It is penned by Geordie footballing legend Jackie Charlton who names amongst others in the "Geordie Tribe" Cardinal Basil Hume, Alan Shearer and "Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music". Good to see auld Jackie is a Roxy man. For the record we are " a tribe which has been moulded by poverty, unemployment and hard times and then scattered across the face of the globe". Geordie men "make sure you buy a round and don't pretend to be politically correct in their treatment of ladies" - starting to sound familiar? They also " hand their pay packets straight over to their lasses who give them pocket money" which will account for why Ferry is so hard at work these days, Lucy's obviously cracked the whip. There is no denying he has a penchant for manly women in the transvestite/drag queen mode. The classic Roxy icons are all bewigged Amazonians nearing 6' (or whatever that is in metric money). We all know Amanda Lear is supposed to be a transsexual (separate thread?) the lovely Jerry could well have been a square jawed transvestite wrangler (leg wrestling and all). My money would be on the "girls" on Country life in a WWW bout. The trio of backing singers in the Hard Rain video are all men ( Eric Roberts being one, rumour has it Anthony Price is another) and of course the beautiful Billie Holliday pianist on the These Foolish Things video is again a man. Bryan just loves playing with image ( and soundscape) so any representation of females/males in his repertoire should be viewed with this in mind. However, one of the (female) stylists on the Mamouna video shoot was very disturbed by Ferry's attitude to woman (and frankly that is very strange iconography even for him) and called him "sick". Which might account for why Bryan wouldn't come out of his tent for the rest of the day. BTW, Martino is tipped to be staring in the next video resplendent in pin-stripe chiffon. See if you can spot him. I've just had a 'memory flashback' due to this footie chat. I used to occasionally see Stirling Albion (yes, I was the one) back in 73, due to the fact the girl I was crazy about (one Fiona Campbell) suddenly upped and moved with her family to Stirling. I used to go over from Glasgow some saturdays, and spent time waiting for her to finish her 'saturday job' by going to see the Albion. It was excruciating, but has led to me watching out for their results even now, in that pathetically 'loyal link with teen years' type of way. She was in love with none other than David Cassidy, so I bought 'Daydreamer' for her to smooth the passage of romance, if you'll excuse the expression. Some time later, I took FYP over one Saturday evening. "I don't like it" was her retort. My whole reasoning that 'Grey Lagoons' frankly kicked the arse of Cassidy fell on deaf ears. It could never last. We split shortly afterwards. Oh, for a 'Roxy girl' back in 73', the world would have been a much happier place. I just thought I'd share that with you. As confessed on my website profile I'm a West Ham supporter - actually of 34 years standing (what better reason than because I asked, at the tender age of seven and three quaters, immediately following the 1966 World Cup final, "who does that Geoff Hurst play for then?"). What could be better than standing in the crowd at Upton Park indulging in a rousing rendition of "I'm for ever Blowing Bubbles"? (Actually quite a few things- so don't bother commenting!) Come to think of it, what other team would have as a regular anthem a song that refers to dreams "fading and dying"? For the uninitiated (and I'm thinking mainly of our non-UK members here) West Ham are a soccer team (in the Premiership but not exactly top-flight) whose last major success was the FA Cup in 1980! Music and football? Well, I like both - and a friend I often go to matches with is actually a BF/RM fan (although possibly less so since I told him that he doesn't even come close Bryan's charisma, and certainly doesn't have his looks - they're of a similar age!), and I see absolutely no reason why the two should should be mutually exclusive.......(:-). Mind you, I did buy a copy of "Back Home" (the England World Cup squad song in1970) - but I was only 11 and still a little bit in love with Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters...... This is getting sadder by the minute.....
