Lo and behold a later day Kari-Ann (the original's still the greatest) recreating the pose from Roxy Music. At 51 she still looks fab reclining in a knocked up filigree fancy - wonder what happened to the 70's costume. She is quoted as saying she'd given birth to her first son Arthur (an Avalonian in the making?) six months before the cover was shot and hormonally was feeling very motherly and not at all sexy. She was working full time and had never heard of Roxy Music who could only afford to pay her £20 for the shoot. As she says " it sounded fun - and it was". The rest is history. Kari-Ann is all woman. The Hollies even wrote a song about her beauty, "Hey Kari-Ann what's your game now etc." (True). Johnny Rogan's book lists her pre-Roxy squeeze list - a galaxy of male rock heterosexuality - and I had the weirdest encounter with her back in the 80s as my following tale (lifted from a previous Avalon posting) elucidates... Back in July 1982 I was sharing an appartment with a music journalist called Tim. The previous winter he'd been out of work and had taken on a Christmas Mail Delivery job as a temporary measure to keep the wolves from the door. His co-worker at the Post Office turned out to be Chris Jagger, brother of Avalon effigy Mick, and husband to .....none other than Kari-Ann Mueller (the delightful pin-up from the first Roxy album.) Now you're probably wondering "what's the brother of one of Britain's wealthiest men doing trudging the icy streets of Camden Town delivering Christmas cards ?" And I do not know the answer except to say that there has been some record of sibling rivalry in the press. This tale also contains an irony in the context of a later Roxy cover girl's defection to a Jagger. But back to my story. The following summer Tim and I decide to hold a Saturday night party with a "Naval" theme, and I was thrilled that Tim had invited Kari-Ann along with Chris. The night before the party we were hanging around the flat working on our outfits - for the record I was styling myself on the 12" single sleeve of The Associates' "Waiting For The Loveboat" - and there's a ring on the door. I am ironing my tunic standing in my pink sea-island cotton boxer shorts as Kari-Anne and Chris enter the room. They had come the wrong night. I stood there aghast. My adolescent dream-girl was now in my dreamhome, and all I could offer her was some unchilled cheap white wine and some pickled onions. She was wearing something fairly new romantic with a sash - not unlike our dear Kicki's website - and I still shudder at the recollection of her disdainful fairwell, saying they were unavailable the following night. At least the following did turn up to the party : Dave Stewart, Clem Burke (Blondie drummer) and a couple of guys from Madness. Timing. Life is all about timing. Martino (..aplogies for playing my back catalogue.) ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Bryan Ferry gained hair extensions, Phil extra beard and Paul and Graham got gaps in their teeth. I was only 7. How was I to know? My brother was rather upset because he always quite fancied Kari-Anne. But someone else has pointed out that the outtake pictures from this shoot (as featured in the box set) has some preferable poses that are far more fetching.
