martin would like to make comment on that. > The inordinate subterfuge that has been, and still is, applied by a hand > full of collectors seeking rare/unusual BF/RM paraphernalia is > suffocating this list! Avalon@smoe.org is a forum for fans and should > not be subverted. Personally I don't see a problem with list members trading items off list and I certainly don't know of any list member selling recordings on or off list. I also don't have a problem with a list member letting it be know that they have an item of memorabilia for sale off list, after all they probably had to pay for it in the beginning and at lest this way it will go to a true fan rather than a someone who makes a living out of over charging fans. If anything is a danger to the avalon list it is more likely to be the number of personal attacks that have featured over the last two or three months. Tom. Have to say on first hearing, the 6 mins + version of This Love is a bit trip-hoppy for my taste. I think the Bryan F version has captured a forlornness (forlornity?) that is missing from the original. Much as I like Liz Fraser's voice (always have), I'm not sure she has connected with the song. Bryan appears to sing the somewhat disconnected words in a way that makes sense of them and points to personal experience. Having said that, I think one often hears a cover first and then finds the original difficult to adjust to. I recall loving Rod Stewart's Have I Told You Lately, only to be pointed to the original version by Van The Man. I found (and still do) the original to be cheesy and schmaltzy (all glissandro strings and tinkly piano), while I know Morrison fans feel the same way about Rod's take. Different strokes, I guess... Time's Up.
