Bryan is back in a way I wasn't sure we'd ever see again. As has been said elsewhere, he is confident, poised, healthy, happy and inspired once more. ATGB was in itself a very courageous move, which at the time many doubted (Virgin UK would not release it remember). I've always loved it, but never thought it would help get him back to this extent. The tour (& associated TV specials), however, has been revelatory. The whole set, costumery, arrangements etc have been different and winning. I never thought I'd see Chance Meeting again....let alone Bitter Sweet, Sunset, Street Life (Avalon Ballroom: listen to the swagger in the vocal). In the UK alone, I have had the pleasure of seeing shows in small halls (BBC Golders Green), mediums (RFH, Fairfield), big (Royal Albert), and stately home outdoors with a picnic (Petworth, only 4 miles from Balleygrand...or BF's home). Things are still on the way up. The set mix is getting a little poppier for Summer outdoors - but the versions are great. A white tux even...to complement a very good year for tailoring. And we all know that there really is a lot of new and covered (or should that be ready-made) material in the can. Indeed I suggest that BF may be on the verge of a significant comeback in Europe which will be artisticly and commercially recognised. For me, I think it's fine as it is just to see him brimming with belief again. It has also been a very good year for Avalonia. The productions have been superb. The socials have been fun. I have had the pleasure of making some new friends and drinking/eating partners. People from several nationalities have got together time and again to celebrate. There have been some cracking postings - and Avalon is always the place to hear it first. To top it all, I was also lucky to hitch a lift with Bryan after the Croydon Show in a mini-cab... Actually, ATGB went in at #16, week ending October 30 and fell to #37 the week ending Nov. 6. This confirmed by Q magazine's chart in the January 2000 issue, which included the following blurb on p 32 under the rude header "No One Cares!" "Six years ago, Bryan Ferry released a covers LP, Taxi, and celebrated as it went to Number 2. However, his new album of '30s standards squeezed only 10,500 sales out of an increasingly indifferent public, in spite of a major ad campaign in the print media. The title-track was also A-listed at Radio 2, and Ferry has recently performed at NetAid and on Later. The album's 21-place fall in the second week of release follows the same pattern as the efforts of another '70s star, David Bowie, whose 'hours...' album is at Number 74 after only five weeks."
