I must have been standing very close - I wasn't quite quick enough to make the front row, but two rows back right in front of the piano was pretty good! Sorry Ididn't meet any of you. These shows just get better and better. Usual build up, including the latino/mamba on the PA early on (sorry, Reecey!) - the band playing their jazz set early on (no Enrico), followed by Kasey Chambers (I don't normally like country music, but she was good - and got a special thanks from Bryan early in his set). On to the now familiar opening, and again he included Just One of Those Things fairly early on - so good to see it back. In fact most things were restored (Only Face, Avalon, Sunset, etc etc). I'm trying to think what he *didn't* do (no September Song or Falling in Love again). Full version (I think!) of Hard Rain - and Bryan seemed to have all the words in front of him, just in case! A sticky moment at the start of Carrickfergus when Nils didn't appear to be plugged in, but it didn't faze our man. The girls seemed to be having more fun than ever, if that's possible - I swear if their smiles become any broader, they'll burst! Lucy W teasing Colin Good, Julia with blonde locks flowing (plus shades of course!) for Virginia Plain. Brilliant! Colin Good is becoming a real star - and was introduced as "the maestro" by Bryan. The only "sad moment" as Bryan put it, was that it was Zev's last gig (I knew he wouldn't be at Blickling, but obviously now not at Castle Howard either). And Bryan? Posturing, flirting, teasing, oozing sex appeal ..... It's been said before but it was all there again in bucketloads last night. The way his confidence has grown on this tour is wonderful to behold - this is a man in his prime!! The old white tux made its now customary appearance, but was dispensed with from LITD onwards. Peeling off the jacket before our very eyes (to great cheers!), tossing it casually onto the piano, he rolled up the sleeves of the crisp white dinner shirt and clearly meant business! A rousing finale followed, LITD, Plain and Strand - and the fireworks were bang (pardon the pun) on schedule this time. Someone has *got* to record these outdoor shows for posterity (is this still happening at Castle Howard?). They are amazing and (dare I say it!) the Paris video is going to look tame by comparison to these exhibitions of sheer exuberance. As Chris said a week or so back - anyone wavering over Castle Howard, then waver no more. These concerts are a treat rarely experienced. Hi Folks, Ferry had done it again. For the third time on this tour I have had to revise my 'Best Ferry Gig Ever' First that wonderful show in Paris, then Petworth's splendour, and now BF upped the ante again at last night's superb Ragley Hall show. It wasn't just that I had front-row centre (I won the cavalry charge), or the knowledgeable Midlands crowd (singing along like a soccer crowd) or the pleasant cool summer evening and atmosphere. Not even that amazing band. It was Ferry, who was completely in command in a masterful display. The voice is just not an issue any more, it is 100% reliable, and this allowed the great man to just enjoy himself, flirting and fooling around with the crowd. At the start of Carrickfergus, while the roadies were fixing a tech problem which blanked Nils' guitar, a female Brummie voice roared "Oi luv yow Bri-yin!" Ferry's left eyebrow raised a la Roger Moore and a wicked grin crossed his face. His stagecraft is amazing, and no-one failed to receive that familiar smile. The guy just enjoyed himself. Footnotes: No Enrico! Yes, no Enrico! However this was not an issue as one Mike Henry, looking like a long lost Chuckle Brother, filled his Italian wing-tips amply. Dare I say that the trumpet solo on The Only Face sounded even sweeter than Enrico's? Ferry also announced that this was Zev Katz' ("our friend from New York") last night of the tour. Very, very good attendance, and generally an older crowd than other gigs, with the older songs like Sunset and Chance Meeting being well received. Only downer - overly officious security crew stopping video filming - completely unnecessary, and a big distraction from the gig for us near the front. No surprises in the set list, but particularly storming versions of Hard Rain and Virginia Plain. Ferry left centre stage during Hard Rain to flawlessly perform the complex last verse. No September Song was no disappointment for me, it really spoils the flow of the set. It was my pleasure to once again share the evening with Steve Swift and Diane Whateley. To the others - sorry I missed you, but you chose a great gig to attend. It doesn't get any better than this. I only went on last minute impulse, and I'm so glad that I did. This was a great set from start to finish. I've seen seven gigs on this tour - ordinary - (RAH), great (Golders, RFH, Elton Hall) and this was the best of the very best. I just don't want this tour to end. Now how can I get a ticket for Blickling...? Ragley was brilliant (see my earlier post), and, I agree with Chris, better than Petworth (which I didn't think could be improved upon). I'd meant to mention the raised eyebrow and wicked grin (Bryan's expression was priceless!) so thanks for reporting it. He just oozed confidence and arrogance (in the best sense of the word). Not looking forward to the flight from Heathrow, truth be told. I've never been that keen on planes. People talk about 'fear of flying' - but that is utter nonsense, because it's crashing I'm scared of. Spent the best part of an hour reading the turgid in-flight info mags, pretending to be oh-so relaxed. I wasn't. One night in Amsterdam, not enough time obviously, but thought I should look around the day before the Gig. A quick evening spent scooting around town to see what was on offer, which was beer, food, and a lot of women posing rather provocatively behind windows with red lights shining upon them. I noted that not one of them looked in any way whatsoever even towards 1% like a harpist, so decided to stick with the beer and food. Much of the evening spent with a bunch of people chatting in a Bar, some locals, some from Denver, others from NZ. They'd all heard of Bryan Ferry, except 2 of the NZ camp. They know better now. 13th July : The Hague: This struck me as a rather strange place at first, very hard to get my bearings, as there didn't appear to be an actual 'town centre' - more of a big town which has been spread out, if you get my drift. I instructed a taxi to find my little hotel, and went off to explore for a while. It's Gig number 12 of the Tour coming up for me, and I did wonder if it would be a return to a 'Venue' type set, as opposed to the changes that were made re the recent outdoor events. I was more than happy to be back on the Continent. I love it here. I arrived early at the Congres Centrum to discover that Andy Mol was not propping up the Bar, which meant of course that he had not arrived yet. Within an hour or so, the 'Dutch Contingent' began to drift in. Nice to see you all again so soon after Petworth. Andy Mol duly arrived, and said "is there a Bar" ?, which was not a shock to me. Within an hour, we all took our seats, and began to relish the thought of another fine evening. One nasty moment though, as the Quartet appeared, but no Julia, at first. Thanks to the Dutch for their obvious friendly concern, turning around, patting me on the shoulder, giving me 'don't worry Reecey' type looks, helping me through this most distressing 30 seconds or so for me, before she duly appeared. First the Solos, then into TWYLT, and we were off... And here we all were once again, into the typical 'venue' type set. No major changes at first, though JOOTT appeared early, and Sunset was dropped. One point of concern : though Bry and the Band were clearly having a great time, his voice was suffering, extremely nasal, the odd 'crack' - clearly just getting over a heavy cold. I fully expected a couple of songs to be dropped because of this. Happily though, an amazing 'The Only Face' with the usual brilliance of Enrico. Special note for Lucy Wilkins, whom I have never seen more animated during the OOTB solo - I swear at some point I thought she would strut out to stage centre during this. Blistering. Wonderful. Oh Yeah, whilst not being a particular fave for me, worked really well this time, and Slave was particularly powerful. The first few rows of seats were right up against the stage, and I did wonder how we would squeeze in there when the 'rush stage front' occured. I needn't have worried. It began early too, during 'Jealous Guy'. Avalonia Heaven once again. Patricia was happy, at one point it seemed Bry was singing directly to her. Quite how we all got directly to the front from the various points from which we were originally situated, with physically climbing over people and seats in the process, I really have no idea. I think they have copied 'the Reecey manouevre' which I mistakenly thought I had copyright on. At the end of LITD, a slim girl with dark hair (very sexy !) turned to me and said "Hey, I know you - you are on the Internet". (A further 2 people I hadn't ever seen before approached me before leaving the Venue, saying the same thing to me - so Kicki - boy does your Site work wonders ! These people may not be 'profiled' or even post regularly, but they check every detail of what you've done - Cool !). Virginia Plain ended the party - no Strand this time. Brilliant though - and you know, the evening had only just begun... Scheveningen beckoned. The Remake/Remodel gig at 'The Jungle' down on the beach front. We've all been talking about a 'convention' that should be held for us all, well, this already was one. This was amazing. This Band are so wonderful. We arrived near the beginning of the first set (of 3). And, here's the thing - and this is true, I swear - at times they reminded me, so much, sound wise, of Roxy a-la 73. Look away from the stage, listen in intently, and you'd swear that voice in the distance was Ferry from way back when. Don't know the name of the Sax player - but is he Mackay's son or what ? Great stuff. So many people said Hello (sorry, I really can't remember all your names - the Beer was really kicking in by now) but many, many were picking us Avalonians all out from pics and profiles from Kickis Site once again. I can't begin to describe what a great time we all had. We were all positioned stage front, singing, shouting, through all the Roxy/Ferry numbers, from all eras, and Avalonia Heaven was remade/remodelled for the second time in one evening. Great to meet you Ron - a splendid, marvellous Gig. Hi to Alan and Penny, who travelled over from Pennsylvania to attend both tonights Gigs too. Han, absent from earlier on, appeared as if by magic later on, to take up his position stage front. Hi Daniela, nice to meet you, did you realise you were marrying a budding Spielberg ? - I speak of Anton of course (hey - send me a copy of all the footage please !). It really was a marvellous night all in, and no doubt there are many drunken pics shortly to follow. I took quite a few at the RM/RM gig, will let you know the results. Much chat about more of our Dutch contingent considering attending Castle Howard now - it's a must - don't miss it, it really will be a major party. Be there ! You know you'll regret it if you miss it... We really must find a way of getting this Band over to the UK shores for a Gig or 2, maybe as part of a 'convention' type thing, which we all spoke about on the night, and I'll post more about those ongoing discussions tomorrow. I vaguely remember getting back to my Hotel sometime after 3 am in the morning (thanks for getting me back there, guys !) and I did wonder how on earth I would manage to be up for 9am to get my connection for my travelling forward to Bruges the next day. I didn't. I awoke sometime after 10am, and it was quite a shock for me, wandering into my en-suite, to discover I had just the one head, as I clearly had about 4 headaches. No matter, this is what Anadin Extra and copious amounts of coffee were made for, and I set off. July 14, Brussels / Bruges : The journey was quite pleasant, truth be told, made all the more enjoyable by the fact I listened back to some of the RM/RM Gig that I had managed to catch some of on MD the night before. By some bizarre quirk of fate I managed to get both my connections within 2 mins of arriving on the platform each time (fluke !), and I found myself in wonderful Bruges around 4pm. Far too damn early to meet the people whom I was working with the following day, so strolled around a while, MD on, reliving the gig from Scheveningen. The others arrived late evening, and I bored them silly with tales of the previous night. I guess they're getting used to it by now. July 15, Calais, Radio 6. I've never felt less like working. The previous few days had caught up with me, and to say I really didn't want to work was something of an understatement. Also, I was annoyed I wasn't at Ragley Hall, which directly clashed with my show in France. Still, I can't complain, as good old Radio 6 had paid for my trip over and sponsors had forked out for hotels anyway, which enabled me to attend The Hague in the first place. Waxed lyrically on air about 'This Love', played it and a live 'Chance Meeting' from GG, and late on aired Remake Remodel (the song by the Band) from the Scheveningen Gig. A listener had sent a Vid of the Paris gig (aired on Paris Premiere channel recently) to Radio 6 as a prezzie for me, nice thing to do. They know me well. Finished the show with YPS. Predictable or what ? Well, these things have to be done. Staggered back to the Holiday Inn sometime after 5am this morning, to grab some sleep before the journey home today. Back home, after 5 days, at 4pm this afternoon. Knackered. Happy. Blickling Hall and Castle Howard in my sights... Tara... The LBC Radio thing came from a customer of mine, I have now discovered, who not only loves the book, but loves the shop, and the rather forthright opinions therein (you know the sort of thing - signs up saying 'No Celine Dion Fans' etc etc...) He's also an engineer at that very station. Certainly there will be similarities then, but that is true of any shop of this kind. The book itself was published in 1995, written mostly in 91 - 94. My current shop didn't even open until January 1995, (though my first one was open 93-94, it was certainly very different to the one described in the book). This all started when the book became really popular, and many people liked the sarcastic humour of it, and started to first-guess where the inspiration came from. Where I am located, Crouch End, is a place where many writers, actors, musicians, media people etc do live, (and where the main character of the book lives) and a great buzz went around about the book at the time, and I had at least a dozen customers asking if we were the 'Championship Vinyl' from the story itself. I didn't have a clue what they were talking about, and had to go buy the book myself to find out. It's a great book, and frighteningly accurate of the opinions, humour, and bias of this type of working world. However, there are major differences. A good friend of the author, Nick Hornby, has said it is a hotch potch of experiences and stories from a range of shops, of which mine is, apparently, just one. The rumour is that the main character idea (name of Rob) came from an old friend of Nicks, last seen owning a shop in Camden (north London) called Out On The Floor, which I believe has now changed hands several times anyway. What LBC needed was a quick story for their news item about the upcoming film, so their engineer provided one. The guy who interviewed me clearly knew nothing about the book/film anyway. Do remember that 24 hour news stations have a lot of time to fill with nothing, and will pontificate, exaggerate ad infinitum to fill the airtime. Still, nice to be mentioned, I guess. As for the film itself, I won't be going to see it, and that is on solid advice from a range of my listeners, all from the USA, who had read the book first, then seen the film. "It doesn't transfer over to the USA well" is their battle cry, and, as they are from the States, I guess they know what they are talking about (in the movie, the Shop is based in Chicago, not London, so the sarcasm of English music humour has been altered dramatically). By all means read the book though - at times it is really very, very accurate, and very funny. I guess you've got to be a real 'music and vinyl head' to appreciate it though.
