["Han Snijders en Willy v/d Geest] [AVALON] Update : summer concerts ["Johnny Reece" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Can't Let Go - Longish Post Alert I agree with Robert's sentiments almost in their entirety, whilst sharing Colleen's irritation at the repeated re-issue of back catalogue material at the expense of new releases. There's just one thing I would take issue with, the suggestion that ATGB is one of the Maestro's best sellers. If chart performance is anything to go by, this is not the case. From memory, ATGB reached only number 57 in the UK, and spent a handful of weeks in the listing. Ferry's previous "worst" performance was the virtual compilation album 'LST' which reached no. 19 and spent 5 weeks in 1976(in a Top 50 chart now expanded to a Top 100.) Even the much maligned 'Taxi' got to number 2. (a full UK chart rundown is available at www.roxyrama.com under 'history.') BTW, the compilation albums, whilst unimaginative, have had huge commercial success. Whilst I accept that there are more albums sold now (to the detriment of the singles market) I would love to see some figures to support the claims that ATGB is a big seller, although I've no wish to decry it's achievements, not least of which is to bring the Cool Ruler back to public attention. A very good point. 12 months ago I was very wary of what he was capable of, and I had to really think hard about whether I wanted to buy ATGB and go to the RFH last December, but being on this list has reminded me and reinforced to me how much he still has to offer, and made me re-evaluate all the stuff I'd written off when I though he'd lost it. But really, it's how far he has come BACK in the last 12 months. Being active means his profile has risen again, and all those sleeping fans have awoken and realised what's happening. It's now up to him to maintain this status and build on it by getting new stuff out every 12-18 months. And I'm sure he's up to it, he just needs a catalyst to keep him motivated, whoever that may be. So long as chart action and commercial success aren't his motivations. People are rarely driven purely by financial gain. For some proper insight into human motivation, I would urge you to study the work of Abraham Maslow, Frederick Herzberg, Elton Mayo, Douglas McGregor or Rensis Likert, all of whom suggest that other factors, such as the need for social interaction, a desire to succeed or a wish to improve on previous performance are all prime (or primal) motivating factors. I'm sure that the years of research put into these studies don't carry quite the weight that your impulsive reaction does, but that shouldn't negate their value. Ferry could easily have cashed in on his reputation as the epitome of cool, the marketing possibilities are enormous and obvious. Or just as easily produced commercial sounding dross. I wasn't at the Meltdown festival, but I do have an audio copy of those songs and they are among my favorite things Ferry has ever done. I'm going to contact the tourist information service down there to see what's available. I was originally going to drive back as I only live about an hour and a half away, but I may be too tired to drive back after all the excitement. It came back in around No. 50ish (can't recall exactly) for one week when a UK retailer got it in a Campaign / offer / promotion / sale, early. I followed it's progress in Music Week (music retailers trade mag). Advance sales of "Slave to Love" in the UK have gone silver. There is still no release date for the Paris video/DVD. In Japan the "Slave" cd will have "Toko Joe" added to the running order at the request of Virgin in Japan. It seems that it was a big hit on their international charts a few years back and they talked Bryan into having it added to "Slave". In Canada there will be an edited version of "Crazy Love" issued as a single. No news of the other track/tracks that will be featured on this release. No doubt these will be much sought after by the completest collectors of Ferry/Roxy releases. I may even be tempted to unlock the wallet myself. Loking forward to seeing some of you at this weekends shows. Cheers, Tom. PS. Deb, I really do hope that you don't need the jacket. ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! (I'm travelling by train). The local tourist info. centre is very helpful(Malton) but there is almost nothing available- I got a cancellation. But no doubt it'd be worth a try.See you there.
