The word has rich associations if you are familiar with the stories, but it may not translate well (pun intended) if you haven't read some of the myths. You can begin to read Malory's _Le Morte d'Arthur_ which are the stories of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table (wonderful stories) at http://www.blackmask.com/olbooks/mortarthur1.htm--it's in English, but I bet you'd be able to find a Norwegian translation somewhere. Avalon, the word comes from Avallach ("Apple Island" in welsh, I heard). This mythical place is where wounded Arthur was brought after the battle of Camlann. Morgane was waiting there. Since Arthur's grave has never been found, he is supposed to come back. At the beginning of the XII Century, the monks of the Abbey of Glastonbury started to look for Arthurs grave and immediatly clamed that they found it!!! The book, the "fogs of Avalon " also deals with this legend, the feminine side of the legend. One of Bryan's sons name is Merlin, the "Avallach" name comes up in the "Life of Merlin" book by Geoffroy de Monmouth ( 1135-1150), and of course, in the legend, it's Merlin's magic that enabled Arthur's birth. So, the cover of the Avalon Album is also very medieval fantastic, does anyone know why Bryan seem so interested in that stuff???? There is a concert hall in San Francisco called the "Avalon Ballroom," located at 1268 Sutter Street at Van Ness. As the song seems to be about dancing, maybe this was an original inspiration for the song, leading on to the album bearing that title with deeper resonance - Avalon is a mythical place of great legend, and maybe that's what the album is supposed to represent, as the final statement of perfection and "other worldliness" of Roxy Music. Having been to Glastonbury and read about the area, there is no doubt about how special it is, and how one can become influenced and obsessed by the place. Just my two cents re: "Avalon." I feel certain Bryan must be pulling this from Arthurian legend, especially with a son named Merlin! I am actually in the middle of reading the book " The Mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It's a marvelous book, an epic at 876 pages! The tales of Arthur just seem like something that would appeal to Bryan. They are mystical and full of drama, and yes, even some glamour. Not to mention the women of Avalon are strong, sensual creatures.... Anyway, in my mind Avalon has always been a place or state of mind equated with heaven or Nirvana (no, not Kurt Cobain). Apparently, it's a satirical look at Thatcher's Britain - no, seriously ! (At this point - a quick suggestion to Reecey that he skips at least the next paragraph - I don't want to be responsible for him bursting a blood vessel...) Sinfield has also written songs for Cher ('Heart of Stone'), Celine Dion, Cliff Richard (a Christmas single called 'Peace In Our Time'), Barry Manilow, Lulu, Agnetha Fältskog, Pete Cetera, Tony Hadley (ex-Spandex Bullett) and Roger Chapman. Of course Sinfield also wrote lyrics for ELP (from 'Brain Salad Surgery' up to the breakup following the awful 'Love Beach') and produced Italian band Premiata Forneria Marconi (whose keyboard player Flavio Premoli more recently recorded with Phil Manzanera). (OK Reecey, you can start reading again...) In all that time, Sinfield only ever made two albums under his own name - 'Still' (from 1973) and 'In A Land Of Clear Colours' (in 1979 - a 1,000 LP limited edition spoken-word record). 'Still' was reissued on CD a little while back (with two extra tracks) as 'Stillusion' and sounds mostly like the quieter bits of early Crimson (Sinfield is not, however, much of a singer !). 'IALOCC' (Sinfield reading a Robert Sheckley story to five minutes' worth of music by Brian Eno) was also issued on CD a few years ago. Sinfield has notoriously been at loggerheads with Robert Fripp for some years (nigh on 30 ?) and words have recently been exchanged over the Crimson back catalogue reissues (if anyone's interested in Sinfield's side of the argument, go to www.interx.net/~jgreen/RantingShaman.html ) Confusion will be my epitaph... 21st Century Schizoid Ive. n.p.
