Leaving with eleven Dutch, some of them haven't seen each other ever before. Too much to tell so I skip the travelling part, the passport control problems (Anton forget it, but he had filmed it at home and they accepted that as well...he films EVERYTHING. Each day ends with again 36 hour video tape,. He can be easily recognised by his dirty hands....even under the shower he is filming) Petworth. For the Dutch it was amazing to see all those English with loads of foods, chairs, tables. What an atmosphere! We had our champagne, the Tiger Nuts from Ivor and a chat with two 70 years old ladies who said that they where the neighbours of Bryan! The concert was really excellent. can't compare it to the other ones I saw but definitely one for a party time. The setlist and the fact that everybody was standing before the stage made the difference. Lost my voice somewhere between out of the blue and Slave to love. After the concert I was broken and I've never seen the bar in our Hotel in Haslemere....I missed the catalogues numbers discussion. The next day we had our excursion to Bryan's house and believe me or not it was something special. How low can a man go? Low! Bryan got a stalker! A stalker? 16 stalkers!!! First we went to a hill near the house, climbed with sixteen people on another little hill to see smoke behind some big trees, but it wasn't the smoke that brought the tears in our eyes. Only Chris Turner never climbed the hill he only stared at us with and expression on his face that said enough. After that Ivor and Reecy did the Country Life cover even the Dutch where shocked by that horny look in their eyes. Then we went to another place near Bryan's house. This time we waded through water and mud, walked a mile between sweetcorn to end on a road 200 meters from our cars. Again we've seen only trees and the creek where the water of Bryan's toilets ends. After we've filled our bottles we could stand it any longer. The Dutch went straight to Bryan's house. Before the house there was a guard, we call him Tattoo Tony, who could not confirm or deny that this was Bryan's house but he asked us if we enjoyed the concert. Picture were taken..again not a glimpse of the House, county life green only. Back to the car where we watched the whole morning on Anton's videocamera. Then we went to the Pub and again more Lager, Bryan Ferry imitations etc. etc. After that we split...what a day. One of the Dutch girls couldn't stand that she still had not seen Bryan's house so she went back. To make a long story short she did all that is forbidden by God and Tattoo Tony. She ended in a garden with two house a white one and an orange one,. The orange one had roses round the door and potatoes by the score. She took her pictures and left as soon as she can. In the village she asked some people...."What's the colour of the house of Bryan Ferry" "What can we win?, they asked" but finally someone told it's orange. "In fact Bryan is a big fan of the Dutch footballteam." That evening we had again a big party in one of the local pubs. We've talked with an English guy of our own age who told us that in '77 he worked six weeks to spent all the money on an Anthony Price suit, bought on Kings Road for 300 pounds! He still had the trouser and the way he described it sounded like it was cut to get that special pinkmonkey-arse effect which was very cool in those days. Was it monkeyboy? He did knew the Roxy Music classic albums so we sang She Sells together. During the dinner we organised our own BF, RM quiz with question like"name every song of each album in the right order starting with Re Make Re Model. Who played bass on Sultanesque. In what year Bryan went for a holiday to Kreta. Which finger broke Paul and what motorcycle was he driving? The Jury was on my hand so I won... I will stop here with boring you all ..and I end with saying...It was good to see you all (again), Martin, Jocelyn, Richard, Ivor, Reecy, Glen, John, Kevin, Chris etc. etc. Hope to see you all again (and the people that I've missed) in the near future Claim to fame...Lucy recognised me again in the audience. Cheers Han And for Ivor... n.p. The omens were not good. Nine to Five, the daily grind. The perpetual threat of Rain, Rain, Rain. But Petworth House, West Sussex, that's where MY Studebakker took me... There was a strange mixture of young and old, grandparents and kids at the venue, would it work? Would genteel Middle England take to those wacky rock and rollers...? I needn't have worried. This has to be the best Avalonian gathering so far. A fantastic turnout from the four corners of the world. What a pleasure to welcome Glen Lehman from Australia, eleven splendidly crazy folks from Holland, JO'B from the North Pole, and many, many others. Martineaux resplendent in er, brown, Jocelyne and her friends getting gradually more and more enthusiastic (for that, read loaded!) handing out miniatures of vodka throughout the gig. Great to meet Diane from Scotland, Andrew Shearer and all the usual suspects (except Simon Galloway...where were you man?) The Avalonians were a substantial presence at the front, and got a lot of feedback from a band that were there to enjoy themselves, larking about on the stage. Lucy Wilkins the instigator, fooling around whilst her rock-chick metamorphosis continues before our eyes. Enrico was the all-purpose guy, popping up all over the stage, as singer and musician and all-round good egg, Julia putting everyone in the shade, in her shades.... Colin Good caught me singing along to Street Life, and threw his head back with laughter when I turned around... And then, as if that wasn't enough, there was that Bryan Ferry guy too. A total return to form after the relative low of the RAH, this was reminiscent of his Paris performance, at once cheeky and knowing, spectacular and supreme. He postured and pouted, preened and posed and frankly held us in his hand like putty, moulding and shaping us before rolling us into a long sausage and...oh, er, sorry, I overdid the metaphor a bit there. A great show with the revisions to the setlist making it an unashamed Greatest Hits package. Casanova and OOTB were incredible, and when Ferry strolled out for the second half, resplendent in the old white tux...wow! 20 years just fell away, just another high... Dance Away was cool, perhaps the first time Ferry has done this solo, and special for me as it was the song that really got me into the band. Slave To Love was also excellent, Ferry pulling the same shapes as at Live Aid, and by the time Virginia Plain thundered into earshot, I was shot...sensational! We boogied and pogoed, the first two rows almost exclusively Avalonian, until an increasingly more exhibitionist Jocelyn, spilling out of her blouse and straddling the crash barrier like a circus artiste, received recognition from the Maestro himself, the ultimate accolade. Even the long delay to leave didn't diminish our excitement and on our return to the hotel we fell into a long, protracted and frankly rather sad conversation about our Roxy lives, prog-rockers, glam-rockers and pub-rockers all united. For me, meeting so many other loonies was as much a pleasure as was the wonderful performance, especially our Dutch contingent, who were marvellously off-the-wall. Andy Mol summed it up best when he went to bed at 3AM with the comment: (adopts Dutch accent) "Crazy, huh? All the way from Holland, to stand in a cold field with no beer, and watch an old guy in leather pants." Beautiful. One day I'll meet a Dutchman who doesn't speak good English...but it hasn't happened yet. You guys really made my weekend fun, thank you. Special mention too to Reecey and Ivor, with whom I made up a trio of naughty but knowledgeable schoolboys. Great fun. The following day is (hopefully) best forgotten about...perhaps it's my British reserve... Next time (next weekend) is the best time...we all know Chris ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! The day started for us at 2, giving ourselves a good 3 hours to find the haven of our Egon Ronay Georgian Inn nestling in the bosom of Sutton near Little Bognor. Well a full throated Siren and half of Stranded later we found ourselves miraculously at our destination and locked out of a deserted hotel. The phone goes. Martino "I've just missed my train to Pulborough. What are you all wearing?" Half an hour later we decide if the worst comes to the worst we'll just get changed in the car park and try not to frighten the horses. Just as we were heading off to explore the local Roman ruin (that believe you me probably looked a damn sight better than we did on Saturday morning) our saviour of a hotelier arrived. The phone goes. Martino "It's alright I'm getting picked up at Pulborough. Have you decided what you're wearing yet?" Much fun and games getting ready and a couple of bottles of champagne later(mistake) we're raring to go. The phone goes. Martino "I haven't got a ticket but I know what I'm wearing" A slippery slide down the Petworth slope and we're a glide away from the early Avalonian birds who have staked their place in the singles bar (doubles when we arrived). Tucking into our assorted feast of delights and we're suddenly aware of a glowing red light stage right. It's Anton filming not so discreetly as we tangled with our picnic. If that ends up on any Dutch dodgy channel inter cut with who knows what Anton, we're suing! Suddenly Martino arrives. What are you wearing??! A vision in brown moleskin and puce open neck. Well, we popped our corks more times than we thought humanly possible and delighted in the company (Andrew - a true gentleman, Martino, John O'B, Emma and kids, Ivor, Chris, Reecey, Han, Anton, Mr Fedder and a number of very welcome new faces). Then a sly limbo down under the roped off section and we found ourselves squashed cheese grater like against the barrier at the front/left. Who's this next to me? Terry Lane. But Terry I thought you were a girl I babbled stupidly. Evidently and obviously not. Poor man having to put up with being next to a middle aged woman transported back to the heady days of the '70's by a moonlit night and the soundtrack of her formative years. A shoal of Ferry minnows (Tara and friends) darted nervously back and forth in front of us. Isn't it past your bedtimes? Then, here we were again. It's great to be in Petworth!!! Well it is actually. You all know the surprise editions (but not of You unfortunately) Virginia Plain was sublime. The tux change. Look what he's wearing!!! Our highlight? A massed choreographed Avalonian flavoured Absolut shot during the string climax of Out of The Blue and my good humoured acknowledgment by Mr Ferry. Colin Good's highlight? A ringing "Colin! Colin! You're good!!!" Well maybe not, but you had to be there. All over too soon. A quick hello to Richard Swift on the way out, and a swift exit with our hero Mr Shearer to try and catch last orders at a fabulous out of the way olde English boozer - which we missed. So the only thing left to do was a scenic trip back via Little Bognor to wave at Tattoo Tony and count the roses around the door of the beautiful gate house that was once Mrs and Mr Ferry Senior's residence. Back for a slumber party, where we quaffed red wine and ate strawberries and cream in our pyjamas. How on earth did they get there? Looking forward to doing it all over again next Saturday, sorry I missed you Steve but look forward to seeing all you guys at Elton Hall. Here's a quick info update from Saturday. I had a quick chat with Jim Lawn who told me that Slave To Love will receive TV promotion in the UK. I wont quote the figure he told me but the release has a significant promotional budget, as the record company are "keen to re-establish Ferry as a major artist". As we suspected, STL is a contractually obligated album. I asked about the Early Years compilation and Jim said that this is a TV series tie-in and that Ferry had had "money thrown at him" to be involved. Finally Jim confirmed that there is 2 to 2 and a half albums of material in the archive and that Ferry will enter the studio soon to record another album. I think he said with the existing band, but I could be mistaken. I certainly heard that from someone. At one stage Jim was standing right next to his nemesis Martineaux, both oblivious as to who each other was. Oh the irony! How low can a man go? Low! Bryan got a stalker! A > stalker? 16 stalkers!!! Hey, Bryan's house is just not that difficult to see. Back in 1986, My ex-husband and I took a little trip to Jolly ol' England, and of course, one of the main attractions I wanted to visit was Bryan's residence. The only clues I had was that he lived in the 'shadows of Petworth House' in Sussex (can't remember which, East or West). So, about 2 days prior to our departure from Heathrow, we visited Petworth. I thought we'd tour Petworth house, then drive around the countryside, looking for suspicious Edwardian Homes. Much to my chagrin, it was a Friday, and Petworth House doesn't do tours on Fridays. There was, however, a Ladies' Aid Society Sale of some sort going on in town. I remember buying a jar of Lemon Curd. We sat down and one of the tables there and had some gateau (cake) and tea. Over teeters this little old woman who kindly asked if she could sit with us. We gladly accepted her company. I was too shy to ask, but my ex blurted it right out, "Hey! You know where Bryan Ferry lives around here." She nodded her head, and said, "Yes, he lives over in Fiddleworth." Then she went on to volunteer more information. She said that her daughter used to work in the Fiddleworth post office, and that we could probably go over there (she gave us directions), and they'd give us directions. Then she went on to tell us a story about how his dog went missing once and he'd put up posters asking folks to look out for his dog. So, off we went to the Fiddleworth post office. Again, I was too shy to go in there and make a fool of myself, but fool was my ex's middle name. So he went on in, and asked of the whereabouts of Bryan's place. The man in the post office was kind enough to draw him a map, and told him that Bryan often would take a walk on Sunday mornings to fetch a paper from the post office store, and that if we hung around, we might be able to catch him, if he was in town. We'll, we couldn't stay until Sunday. Sunday was the day we were flying back to Washington DC, so instead, we followed his map to Bryan's place. It was on a quiet paved street with several moderate sized brick homes. Bryan's home was unmistakable as it was the one with the big iron gate in front with the sign on it that said "Private," and it couldn't be seen from the street. Surprisingly enough, Bryan must not have been expecting stalkers that day since the gate was gaping wide open. My ex wanted to rush up to the front door, and give it a knock, but I basically told him I would go back to Washington without him if he did. There was a dirt or gravel road that flanked the right side of his property that went back to an orchard we were told. Right next to the dirt road, there was a house - a moderate brick home with these two old people sitting out back. We struck up a conversation with them. They confirmed that Bryan was their neighbor, and they described him as a hateful bastard. They said his wife was rather nice though. From the dirt road, there was a flimsy wire fence and beyond that, a big overgrown field, and from the fence, you could actually view the back part of Mr. Ferry's home. It actually looked familiar. I recall seeing some pictures in Jerry Hall's book that look as though they were taken from the back of the house. Well, I must admit, I did step foot (just barely) on his property, and did manage to get a couple photos with my zoom lens but I didn't see any sign of life moving around. We could hear what sounded like tractors moving around on his property, and thought there must be some people doing some garden work on the grounds. Later, as we were leaving Fiddleworth, there was a tall lanky old man sitting outside of the brick wall of Bryan's property, near the road, on the corner. We talked to him briefly, and he warned us that we'd best not venture on to Bryan's property, cuz Bryan was rather 'funny' about people invading his privacy. About the time all this took place, Bryan's father had recently passed away, and I'd heard that Bryan had hired his uncle to come look after his place. I always wondered if the man we talked to were Bry's uncle. Oh well, I suppose I'll never know. But this was my great stalking adventure. - --gina ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Boo-hoo willows weep around me still. A summer enchantment by an old mill stream. Impressions * Rosie's new haircut : Whilst I take this as a sure sign that her "People Carrier" tryst with the Cool Ruler is over, I remain loyal to her nonetheless. She wore her music class mistress look throughout, shaking her cornfield locks in weary admonition of Lucy's naughty japes. As I remarked to Chris, she is indeed "something for the older man" in that foxy quintet. * Jocelyn's friend Kate told me that they all "did" Andrew Shearer in their hotel room that afternoon. What can she mean ? * The white tux : Sublime moment. (It looks so naff when I see men donning that look at weddings. How can he make it look so ...cool) * "The Legendary John Southern" continues to sound like a four year old having a tantrum with his lego set. The "drumming" on Slave to Love plumbed new depths. * Ivor and Reecey's base-camp fifty yards from stage. Hilarious. Two old boys taking the air at Blackpool sands. * Bryan looking up at the sky as he introduced Carrickfergus, the scudding salmon storm-clouds remindng him of Ireland. * The Acknowledgement of Jocelyn : Lest anyone has any doubts the Maestro clearly recognised our Geordie's billowing cleavage (as she rested it / them on the stage scaffolding) and for approximately 23 seconds grinningly held her gaze. * ....err more of this when I retrieve my notes from the inside pocket of THAT suit.. pip pip Martineaux ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" !
