Waiting in my mail box were 6 zillion e-mails from Avalon, boy have you lot been busy. It's good to see the two shows Bryan did were well received again and it's good to see Bryan has a good choice in Scottish football teams. Next time he comes to the Highlands fishing I'll have to convert him to being an Inverness Caledonian Thistle supporter. Famous For 2 Minutes 56 Seconds One night in Turkey I had one or two too many Raki to drink in a Karaoke bar and ......yip you've guessed it, I decided I was Bryan Ferry. Up I went on stage to do Virginia Plain. The music started di di di di RRRrRRRRR , my father worked in the coalmines too, but that's where my similarity with Ferry ended. As soon as I started singing (allegedly) I realised that a microphone and me are not a match made in heaven. My father once told me " you have a voice that would put a horse and cart off the road", how true he was. Off course the Raki helps me to think I can sing I just hoped the rest of the audience had enough Raki too. When I got to "...studebaker...." I realised that Bryan usually has the luxury of several thousand fans adoringly answering his question "....what's her name ?.." I somewhat felt I might have to finish the song off to the end, and as I expected , I did have to. The only people clapping were my 2 sisters and their husbands with my 2 children looking rather embarressed. I now know the Turkish for ."..what the f@#* was that..." I left the venue not surprisingly without any autograph requests and made our way up the street avoiding all the horses and carts that were strewn all over the pavements. I was at a Karaoke party in Glasgow (now there IS a notion) in January and a guest(?) did 'VP' - he was really good but I think it helped that I was the only other person in the crowd who knew all the words - and I didn't have to look at a telly screen (preen preen). Actually the guy next to me looked pretty terrified - more or less the same expression bystanders had at Tatton Park. For the record, my rendition of Irene Cara's 'Fame' though not having the artistic vision of VP certainly made everyone happy, or laugh, if that's the same thing. PS As a lifelong Celtic fan (sorry I was on holiday during this thread) I cannot convey the happy yelp I let out when I read earlier postings relating to the great man's taste. Hail Hail to Bryan. The 13th was the first night of our vacation, and it is only now that I finally have a chance to write. First of all, it was a pleasure meeting so many Avalonians. Reecey, Anton, Andy Mol, Han, and many others whose names are proving elusive in the wake of our long night - it was a real thrill to meet you all. After reading your words on a daily basis from across the Atlantic, it was wonderful to connect the names with the e-mails, and to be able to celebrate with you at the Re-Make/Re-Model show following the BF show. When we arrived at the BF show, Penny and I anxiously looked around to try to spot fellow Avalonians. However, shyness and fatigue (we were thriving on a 2.5 hour nap that we took immediately upon our arrival at our hotel - tough to sleep on the plane over) prevented us from finding any of you. That would soon change, however. First, a brief review of the show. We had previously seen the band in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 11/4/99. We also have the incredible Brussels video, along with the Boston and BBC CD's, so we have a bit of perspective. (Although not as much as many of you). That said, we thought that the Hague show was easily the best one to which we had we had been exposed. The band seems so comfortable now, and The Maestro himself truly seems to be having a good time. Speaking of the band, I would be negligent in my reporting if I did not say a few words about Lucy Wilkins. She was completely into the show from start to finish, singing along with the words, slapping her legs along with the beat...I honestly thought she was going to cry at the end of Bitter Sweet. As for her solo in Out Of The Blue, it was absolutely phenomenal!!!!!!!! I was worried that she was going to break her bow, she was playing so hard! For a few blissful seconds, we were all sucked into the eye of her musical storm - truly, truly wonderful. Many in the crowd, us included, gave her a standing ovation at the end of the song. (Watching the Brussels video now, she almost seems to be playing the solo in slow motion compared to the Hague show). Out Of The Blue was an obvious high point, as were Chance Meeting, The Only Face, Bitter Sweet, and Just One of Those Things. I thought that BF was singing with great confidence, and the band, whose role in the shows seems to be steadily expanding, just keeps getting better and better. As you have read before, toward the end of the show, the aisle leading to the right side of the stage was filled with Avalonians, and BF was openly acknowledging their presence. When Let's Stick Together started, all hell broke loose. Penny and I participated in our first-ever BF stage rush, and ended up just a few feet from the Maestro himself. I'm sure it seems kind of lame to the more experienced Avalonians, but for us to be so close to BF was very, very cool! The rest of the show was a delightful blur - Love Is The Drug and Virginia Plain as encores, with even the suited crowd (the vast majority of the crowd appeared to be business people who had attended a convention of some sort at the venue) straining toward the stage by the end. The "Sirens" had all let their hair down, BF removed his jacket, and everyone, band and audience included, basically just frolicked! I've never seen anything like it. After the show, we walked up to Johnny Reece, and asked him if he was, in fact, Johnny Reece. "I might be," he coyly replied. When we made it clear we were fellow Avalonians and therefore harmless, we were immediately embraced by a welcoming circle of Avalonians. Once again, it was a real thrill to meet everyone. We all reconvened at The Jungle, a small restaurant/bar on the beach adjacent to the North Sea, to go see Re-Make/Re-Model, the Dutch Roxy Music/BF cover band. One might ask how they could possibly follow in the footsteps of such a wonderful BF show, but those fears were quickly allayed. The area where one could actually see the band in The Jungle was extremely small, and it was immediately filled with Avalonians. As for the band itself? They were great! I thought they would be good, but they were much better than I had hoped. Ron Snelderweert, who did BF, was outstanding - his voice is very similar to BF's, and his delivery was impeccable - hand gestures, the unique BF dance style, even his facial expressions were right on target. He had clearly done his homework, and the results were great. As for the rest of the band, they were all solid, with the exception of "Andy Mackay" Leslie van der Heul - he was incredible!!! His sax solo during "A Song For Europe" was the best I have ever heard. I wasn't the only one who thought so - my wife ran up and hugged him afterwards! Also, at one point, I believe I remember Anton spinning around and around with his Camcorder as we all chanted "Leslie! Leslie! Leslie!" I'd love to see that tape! Finally, at some point during the show, somebody came up behind me and shouted into my ear "Who the **** is Andy Mackay?" I might not go that far, but Leslie was great, Ron was great, the whole stinking thing was great. We got to hear many songs that I wanted to hear that weren't in the BF show - "Do the Strand," "In Every Dreamhome a Heartache," "Ladytron," "2HB," "Re-Make/Re-Model", "More Than This," "The Thrill of It All," and many more. If you get a chance to see Re-Make/Re-Model, definitely do so. They're a great band, and really good guys, as well. The best part of the whole night was being able to share it all with the good members of Avalon. We really appreciate the warmth and friendship that you all showed us. It made a very special night even better. Hi Yawl: Last night as I was about to drift off into sleep, I happened to have the program EXTRA ( those in the states know this one) on the television. It's kind of a news-celebrity program that runs daily in the afternoon or evening depending on where you live. Anyway, guess who was the lead story? Yep, our Prairie Rose, Ms. Jerry. EXTRA had exclusive hightlights from Jerrys' debut in the Graduate. Apparently there WAS a video camera probably in the balcony. They showed Ms. Jerry in her featured scenes AND.... the scene where she is just getting into the sheets and taking off her bra! I kid you you not. Of course they blacked out the "fried eggs", but yes they were there in all their Big Country glory minus the Texas toast. There was mention of the reviews including the "wooden as a toothpick" remark. I liked that one. But, they said that there were crowds for the show. In fact if she continues to pull the crowds in there is talk of taking it to Broadway. Uh, yeah. It also turns out that Ms. Jerry beat out the likes of Goldie Hawn and Sharon Stone for the London role. Okay so she can't act, not yet anyway, and she is there for the marquee value, and most of this list hates her (???), but one had to admit she looks good for 44. Now that she is the "talk" of the town, and continues to be stylish, do ya think that a certain old bloke in leather pants might show up to witness the spectacle(s), incognito of course? Maybe he could get a backstage pass or wait at the end of the line, just in front of Paul Allen. Jas This program will rerun this weekend.
