NUDE NUDE NUDE This was all over the radio this morning, and this story comes from the BBC website. The articel has some pictures, but NOT those! Is she really only 44? http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/entertainment/newsid_860000/860564.stm Model Jerry Hall has received lukewarm reviews for her debut as Mrs Robinson in London stage show The Graduate. Hall, 44, took over the role from Hollywood actress Kathleen Turner, who caused a sensation by appearing nude in the role of the middle-aged seductress. But most reviewers were sceptical about her acting abilities - even if they were in awe of her brief nude scene. The Daily Mail's Quentin Letts said her acting was, at times, "as wooden as a toothpick". "The Texan acccent wobbled like a learner cyclist, her dramatic pauses sagged horribly and her range of emotions would not have discredited a retiring clam," he commented. But despite saying all he saw of the nude scene was "two fried eggs in the gloaming", he added that she looked "pretty damned amazing". The Mirror's Jessica Callan said Hall lacked "spark or passion" with co-star Josh Cohen, while the Daily Express's David Smith said "some might have found her performance a case of more style than substance". But he added she looked "at ease" during the play. Hall received a better reception from her former partner, Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who was in the audience. He was impressed by the production and particularly by Hall. He said afterwards: "She was good, eh?" Jagger, 57, was accompanied by one of Hall's closest friends Tharita de Serra - a friend from her early modelling days - who flew into Britain for the occasion. In preparation for the role, Hall has been on a tough regime of yoga and exercise and has been perfecting her stage craft with a voice coach. She has also cut much of the once waist-length hair for which she had become known. Her last stage appearance, in Bus Stop, also drew mixed reviews, and her predecessor, Turner, has reserved judgment on Hall's suitability for the role. One theatre-goer smuggled a camera into the auditorium to catch a glimpse of the naked star, despite a ban on photographic equipment and bag searches. The cameraman took a shot of Hall as she opened her towel 15 minutes into the show to reveal she was wearing nothing underneath. Staff at the theatre pounced and demanded he hand over the film - although shots of her do appear in The Sun, which describes her "raunchy" stage antics. The paper's Dominic Mohan added: "From my vantage point in row A, seat 20 in the dress circle, it could have been Jerry Springer." ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Were you spending your wages on records or clothes? Both, but later on I spent them on bicycle parts. I'd joined a racing club of the Tour de France sort, meaning these were not motmotorbikes. The bike thing was a scene I explored for about two years, beginning when I was fifteen. 1 bad to have the best bike, and the only way to do that was to send away for these special parts. As in mod culture, where you had to have exactly the right length of hair and type of shoe, in cycling there was only one sort of brake you could have, only one sort of ten-gear unit. You had to have a very short crew cut, a certain cap, short white socks, perforated black racing shoes, and tight-fitting black racing shorts. I was quite dedicated and used to do a lot of training after school. Were you any good at the sport? Good? I was utterly useless! [huge burst of laughter] Never any good at all. After cycling, tben, your next predilection was rock and roll? [Wide grin, shaking his bead] No, no. Next was rock-climbing. I formed a mountaineering society in my school when I was seven-teen. Four of us used to do our climbing in the Lake District, in the Cumbrians; they have some very good crags there. Also in Northumberland, near the famous Roman Wall which runs for some hundred miles or so. I did the climbing thing to the limit, with the whole Matterhorn aesthetic: camping out on various summits in mountaineering tents, dressed in leather boots and heavy corduroy breeches, smoking a clay pipe and reading poetry. Ridiculous. So where the hell was rock and roll when all this was going on? I really don't know. I think it was hardly there at all. The big thing was passing my exams and interview for university. But during the ten-week break between leaving school and going to university, as I was contemplating the usual building site/factory work stint, I bumped into this guy in the street who used to be in the old cycling club. He said, "Can you sing?" I said, "Sure I can sing!" [chuckles]on having never done it in my life. He said, "I've got a group. Do you want to get together with us?" So I went up and this fellow had aback-to-back fish and chips shop and hairdressing salon, and the band, the Banshees, was rehearsing in the back room. So I joined up with these guys, who were factory laborers who did this in the evenings, and we began playing an itinerary of ballrooms and work-men's clubs. We played R&B, Chuck Berry, all that, and the workingmen loved us. We finally graduated to a hip club in Newcastle, the Club An Go Go, a legendary place where Cream, jimi Hendrix, Captain Beefheart, and others played. Then it was time me to go to university, and I said good-bye and began a new chapter... It's a fairly low key release and isn't being backed by a TV promotion - I think it's just a means of further promoting the back catalogue and is presumably aimed at a new generation of listeners who may be hearing early Roxy for the first time when Street Life is used as a signature tune shortly - it can't be mere coincidence that the album ties in with this new drama series. Although Street Life was No.1 for (I think) 5 weeks and The Ultimate Collection only reached No. 6 I'm sure I read somewhere that the latter outsold Street Life, probably because the height of its chart success coincided with the Christmas market. That's why I said Slave To Love was performing chart wise the best since 1988 - i.e. The Ultimate Collection. Nevertheless, compared to everything that followed the album seems to be performing very well at this stage. Incidentally Jim Lawn mentioned recently that As Time Goes By had notched up sales in the UK of 140,000 so far - much better than the likes of Mamouna, Taxi and possibly Bete Noire(?). It will be interesting to see how Slave To Loves compares with this.
