Great performance - and at least Bryan was on early so we didn't have to sit through the rest of the assorted ragbag of "stars"! I know I shouldn't be by now, but I am still stunned by how good our hero's voice is live. I'm sure Ronan Keating mimed and I'm told by a reliable source who watched the show to the end that Status Quo did too! I've already re-watched Bryan's performance several times since on video. Dear All, A few people have suggested that Ronan Keating's performance on Jim Davidson's "variety" show last night was mimed. Sorry guys, but I'm pretty sure he was singing live (although the band was miming) - as the fade out came he was still singing and only stopped to say 'Thank you' to the still-screaming teenybopper contingent (not a dry seat in the house...) Which merely serves to demonstrate what a refreshingly charisma-free performer he is - not out-of-tune or even irritatingly idiosyncratic, just bland and insubstantial. Even amongst his peers (a pretty crowded field), he seems to be a truly forgettable singer - all the notes were there but not one jot of emotion nor a hint of phrasing was to be heard in the entire lifeless song. I was pleased to hear the applause that Bry got for 'Falling...' but 'LST' or 'Hard Rain' *really* would have blown the little sugar-plum fairy (or should that be Sidhe ?) clean off the stage and down the road... Regards, Ivor. n.p. Altan - 'Island Angel' (now, if it's Irish people singing you want to hear...!) ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Well I'm not long back from another very interesting day of music at Lawn Towers. I was treated to an early listen to the working mixes of Bryan's version of "Don't Be Cruel" which is destined for the Sun Records tribute album. This is a fine cover of the song made famous by Elvis. The backing track is very true to the original recording and features Scotty Moore and Mark Knopfler on guitars while the backing vocals have still to be added. Bryan's vocal performance is clear and very enjoyable, I could really get to like this track in a big way. I don't know when the release date for this album has been scheduled for, but if the other tracks are as enjoyable as Bryan's then it will be an interesting addition to the collection of those of us who enjoy music from the earlier days of rock. Another interesting piece that I was given a look at was a recording of Bryan performing "Sonnet No. 18" live from Poznan in Poland from May of last year. The only word I can think of to describe this is brilliant. I can only hope that this is considered for the box set when it finally appears. This was a guest appearance at a concert conducted by Michael Kaman and Bryan also performed Avalon, Jealous Guy and Let's Stick Together. I never knew that Bryan had performed the Sonnet live and it may well have been the only time that he has so a big, big thanks to Jim for letting me have a look at this. There is a chance of Bryan playing a one off show in Hanover later in the year. I think that it will be a tie in to the Expo 2000 exhibition that has been running there. The release of the Roxy Music Early Years album has been put back about three weeks so that it can tie in with a new drama series called "Street Life", no points for guessing what the title track will be. Once again we spoke about organizing a mini get together of the scottish fans for later in the year with an eye to looking at some rare video footage, listening to some interesting archive material and generally having an a good if slightly tipsy time. Basically it all depends if Jim can fit it in with his work commitments so I'll let you know more details when and if they are available. Cheers, Tom. ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" !
