But it will be hot & humid, you may say...for those of us in the Southeast & Southwest, it's gonna be hot & humid where we are anyway. Tom, I agree. It was a fantastic show. Bryan and the guys were on top form and were having a great time. The antics of Lucy et al during the jazz break halfway through the show was fun to see - they are having a great time on this tour. Bryan's voice, after a husky start, was on top form and he interacted really well with the crowd. Small details, but I like the extended harmonica solo in 'Let's Stick Together', together with the toot at the end (he did the same at Petworth). One thing that's really stood out during this tour (apart from the great band, and wonderful music) is the confidence that Bryan has in his own voice. No dedicated backing singers (which I think have spoilt all Bryan's tours from 1982 Roxy - on). Castle Howard can't come soon enough. Same for the English summer (cold and overcast, but at least the rain held off). Steve. p.s. my son Edward's first Ferry gig - he's only 3 months, but has in his little hand a ticket for Yorkshire! - -----Original Message----- From: thom.wallace@net.ntl.com To: Avalon Date: 23 July 2000 20:41 Subject: [AVALON] Blickling Hall. >In a word superb. > >Tom. > > > >___________________________________________________________________________ >Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing >selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! >To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: >unsubscribe avalon > ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Myself and Jocelyn met up early Saturday afternoon in deepest Hertfordshire, for a very civilised coffee, and awaited the arrival of Ivor and his flashy car for our trip to Blickling Hall. Usually we have to wait several hours for the 'highlights' of the day to begin, but Ivor had seen to it that celebrations began early. How's this for efficiency and kind forethought : situated beside our alotted seats for our journey, we each had our very own tube of Smarties. Cool ! It would of course be churlish of me to complain that they didn't have a 'red top', but this was more than made up for by opening them, and revealing the 'secret letter' beneath the top. It was an F. F for Ferry - I guess then I knew all would be ok. It was a much longer journey than anticipated - all those tiny little A and B roads eat up the journey time, though in the end we still had time to eat some alleged food on the way at a Little Chef, whilst being frazzled from directly above by electric pylons. Delightful. I have been known, in the past, as something of an ace navigatop/map reader - however, even I was a little troubled that the location of our hotel did appear at first to be too small to even appear on a map, which worried me a little. I had a reputation to keep up ! However, we arrived at Worstead around 5pm, plenty of time really, in this marvellous little Hotel (4 rooms !) - built, we found out later, in the late 1500s. This was real Tudor, no mock nonsense for us, you know. A great little place. Nice work Jocelyn on the hotel detective front. The owner was really helpful and friendly, and had even drawn us a little map (doglegs included - it's amazing what keeps us amused) of the shortest way to Blickling. After dodging the local 'rockers', we were on our way. We parked up in a little car park that the rest of the world seemed to miss completely - easy access, and, as we discovered later too, no problems getting out either. We made our way to the very front, just for a change. (joke.) I don't know what happened to the previously promised hot weather, it had deserted us again. No matter, Jocelyn produced a little picnic of strawberries, and we had about three quarters of a bottle of champers to quaff, the remaining quarter being used to decorate the people next to us when it was opened. Nils & Gang did their usual little jazzy warm up, then that bloody mambo tape went on again. Nice to meet Tracy from Lincolnshire, who came over for a chat after recognising the odd mugshot (er, mine) from Kickis Site. There was an awful lot of 'edging slowly forward' at this point. Our attention was, luckily, taken away from the tape as we kept ourselves amused by watching the various 'I must get backstage' antics of a girl with long blonde hair. She must have tried for a good hour or so. More of her 'ejected' antics later. Kasey Chambers was next, with a very country-tinged set. Ivor was so impressed before she even took the stage, he bought the cover. Unfortunately, he paid for the CD too. (Sorry, Ivor). At this point we met Anne-Isabelle, who had travelled over from Frankfurt for the gig (and Ragley Hall too). Anne-Isabelle seemed to have got this 'edging forward' bit down to a fine art, and she was definitely the catalyst for the big push. In a milli-second, there we were, up against the barrier. Ah, home again. Kasey was doing her last number. Hi too to Tom, and friend from Glasgow, and Jim. We all ended up camped at the front. Excellent. (continued...) ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Julia baby, sorry, Julia Thornton with the Harp Solo, followed by the Quartet, and the Band. Into TWYLT and once again we were up and running. Nice to see 'Sunset' reintroduced - a full set tonight. The first few numbers were interspersed with various shouts from the blond girl mentioned earlier, such as the adoring 'You sexy git, Bryan' and many chants of Bryans name during the first few songs, much to the growing annoyance of the quartet, and some of the audience. I think she was removed, as she disappeared shortly afterwards. Bryan and the band were on great form. Lucy W. and Natalia being particularly, spectacularly, animated at times. When they kept gyrating into each other during 'Street Life', the incredulous look on Bryans face was priceless. Bryan was so enjoying camping it up with the crowd that he'd forgotten where he'd left the Mic stand at one point, in the middle of JOOTT, having to suddenly rush half way across the stage to grab it and complete the lyric, laughing all the while. I've seen many shows this tour, but this was the most pulsating, powerful version of OOTB so far. Lucy W's priceless solo too, of course - and don't you just love it when all the girls stand up for the climax ? (excuse the expression). New Bassist (Don Hutchinson ?) did really, really well. A friend of the rhythm section, we were informed. A great replacement for Zev Katz. Other major highlights, a wonderful Enrico solo for 'Face', as ever, and 'Hard Rain' - again, the best one I've heard yet, wonderfully powerful. Great solos from the Band during the usual 'intermission' too. They were really up for it. Miss the last one at Castle Howard at your peril. 'Virginia Plain' heralded the donning of shades by myself, Jocelyn and Ivor - it's a golden rule now. Take note, Castle Howard attendees. Bring your shades for this one or be damned. All too soon, as ever, it was all over. Spectacular fireworks to the backing of Prokofiev, and we were on our way to the beer tent for a quick livener. Anne-Isabelle joined us as we gave her a lift back to her hotel. We took the wrong road after dropping her off, but soon managed to get back on track. When we eventually got in the front door of the hotel (slight key problem) we sat back in the large Tudor lounge, sipping Tea, and discussing the days events. Very civilised ! We all made it down for breakfast (miracles never cease) and then decided we'd visit Blickling Hall, gardens, house, everything. Really amazing place, and we had a really nice lunch there too. Some of the 'modern art' exhibits were great, but others caused us some amusement (sorry, artlovers) but little bags of spices hanging from trees and metal flowers stuck in a pond does not a classic make. However, the paintings, tapestries etc in the house itself were stunning. As for the 'outside art', we did spot some ourselves, namely 'Bin in Cart' and my favourite, 'Dead Fish in Pond'. I guess you had to be there. We also commented on the availability of coarse fishing, whereby we stood by the pond and shouted "call yourself a trout, you bastard". It just goes to show we can keep ourselves amused, if we have to. Back to Ivors first for some essential musical listening, and then we went our separate ways. I now sit at home, memories of the night before very fresh in my memory, desperately trying to concentrate on them instead of my left knee which has blown up like a balloon. A very, very painful one, causing me more than a little worry, and after hobbling about a bit today, I now cannot walk. Docs in the morning, I guess. Must be fit for Castle Howard ! Hi, and nice to meet you, to both Tracy and Anne-Isabelle. Seems 'the clan' is growing. What we refer to as 'Avalonia Heaven' is gathering pace...
