I followed it's progress in Music Week (music retailers trade >mag). I do get out and I do have friends, honestly! Actually, ATGB went in at #16, week ending October 30 and fell to #37 the week ending Nov. 6. This confirmed by Q magazine's chart in the January 2000 issue, which included the following blurb on p 32 under the rude header "No One Cares!" "Six years ago, Bryan Ferry released a covers LP, Taxi, and celebrated as it went to Number 2. However, his new album of '30s standards squeezed only 10,500 sales out of an increasingly indifferent public, in spite of a major ad campaign in the print media. The title-track was also A-listed at Radio 2, and Ferry has recently performed at NetAid and on Later. The album's 21-place fall in the second week of release follows the same pattern as the efforts of another '70s star, David Bowie, whose 'hours...' album is at Number 74 after only five weeks." Even though it spent most of the time in the lower reaches of the chart, remember this is a time of greatly increased sales, with CDs lower in the charts invariably shifting in quantities that would have them placed far higher in the chart at other times of the year. When it re-appeared in the chart following Bryan's appearance on the National Lottery it had been certified gold (60,000 units). The last thing I heard it was nudging close to 100,000. I imagine it quietly surpassed this figure long ago. Not sure how much Taxi and Mamouna sold but the former was certified silver around the time of the first two hit singles. I'm sure Jim mentioned a while back that ATGB had easily outsold both of these albums taken together. It's also seen by the record company as a successful album in many territories outside the UK, especially in Scandinavia hence the release of STL in Norway and Sweden ahead of everywhere else and repeated visits by Bryan there.
