Gregory among the judges. His place on the panel is better explained by the fact that he is the author of 'Eye and Brain' (the set text for visual perception at Uni. in my day). Thus, his appreciation of the pieces would appear to be based on an assessment of the amount of information the visual cortex receives as a result of looking at the work. Driving Sue mad as a mongoose. Open air, shaping up as a big deal, only the one place where people were alive in Petworth, hearing the rehearsal with new tracks, kids going, in laws going, national trust not necessarily Ferry fans going, thousands going ........ it was almost as if there was a lot on the line for the Cool Ruler here. I was shivering inside. But no, no nerves from the Maestro. He seems to have a new found confidence in his voice, and well he might do for it's better than I've ever heard it, flat monotone out, tuneful inflection and emotion in. The band and Ferry are so assured - the band are superb but what really hits me is that Bryan carries the tune on songs like Where or When, Out of the Blue, September Song, Casanova, Carrickfergus and The Only Face. Now say what you will but there is no way on God's Earth the prisoner of perfection would have sung this well in the 80's. Listen to Live Aid if you don't believe me - out of tune - he sings better now than at any time - 1972 onwards. What would my fellow European fans have said 12 months ago if we had said As Time Goes By would result in a sold out tour, one of his best selling (RIchard can you help here with relativity to other LP's ? - this MUST have blown Bete Noire away in terms of sales) albums and now a series of open air gigs rolling into the release of a "best of " collection and 2 and a half albums in the can? I'd have killed for this position after Mamouna and the subsequent going through the motions tour. I know the misery "he's finished " and "he knows it" brigade won't buy it but judging by recent events he is , mercifully a long way from done yet. The Petworth event wasn't a swansong. Isn't it ironic that after 56 track recording studios, using Madonna's producer, Nile Rodgers, even Eno that the Maestro gets closest with real time, live performances from a relatively obscure set of muscicians who really like what they do? What price As Time Goes By as the follow up to Boys and Girls instead of the introspection? I hope the next studio album surprises us, that's what he does best. You see Bete Noire, Taxi, and Mamouna were very beautiful in places but they were predictable, nothing new, the Same Old Scene, nothing lasts forever, a feeling only - or a state of mind?. The profile is raised, the record company are it would appear now behind him (I'd tell them to FO and find another deal if I was the Lounge Lizard) and a full scale assault on the charts is on the cards. I hope he has single to promote his new work with. It's still the same old story - all love and glory - he needs a single to consolidate all the legwork. Out of sight out of minds eye know. So coming out of Petworth you come to realise that Joe Public knows - as some of us long suspected - exactly who Bryan Ferry is and what he stands for. Class and integrity through 3 decades. I sense Bryan is on the comeback trail - never quite gone but definitely back . I know were all fans on here but I think we could do worse than just reflect on how far he's come in the last 12 months !
