Tom's heartfelt defence of his mate is understandable although like KB I find it strange that he should thank Jim on-list for letting him see some private videos. (By the way I'd like to give a big big thanks to my dry cleaner for getting that soup stain out of my tie.) Tom, Richard and, presumably, Jim, have dismissed this community as largely irrelevant in the scheme of things. We have around three hundred people whereas the Information Service has, what ?, between five and ten thousand. My take on this argument is that we have amongst us over three quarters of the hardcore fans. Those who own most of the released material (and a fair amount of unreleased stuff) those who attend the gigs, those whose partners despair of not being able to find a tape in the car that doesn't have "Simon Puxley : Executive Director" on the jewel-case. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't most punters contact the Info Service having seen the address on the record sleeve ? Or a flyer beside the CD with "if you'd like more information on Bryan Ferry put your name and address on this card." (Don't hold your breath.) My point is that for the cost of a stamp you can find out something about that handsome old guy who sings on the Honda ad. This act is different from going on-line each day to find out if its Alice Retif reciting the poetry on the outro of This Love - is it ?, what Eno's new installation is like, how a 16 year old relates to ATGB, which songs (that prat) Martino thinks are attributable to Ferry's undiminished obsession with Jerry Hall, where to meet cyber-friends at gigs, how to access Kicki's wonderful picture archive, and, of course, how to get hold of rare material. Avalon, then, is a vibrant community containing most of the Roxy/Ferry cognascenti. The Info Service and the BF website are amateurish operations and, in my opinion, do a disservice to their subject. On a personal level I have a infinite capacity to forgive. Yet if any newcomers suspect that this unedifying spat is about ego then the following should be considered : Jim Lawn let it be known, following some sharing of unreleased material within our community, that Bryan would now "never do a convention," he would be "more distant to fans," (remember RAH) and clearly passed on the impression that members of Avalon were profiteering from distribution of bootlegs. More than one person has anonymously off-list mailed me to say that my spoof of a telephone conversation between BF and JL was uncannily close to the mark. Tom or Richard suggested that Jim's smearing of Avalon was a reflex action to all the sniping and name-calling. If that's the case he should apologise for his damaging remarks. And put the record straight with his employer. I didn't know Jim was standing next to me at Petworth and I can understand you thinking that's ironic. Truth is I'd love to say Hi, buy the old bugger a drink and put all these problems behind us. Given his careless remarks about this community, however, I would be extremely wary of what I divulged. Why did he chose to air his claim on bryanferry.com? Would it not have been more appropriate to address this issue within the forum Avalon? Also, and of more importance, how did this unreleased material escape the Ferry camp? With regards to Mr. Lawn not posting directly to Avalon list because of other obligations, it may be prudent for him to reevaluate his commitments and to learn how to delegate responsibility. Beside, it should take less time for Mr. Lawn to compose a post to the list instead of relying upon another individual to make notes and post for him. More over, I believe his artificially maintained distance and inaccessibility to Avalon list members is off-putting to begin with, especially in light of the fact the he has made a public and very grave unsubstantiated accusation aimed directly at our character. I await his direct apology to the list. Should he choose to be not forthcoming, I will be left (sadly) with a negative opinion of the person, whereas I am currently neutral on Mr. Lawn. I think list members would no longer engage in JimBash should he set things right with an honest apology. We all make errors. The difference between men is a matter of personal character and integrity and the ability to admit to their error. A final jab, Tom. I am not disturbed by the presence of previously unknown material. I fully expect the everything Bryan Ferry has performed in every venue in which he has performed has been recorded and should be in his possession. It would disturb me if a comprehensive record did not exist - how else could one reliably assess any gig in a myriad of terms without the audio and or video record? It matters not should the record be one that was intentionally staged, with an eye toward release, versus recordings that were made for evaluative, information gathering. Not too painful, was that Tom? I'm more a kidder than a jabber. Thanks for listening, and for persevering the foregoing (I would air my concerns directly to Mr. Lawn, had I the means.). You do take a good deal of heat, Tom. My best wishes to you and yours, K.B.Porter PS. I found this composition in the tray. I wrote it and promptly forgot to send it! Can you honestly say that you know everybody on this list well enough to say that there is not the slightest chance that this may have happened? > More than one person has anonymously off-list > mailed me to say that my spoof of a telephone conversation between BF and JL > was uncannily close to the mark. That's as may be, but then more than one mailed me off list to say that they thought it was in bad taste. What has this to do with anything that has been discussed over the last three or four days? Or are you just trying to show how witty you think you were. > Tom or Richard suggested that Jim's smearing of Avalon was a reflex action > to all the sniping and name-calling. If that's the case he should apologise > for his damaging remarks. And put the record straight with his employer. Are you sure your name isn't really Arthur, wasn't he charged with the defense of Avalon? Stop being so high handed, what damage was done to the list by Jim Lawn asking that his suspicions be posted to the list members? I really do hope that this will be laid to rest now. The next six to twelve months should be quite interesting as a Ferry fan, a new album, what happens to the unreleased material, the chance of a box set and the continuing talk of an RM reunion so why start all the bickering again. The back catalogue has been doing very well since the tour started in the UK for obvious reasons. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org]On Behalf Of KB Porter Sent: 12 July 2000 10:56 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: Re: [AVALON] Day 1 sales. Dear Rob: A hint. Please! Nod your head once if STL reached number one, two times if number two... Are you still nodding? What? I can't see you - darn, you forgot to switch the camera on, again? Oh well, good try. Nice to hear the album is doing ferrlish well by HMV standards. Does anyone have info on the US release date please? Called MediaPlay today & they said it was a tentative August 15 release. In fact it's so tentative that a copy cannot even be ordered yet. You've probably discussed this & I wasn't paying attention, but would you please pass on any info, or even let me know if it can be ordered online? Thanks so much!
