(SNIP) I was in Sainsbury's (UK supermarket chain) and I noticed STL riding high in their chart for a mere £9.99. It reinforced to me what a housewife/supermarket shopper cd this is. Just pop it in your trolley/basket with your carrotts and baked beans! I don't want to start a debate on supermarkets and their role in music retail, but I wonder if it's prescence in the trolley accounts for the album doing so well. I know that these places are partly responsible for the likes of Celine Dion, M People and Michael Bolton selling loads (along with the other insipid music makers). The only good point about this is that at least Sainsbury's represent the Top 30 (or so?) albums, so you get the likes of Moby, Travis and Coldplay alongside your teen-pop (Britney, S Club 7, Steps) and the other names which don't deserve another mention!! Just another consumer product?? I am having computer problems I enumerate (perhaps Chris T's denunciation of Australia is correct and with lots of spiders. But least the sun shines and it is winter)....But thanks to all the friendly folk who helped me find my way around England in summer (sic).... PETWORTH * Martin's choice of restaurants is outstanding; * like a club meeting before the show all the people ever so friendly; * Martin's brown suit stole the show; * Richard's singing is indelibly etched on my soul; * Prof Reece and the elder Avalonians in their arm chairs (little did we know his ability to get to the front of every other show) * The string section were quite superb .... * Mr Ferry's singing seemed so much stronger (which was surprising as it was outdoors. I know he did a big outdoor show in Brisbane a long time ago. But I thought he would definitely be an indoors performer.). How wrong was I. TATTON PARK * The beauty of this site was overwhelming; an old country house on this incredible property. A magnificent lake running next to the concert area. It seemed somewhat cold to me but Chris T pointed out that this was a lovely summer's night. Could have fooled me... * Clearly Mr F knows how to pick his spots; * Many Avalonians Present; * Highlight being Hard Rain's (and the three versions Ferry went through in his warm-up---as well as Dance Away and Avalon. With the Band doing Virginia Plain solo) * Met Chris Turner, Ivor and Prof Reece again: it was agreed that there were four of us and five beautiful members of the string section. Sounded reasonable; alas, back to the pub to ease the pain with more champagne PETERBOROUGH This was a strange crowd and made the atmosphere a bit tense. A lot of farmer types seemingly unaware that at a concert people are supposed to have fun and dancing. There was no dance area or mosh pit: not that I wanted to crowd surf. * I was amazed at Mr F's power of concentration as some of the farmer types would not let people dance and kept moving their chairs to block people. * Although J Reece once again made it to the front to obtain more marvellous pictures (still cannot see how he took some of those pics). * Chris Turner pointed out that during Casanova one should stomp WARWICKSHIRE This concert was the most exciting. As I hopped into a cab from Cambridge to Warwickshire making it just on start time. * The crowd was huge; * Ferry really enjoying himself (seemed to have more fun as each show went on); * Camping it up to the women especially during Love Is the Drug; * Hard Rain's was sung even faster than before; * Alas it was too crowded to make it to the front but I had seen four shows which was not a bad effort. The highlight for me was to meet so many helpful and interesting people from the list (even given all the usual wars)....Mr Stockman can pick the best restuarants.....I suspect Castle Howard in Yorkshire will be huge......
